To which I replied, in summary: So considering all that, why do you think others should consider your opnion?
First, the insult thing was referring to NetSplit repeatedly calling people morons. True, it's not much of an insult...

Now, more relevant to the quoted bit... let's make a comparison. Gay marriage has been a popular debate topic in many places. Many of the people debating it are not gay. So why should we listen to their opinions?

Because a direct personal involvement in the topic in question is not a prerequisite for forming a reasoned opinion.

Is there a version of "Godwin's law" for Gay Marriage? As in once someone goes completely offtopic and mentions Gay Marriage, the thread is over and you lose?

Edit: You know what, nevermind. This thread's not worth the frustration of dealing with some of the more unreasonable people like NetSplit, especially on a day that I have to work to help support my parents. Fuck this shit.

NetSplit, I understand people spend tons of money on these and may hope to get it back one day by reselling it. But isn't that then being selfish? True, no one is entitled to it, but hoarding it is only keeping a part of gaming history from being documented and discovered, and for what? S some collector can make a quick buck by selling it back? If they need to sell it back for the money that badly, they shouldn't have spent it on the damn thing in the first place. Typically, I don't buy something with the intention of selling it back at a later price. That's pretty foolish. If I buy something, I usualy plan on keeping it and don't get butthurt if the value goes down as a result of it. And if I payed a metric fuckton of money for a proto, I wouldn't give half a shit. Because I would release the ROM of it. And I wouldn't get all OHNOE, NOW I CANT SELL IT BACK THUS DEFEATING THE PURPOSE OF ME EVER OWNING IT IN THE FIRST PLAEC

Really, I can understand your points but when it all comes down to it, there's really just a lot of selfishness going on and even more egotripping in the vast VAST majority of collectors. No one is entitled to the game, but in this particular context/situation, it's like saying dying children with cancer aren't entitled to a cure. It'd still be nice to help them out.

I have the rom, and I feel it's nice to finally have it. By no means did I ever think I *deserved* it, seeing as how I've done nothing to do so. When BMF first said he had the rom, I was excited, and I asked him if I could get a copy, and of course he said no. After a few "come on! "'s, I eventually just gave up and respected BMF's promise to not give it out, and that was the end from it for me.

Yes, I have the rom now. The methods used to get the rom available were questionable, but since it wasn't me who did it, I don't feel guilty about having the rom. I do feel bad for the collector who's trust was violated, and I feel bad for BMF, who probably only obtained the rom after hard work, but he's not the one who leaked it, I'm not the one who leaked it, so I don't feel guilty.

So in short, I feel bad for certain parties involved, but I don't feel bad for just simply having the rom in my possession.

I don't like hoarding, but I respect people's decisions to do so. Ask BMF, I asked for the rom a few times, and then I never said a word on the subject again.

And since when did 30+ people in IRC have the rom? Maybe after it got leaked, but certainly not beforehand.

All this arguing is pointless, it's turning into flame wars, everyone's trying to impose guilt-trips on everyone. The leaking and releasing was the wrong thing to do, feel guilty about it or not, no matter what, it was wrong. We have the rom now, woo-hoo, be happy.

Also, Sonic X-Treme doesn't have any actual prototype. All of it is just tech demos everyone would get bored with after minutes. If anything, be greatful that protos of it haven't been leaked, because now you still can be interested about it.

So can we drop this now?

We have gone far off topic. The ROM has already been leaked, and tearing other people down definitely doesn't solve any problem. Can someone please close this thread?

Yeah, seriously.

Because debating in the internet won't change anything.

You're screwed up here.

Besides, there are more inpotant "features" to implement than topic splitting.

Tweaker, maybe many people who had the ROM shouldn't have had the ROM, but that is no excuse for YOU to be the one who gave it to everyone.

Wait, I need an excuse to release prototypes now?

As it is, this is theft of backup copies of a game he owns

This is a community dedicated to the editing of illegal backup copies of commercial products. We steal games every time we download a game. So if what I've done is considered theft, I'm not all too bothered. =P

Tweaker, you're an asshole.

Thanks, tell us something we don't already know.

OH FUCK MEGAMAN SYNDROME

On a more on-topic note, has anyone poked around the prototype ROM's innards? I tried to have a look in YY-CHR but things seemed all odd and compressed. Maybe I've just lost any idea of how to do things, but wasn't SMB2 uncompressed? Odd.

Maybe they uncompressed the graphics from DDP and forgot to recompress them for SMB2.

I think the game still uses CHR RAM for graphics, like what DDP does, since it runs on the FDS.

In that case, the graphics could literally be anywhere, in any format.

Yeah, the game uses VRAM + SRAM (8KB extra RAM on the cart). I believe a lot of FDS conversions used the MMC1 + VRAM + SRAM combo, since it so closely matched the original FDS hardware. The final game was expanded to 256KB + MMC3 + VROM just so Nintendo could add the new ending sequence and animate more tiles (the original waterfall/quicksand/conveyor belt animations were handled by the CPU, which is very time-consuming). Of course, the new additions didn't take up nearly 128KB, and as a result the final ROM is rather sparsely populated.
