I should take some more interesting screenshots, and start mapping out the ROM |

The only thing really intersting about this any more is the level select code, and that's just because it leads to really awkward glitches.
The ending's different too, but beyond htat there's not much different than what you see at the surface. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

I just wish there was some kind of indicator when you use the world select thing. xD
It get's old to count the number of times you pressed A... ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I might be more excited about this, if it weren't for the fact that the owner of said proto entrusted the ROM to someone on the grounds that it would NOT be released without his permission (which was only a matter of time, really). Being an impatient bastard and throwing the ROM out there without his knowledge OR permission was a really, really low thing to do, and may have burned some bridges that can never be repaired.
(before any of you start flaming me and calling me a hoarder, please note that I have a rather...unique perspective on this situation) ____________________ [citation needed] |

Question is, what if this prototype was actually dumped from another source?
Just random thought. There's sometimes more than one copy of a prototype, and sometimes different versions that people manage to get. :/ ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Doesn't it seem like the enemies in World A-1 move faster? As if they were planning to create a 'hard mode' of sorts. ____________________ |

They do move a bit faster. And things seem to fly faster, and in a much more downward direction when you throw them, I was thinking the same thing. That, and the plants are thinner and no longer smiling at you, they look like they want to kill you. ____________________ There are things I want to put here. Every enemy looks like it's repeated a few times too, and almost every sprite and timer is faster (sub spaces or star for example last less)

After looking at this and my game crefully, it seems that the SMB2 proto I have is fake.
It's exatly the same as this, but the insides look like a regular NES cart, not a proto. |

Pretty much everything in A-# is broken (and I swear I said this already).
Sprite code is run twice. There are a few other areas where, instead, the player's code is run twice instead, but for the most part, well, it just makes the game difficult ____________________ I dealt with it. |

Posted by BMF54123 I understand what you're saying, and I do feel bad for the original cart owner since his trust was broken, and I'm glad that it wasn't me that did this. However, this isn't going to keep me from enjoying the prototype. I was wondering what his reaction was going to be to this, because I know he's going to be a bit upset, and depending on how he reacts, I might think twice about making the rom re-available if it gets taken down. However, I do get a little frusterated when people reveal that they have prototypes that they won't be sharing. For example, Marble Madness II: Marble Man, and the z3 prototype (if it's real, that is). I mean, they'd prevent a lot of future headaches to many people if they just kept quiet about their prototypes, unless they decided to share them. ____________________ |

it's not like they can legally claim dumped images of copyrighted games as if it were their own intellectual property, anyway. I'd like to see him try just for the dramatic entertainment value of 'ego wars'. |

What most people fail to understand is that it sometimes taks a LOT of trust and a LOT of coaxing to get prototype owners to part with even one copy of their game (or to even dump it in the first place). After that, it takes even more time and more coaxing to get their permission to release the ROM publically, if they ever allow it at all. Done properly, this (sometimes very long) process maintains the often fragile trust and integrity of the relationship between collector and preservationist, since there is mutual agreement and understanding on both sides.
Events like this only serve to shatter that trust, and paint trustworthy preservationists in a very bad light. This can potentially cause prototype owners who were "on the fence" to refuse to release their games at all, and as a result even more, possibly completely unreleased (and thus even more historically significant) games may never see the light of day. In short: enjoy your ROM now, because you might not see another one like it for a very long time. ____________________ [citation needed] |

So what, do you want me to say I'm sorry or something? There's always two sides to the fence, and you should know that.
Besides that, it should be obvious that the fault isn't just on me for leaking this. If this dump was supposed to be as private as you thought it was, how did I obtain it? Why is there an IRC channel with 30+ people who have said ROM? If you want to be super-anal about how you deal with collectors and whatnot (which is a viewpoint I can certainly understand), then you need to work harder to keep private ROM dumps, uh... private. Because you "think" you may be able to trust all your friends that you hand them to (or whatever), but remember that a majority of people won't hesitate to turn on others at any time. I kept this ROM private for a few months (ie, I've had it for a while), but what good does that do? Waiting for a collector to give a thumbs up that would probably never happen? And, even if it does, what circumstances would have changed? Either way, the ROM would've been out there, and I doubt he was keeping it just to sell it later or something. Whatever, I'm rambling now... But I don't regret one bit of what I did. I'm not going to claim responsibility for how a group of people act; neither the "sonic fags" or the "collector fags." But I got ahold of an unreleased game, so I did what I thought would be best for the thriving of both this community, and a fair share of others I frequent. If that negatively affected any other communities, I'm not about to bow down and take it in the ass over it. I mean, I'm sorry that turned out bad for you, but that's just the way things happened. What I'd do is, if you find another proto like this, and manage to convince the withholder of the cart to dump it, then, uh... DON'T TELL ANYBODY. It'll save the trouble you'll get from people knowing of its presence, and the chance of it leaking to the wrong person again, essentially repeating this situation. ____________________

So hey what's the orgin of this prototype anyway.
I heard it was found in Sweden for some reason. Which doesn't seem impossible as it might been some preview sent to Bergsala (think Nintendo of Sweden) for some reason. They oughta have a US NES to only check if X game is worth to introduce to the Scandinavian markets. All this talk reminds me about that fake prototype that someone destroyed to tease people... ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Posted by XkeeperNow, getting away from the "HOARDING BASTARDS/LEAKING BASTARDS" debate, this is most interesting to me. Maybe it could be possible to add a toggle to the original game, that could be toggled on the title, to enable double-ran sprite code for a Hard Mode? It would certainly add a bit more life to some hacks. Or am I retarded and this would break horrifically? |

Posted by Bloodstar I'm not overly excited since its just a prototype of a "special" translation; had it been a proto of DDP however... ____________________ |

Posted by The KinsIt'd probably break a lot of things, as all sprite code is run twice and a lot of in-game timers are cut short (the rugs, for example, don't last quite as long as usual). Some other bad things are present too, like the game lagging really badly at 2-4 objects. ____________________ I dealt with it. |
