Have you ever been in the middle of writing something and come up with a good sentence out of the blue? You know, you like the rest of that piece, but that one line stands out. I figured we could start a thread and post them. (Of course, "perfect" is subjective. Mine probably isn't too special, but I like it.)
Here's mine: "Spiders were taking up residence behind stray flaps of wallpaper." On a semi-related note, my fiction teacher mentioned the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest a while back. I guess you're supposed to come up with the longest, stupidest-sounding sentence you can. Here was the one I came up with: "Patrick said goodbye to his girlfriend Betty, whose parents positively hated him and did not approve of the two of them dating, and quietly shut the sliding door leading to her family's back porch, all the while looking around carefully to possible witnesses, and seeing none, he began to sneak quietly away - quietly, that is, until he tripped over their trashcan, for it was nearly midnight and it was impossible to see anything." ____________________ What sig? I don't have a sig. |

Mine usually comes in trying to destroy redundancy. If I tend to get really excited or want to focus on a particular subject of something...anything...and this is outside writing and more into actual posts and whatever that I make...I do it.
I'm doing it now. So I tend to find things that can break the cycle, even if it's just a change of wordplay just to fit. As much as choosing what -sounds- good, I've had that happen numerous times in an attempt to convey something as best I could. Most of the time, writing it informally and naturally tends to be a lot better than using big words to drive something home accurately. |
