Just be ready to clean off all the preloaded garbage and you'll be fine.
I find it easier to just immediately reformat the disk and reinstall Windows with a clean start.

HP laptop, about... 4 years old. It's not the most impressive in its numbers, but it does the job for me and I love it <3

Mine is custom built.

Mothernoard: ABIT AN8 socket 939
RAM: 2 GiB
CPU: AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+
Video: nVidia 6800 128MiB PCIe 16X
HDD: 200 GB Maxtor hard disk
OS: Debian sarge AMD64

I used the cheap power supply that came with the cheap case, but it is still very reliable. The last reboot was 129 days ago.

Mine's a Dell laptop. It's unbelievable how much crap they throw on there, including a 20GB unusable partition for use by the trial version of Norton Ghost.

Gparted + Windows XP CD work wonders for cleaning all that stuff out.

iBook G4, bought last year right before the new MacBooks came out.

My other computer was bought through iBuyPower.com and it has an Abit mother board, 3.4gHz P4, 256 video card, 128 sound card and was running fine till I failed at installing a new network card (due to a busted onboard LAN connection). Should be able to fix it up when I get paid over the summer. All in all, a great purchase.

Just be careful. My Dell laptop has been nothing but problem after problem. I had to replace the motherboard initialy, then the power supply, now it looks like the harddrive might be giving out too (I swear, I've had to reinstall windows at least 5 times and every time, something ends up breaking beyond all repair after I've used the computer once)

Since I know a lot of you are big on computer specs here; would anyone be so kind and generous as to tell me what brand I should be buying if I want to run a Windows OS (ie No Macs) and still want my laptop to be somewhat affordable?

My Dell desktop has given me some troubles over the years but nothing MAJOR. The main fan died on me once but that's about it.
Granted, it was somewhat reliable at first and even an okay computer. But no more than a year after was when the motherboard just up and died. Burnt out. No real explanation why, either. And it graciously was NOT covered, casuing me to have to replace it myself. But for good laptops, I've heard many great things about Toshiba brands. Reliable and from what I've heard, affordable.

Next to me is an Emachines T1090 that is (amazingly) still useable.
In various locations are ancient machines from the time before Windows 2000, most notably the one on the floor that has a great (old) MIDI-synth sound card.
And, I'm typing this on a Compaq Presario that I improved upon.

CPU: AMD Athlon 900Mhz (original)
RAM: 320 MB
HD: 90gb total (40, 30, and 20gb)
Optical: DVD-ROM + CD-RW
Video: 3 outdated adaptes (1 in use)
#1 - Creative Labs Graphics Blaster Exxtreme
#2 - Matrox Graphics Millenium PCI
#3 - nVidia Vanta or Vanta LT (original)

I think the video card I'm using (the Creative) is dying. (Barely visible fluctuation in brightness, I noticed it when I toggled animation in Lunar Magic.) TThe Matrox, on the other hand, glitches graphics; mainly dotted lines. The nVidia messes up colors when I try tto play DVDs in VLC.

And I need a new keyboard. This one types double t's sometimes. (See the above section.)

I won't mention my box of computer parts...

There's usually a lot of propitary drivers you need right away, so I've shied away from doing this.

Gateway.

My previous computer was a Dell, but it died after 5 years (a power flicker did *something* to make XP have an "Unmountable_boot_volume" bsod at boot-up, so I went into the recovery console and tried 'fixboot', and it completely hosed my boot sector, making my HD unusable, unless I use some disk commander or something)

Before that, I had a laptop (compaq presario something), but it wore out after a year.

Before that, I had a Monorail.

Before that, some kind of crappy generic IBM that my dad gave to me because he got a new computer.

Before that (we're at 1995 now), a Macintosh Performa 550 (which still works, and I still have)

Before that, a Commodore 128 (My brother's. He got a new dos/win3.1 computer)

Before that, an Apple IIgs (which later got replaced by the C128 above)

I think that's everything...

Computers have brands?

*ahem*

I've never, ever owned a branded system; the first ones my family owned were built by my uncle, and all subsequent ones were built by me. It's the only way to fly!

My current setup (just upgraded this week):

- ASUS M2N-E motherboard
- Athlon 64 X2 4200+
- 1GB DDR2-800 dual-channel RAM
- eVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB PCI-E
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2
- ATI TV Wonder Pro
- LG LightScribe DVD-RW drive
- 200GB Seagate PATA hard drive (with SATA adapter)

It's like butter, only sexier.

My AquaMark3 scores, for those interested:

GFX 13419
CPU 9821
TOTAL 79723

It's custom, soon to be upgraded.

Motherboard- Foxconn 761GXK8MB-RS
Processor- Athlon 64 3400+
Memory- 1GB DDR-400
Audio- Realtek integrated 5.1
Video- eVGA GeForce 7600GTS (not listed on manufacturer's site)
HD- 160GB and 200GB, both Western Digital
Optical- DVD-ROM and DVD-RW

The only name brand model I owned was an NEC I'd bought in 2000.

Desktop:

Apple iMac 20"

2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB, 1GB RAM, 20" monitor, Superdrive, Miglia TV mini, dual booted with Windows XP.

Laptop:

Sony Vaio 15"
1.5 Pentium M, 512 RAM, nVidia GeForce GO 6200.

The next computer I get will probably be an Apple laptop to match my desktop. I particularly love the clean, regular lines of the laptops, they make it very easy to slip them into bags and carry around. What's also nice is the ease in which you can put them to sleep and then resume them later. The battery life is also top notch.

I'm holding out for a replacement for the Powerbook 12", thanks to its great battery life, low price and small package.

I've got a Dell laptop. 1GB RAM, 120GB harddrive, 1280x800 widescreen, and Windows XP Media Centre, and I've had it since March '06

I've had a few problems with it in the past, such as the power cable breaking, twice, the USB ports failing, the screen panel becoming loose, and the plastic at the front of the screen snapping off due to pressure, but I had those two repaired last week.

I used to have a custom built that i made. it lasted about 7 years. a few years back i got my Dell that i regret getting, in the beginning bad parts were i needed more RAM, a CD Burner (that i recently just bought). I still haven't got a RAM stick yet

But let me just say...... it's adequate, it could be better. right now my processor is an Intel Pentium 4

A dell. My mother's too scared of electricity to not freak out about the thought of me putting together a computer myself... I've since added 256 MB of RAM (bringing me to 512) that I got out of my grandmother's old computer, and a DVD drive.

If I get a full-time job soon, I'm gonna save up for a better one. Unfortunately, thanks to certain overbearing relatives, I'll be stuck buying a premade computer... ah well.

Every computer I had seems to be a HP pavilion. XD Don't they have other brands?

Anyway.

AMD Athelon 64 X2 Dual 5200+ 2.61 GHz
2,00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7990 GTX

Two screens in a multi-monitor setup.
HP 1955 LCD screen at 1280x1024
HP 91 CRT screen at 1280x1024

My next PC is probably a custom one. We went with a brand as we found it was cheaper... since you don't get to pay tax for it. :p Or rather, you didn't need to through the deal we had.
