I know I've posted an album thread before here, but it'd be a bit silly to bump it considering how long ago it was.

I've finished a new album - some tracks are similar to the ones on the previous one, but the majority are brand new, composed recently. The mixing isnt brilliant, but it's alright. Opinions would be great, any constructive criticism/what works/what doesnt/what I should work more on, etc.

edit -

Uploading a single, more concise album. And yeah, I understand the thread title is very misleading now. If anyone could take out the bracketed part, then that'd be great. But ah well.

Here we go:

Second Case First Starting Past - 2007

Tracklisting:

1. Empty Street (Two People)
2. Forest of Ice (Field of Water)
3. Rain (The Flood)
4. Plastic Sky (Second Wave)
5. Mist (Recovery)
6. Walk (Run)
7. H-23b (Look to the Sky)
8. Still (Waiting)
9. Mindset (Attack)
10. Amplitude (Soft)

Running Time: 32:51

Download:

Basically, each track (apart from the final one, which was written in 2004) were written over the past few months. The melodies are fairly simple throughout the album, but I think it works. Track 8 includes a live marimba played by me (not sampled and played with a keyboard like the rest of the album). Which was utter hell to get in time with the rest of the track because of the tempo changes, and the fact that I've never actually played a marimba before. A lot of the other instruments on the album are recorded myself at my college, and then I just sample the sound to be used on a keyboard.

Anyway yeah. It'd be great if people could have a listen and give opinions overall. Like what are the strong points, weak points, what works, what doesnt, etc. Just basic reviews/opinions would be very helpful.

Would you mind telling us what genre this is or what artists this sounds like before I download it?

Uhh.

Electronica mixed with orchestral elements mixed with hip hop beats mixed with random.

I actually seriously dont have a clue. I've never stuck to any genre or style. My stuff isnt amazing, but ah well.

I would add to his list of genres this could fit into "minimalist experimentalist ambient trance" but I'm still listening to the first song.

This is beast. Do you mind if I distribute this haphazardly to my music-appreciating friends?

Cause, you know, I'm gonna do it with or without permission.

I'm just nice.

Uhh yeah sure. I'm in the process of registering it all anyway. So as long as the tags stay the same, I'm fine.

However, before sending it to anyone, or sharing at all, can you possibly add http://www.myspace.com/richorchard into the MP3 tags? Thanks.

I would consider this Ambient/Glitch/IDM. It's very Aphex Twin sounding. I think that The Rain is the best song. Just sounds like the most effort was put into it. I would make suggestions for each track, but that would take too long, so I'm just gonna make one generalized suggestion: get better samples. For some of the songs, your drums samples were very odd sounding and didn't really belong. What program(s) are you using to make this?

Yeah, I record the drum samples myself most of the time with a £15 mic, so they are pretty crappy.

And I'm using FL Studio. I've tried using more 'sophisticated' software, but none have let me have the amount of control that FL Studio does - I can load any sample I want, arrange anything any way I want and do basically anything I want to with absolute ease. Programs like Cubase and Propellerhead Reason just overcomplicate things IMO, when all I want to do is load some samples and write music.

Reason is not as complicated as it seems, and I personally think Cubase is much more effective. I've been producing myself for a whlie now, but I use Ableton Live. The sampler in that is much simpler than it is in FL as I see it. Learning how to EQ and add proper effects can be hard though. Do you use any sort of VST Plugins?

To be honest, while I do have quite a lot of VST effect plugins, I only really stick to a select few throughout all of my work. I guess I should experiment a bit more, but I'd rather not get too concerned with effects and technical stuff when I should really be trying to get a good piece of music done.

What I would like to aim for with my music is to use it as a set of demos of sorts, and eventually get it recorded with live instruments with help from a few mates (working with other people will be good to expand on and improve the music too).
