Goodbye, sweet Macintosh.

My iBook is dead. Hardware failure after three years of abuse. Powers up, but picture quickly degrades into a series of horizontal lines and basic colours. Rather upset, it was very sudden. May be a Logic Board issue now I think about it.

Writing this on Derek's Wii.

Don't need help with this one, just having a whinge. At least my Athlon and my Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo) are working, just I can't take those with me to a certain upcoming Business meeting. D'oh!

Three years seems rather short for a laptop, especially if it's of a high quality. I have a rather crappy laptop model. High amount of failures of the said model... and the company who assembled it gone bankrupt joy. At least I got it for "free"...

But yeah, I really would hate if my laptop died. Even if I avoid using it much as possible, it's better than nothing when I can't use my desktop computer...

Yes... but as I said, it took some abuse. Most notably, it was thrown by my ex during a violent fight in 2004.

...oh, such abuse. That's quite durable then.

My laptop would have shattered to bits if it was just dropped on the floor.

It kept on going for a long time after that, but did get some minor damage to the casing around the screen. I don't think that it relates to this problem though. The first sign of trouble I saw actually seemed to indicate problems with the battery. I wonder if there's been a voltage problem and now something fried. I really should have replaced that battery last year when it began misreporting charge.

I'd check with Apple. It could very well be that the logic board is screwed, and considering it was a design flaw along those models, they had a replacement program.

Who knows, you might get a free mac out of it.

No, I don't think it was my particular model? Could you link me to some proof of that?

Next Byte quoted $1,000--$2,000 to repair. They also confirmed my suspicion that it is indeed the Logic Board.

The iBook only cost a little over a grand and a half back in 2004

Probably would be cheaper to buy same model from eBay than repairing it. xD

Or a budget model today, that probably would be more powerful too.

Budget model?

Nah, the iBook G4 800Mhz (12") was the budget model in its day, I've had enough of the Budget model.

I'm getting a bloody MacBook Pro if I can.

My girlfriend had a Performa 575 which was her primary computer for most of the time from 1994-1998, then she got a Windows PC.

Her old Mac is still at her parent's house in Albany, and since I like old computers, I want to buy it from her parents (hopefully they still have it )

The only problem is that it might not boot up anymore (maybe the PRAM battery is dead, it hasn't been started for at least three years...)

O_o. I had a performa 637CD back in the day. As much as I loved macs back then, the lack of upgradability really killed it for me. The only upgrade available was to move it to a Power PC (from 68040LC "low cost edition") and that was at least $100. It would double the mhz and fix a floating point math error on Marathon Evil. I didn't think it was worth it to upgrade. We still have that computer I think...

Not really...I can't really link you. I just had a friend of mine who's iBook of a similar make (I think it was an 800) managed to eat like 5 logic boards which apple replaced for no cost until they decided to replace the whole computer.

Oh, and I have to say, the Macbook Pros are indeed sexy...but the Macbooks themselves are quite nice...

On the other hand I have a 24" iMac now that I spent all my monies on so I'm happy. (Yay for no need to take it anywhere!)

What do you people use these Macintosh's for anyways?

I've never used one so that's why I'm asking. You can't play games on them so what are they good for?
