Trying something new with the graphics. That is simplicity with the environment (no it will not be poorly drawn) with color and no very dark lines or black. This will reduce it becoming busy. As for Mario and the interactive blocks such as the mystery boxes and the baddies, they will feature more detail and dark lines.
I will post a shot of a mock-up when I can. |

Wow, you guys are starting to work on this again. That's cool. (In case you couldn't already tell, I've been lurking here and on the other board for a LONG time.) I don't know what else to say besides that I'm looking forward to this.
Anyway, I am pretty decent at hacking SMW, so I suppose I could help. Though, if you don't need any technical help, I guess I could be a beta tester or something. |

Posted by Sgraff87 It did always seem kind of forced. And nowadays it seems like Daisy's real love is Peach. Posted by Sgraff87 The simplified environments actually sound kind of Game Boy-esque. Should be very fitting. |

Posted by Link2007Posted by icegoom No he is saying Daisy is. She is a bit of a "tomboy" like they say in her description. Though.. I still think Mario is a pimp. And how many times has Luigi been in Peach's dress as a "disguise"? Two by my count. |

Well here is a unfinished mockup as to what kind of graphic style I am planning for this hack.
I did not include the palm trees as well as other plants to be included. Going for a simple style that is easy on the eyes. Also the lack of detail will allow more tiles to be made such as environmental tiles if needed. I know that the palm trees are not easy to make overlapping the pyramids because of palettes. Also I am playing around with the shadows under specific tiles to create more atmosphere/dimension. Needs work though such as under the pipes. [EDIT] Also I hope that in this game we will be able to edit Mario's physics so that he can just as high as he can in SML. In my last hack I had to lower the mystery boxes. |

Looks good so far. Very clean and simple. The shadows in the foreground are a nice touch. The one cast by the block in the middle looks best to me. I think it'd be easier on you to just put the pyramids in the background instead of making them foreground pieces and having to make transition tiles in order to stick land, pipes, or trees in front of them.
It should be pretty easy to edit Mario's jumping height. Link2007 made Luigi jump much higher in his Mario is Missing 2 hack, so the change should be no problem for him. |

icegoom: From what I can see, Sgraff wants the pyramids in the foreground to scroll at a different rate than the background clouds and pyramids, so that's the only way it can work.
Sgraff87: You're probably already aware of this, but I'll say it anyway. The shadows look like they're in a different perspective under that group of blocks on the right side. Are you going to add transition tiles for the pipes that overlap pyramids as well? Other than that, I love the simplicity of it. ____________________ |

icegoom: Yes like Mattrizzle87 said, I want those pyramids to be tiles rather than the background for more of a dimensional value that they are closer than the ones in the far background. If they moved with the background, you would have to admit, that would just look funny.
Mattrizzle87: I am trying to figure out the shadow under the pipes. It is actually a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. Like the shadows under the small blocks look much better than the shadows under the pipes. The group of blocks and their shadow is different from the others because they were just a different test. They have no relation in light source to the other ones. |

Posted by Hapi-San This is true. Maybe I can make the ground under the pipes and bocks different somehow other than a shadow... hmm... |

I think the shadow might work if you made it a bit more subtle. With less contrast, the fact that Mario doesn't cast a shadow might not stand out so much, and it may also help hide the fact that the pipe shadow and the block shadow don't quite match.
Just a thought. ____________________ andrew sylvester dot com | retrogaming @ robot vaudeville |

Question: With exgraphics and whatnot, I can add more tiles than usual right? If so, I can make the palm trees quite decent looking and have separate tiles of the palm tree without anything behind and others with the pyramid behind.
Also, since the level is suppose to be reminiscent to Egypt, there will not be many or any sand dunes. Egypt has sand but it is either flat or stony. Thinking that where the main ground highers into the air, I will make different graphics. EDIT; I also assume tiles cannot overlap? |

One could move the pyramids to Layer 2 and still make the clouds scroll independently.
There are two ways to do that: Number 1: Add a HDMA effect that makes the top of the background scroll slower than the bottom of the background. Pos: Easier than number 2 Con: Clouds can't be lower than the highest pyramid, would mess up if screen scrolls upwards. ---- Number 2: Move the clouds to Layer 3. Pos: Separate layer. One could also move the very distant pyramids to the same layer. Con: Would require making the status bar thinner (to give more room for the clouds), restricts the clouds to 4 colors (although, that doesn't seem to be a problem), would overwrite L3 cave background or L3 cage (not that they would be used in a SML remake), might cause problems with message boxes and the "goal post" level end, would mess up if screen scrolls upwards and is a lot harder to do than number 1. ____________________ |

@Smallhacker: That is all good ideas and all, but putting the pyramids will make them a part of the background in such a way that they do not scroll past mario in the same fashion as the palm trees would right? Also if they are a part of the background, the level will not be remade in the fashion in which I desire. I wish to put the pyramids in the same places as they were put in the original SML game.
Layers and everything is confusing to me. |

Why not put the pyramids on layer 2, but set it's horizontal/vertical scroll to constant? HDMA can be coded to account for vertical scroll, though it is a little harder than just non-vertical HDMA |

Well here is a few blocks/boxes I have been working on.
The [?] box will have the "?" flashing rather than scrolling around. The breakout block on the right wasn't the easiest to make it look like the original SML ones but look like they could break. Well it seemed to work well. |
