I blame Eisenhower and the US highway system.

Public transportation is good, main reason I hadn't gotten a driving license... public transportation is good enough. And it's actually cheaper than using cars, and our system is pretty good. I dare to say that I can get to most places in Sweden from where I live, without even touching a car. And it's cheap too.

Oil-rationing might work better than raising taxes. But how do you decide how much fuel each invidiual needs?

We can't depend on gasoline for much longer. And remember, there's other things we use the oil for than just gasoline. Of course, we can make oil from coal which we have plenty of but... I don't think it's a good idea to keep releasing CO2.

Or just by adding better public transportation. I know one of the main reasons I never take the bus is that the busses here are usually pretty fucking crappy and don't have any schedules available.

In most places, busses don't even run all week (Eagle River, AK, only runs M-F, not Saturday or Sunday) or don't go where you need them to...
Where's the money going to come from to overhaul the public transportation systems of the entire nation?

Quotas aren't the answer, either. You'll just end up with a black market of some sort to compensate for the leftover demand of people who need (or think they need) more than is alloted to them. Not to mention the costs of having to perform oversight over this whole thing would be quite large.

Heh, I forgot about the black market. Reminds me about WWII, where a common gift was to give each other rations as gift here in Sweden. There probably was a black market as well...

Tax-Payers obviously. Of course, you could cut down parts of the budget...

Americans already think they pay too much in taxes (although if you look at European countries with large welfare states such as your own, we pale in comparison in that battle.) It'd take a lot of convincing to get them to agree to something huge like this, though it certainly isn't out of the question. There'll come a time when necessity demands action on the subject, and nobody will complain then.

All of you who have Public Transportation suck. In this rathole of a town I live in we had one cab company. They went under. Sure we have buses but it's only for old people. Now if only someone could make decent public transportation in the United States a majority of the people might actually use it.

Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.
It's almost $4.00 here, and it was still worse in late 2005 ... then just look at Europe, twice as high

But I think a large part of the price depends on the base oil cost (and import), not the gas companies, so they don't have much of a choice if they want to make any profit at all ...

I don't drive so I'm still not too concerned, but it does affect public transportation costs as well

...We'll either pay for it or steal it, and if prices get way out of control, I fear that many more will start to pump and run.

Hence prepay. Locally the Valero stations were averaging 500-1000 dollars loss of gas a week. We had no choice than to change to pay at the pump or inside first. Rarely, if ever, now do I hear of a drive-off.

Before though? Commonplace weekly...and gas in AR isn't close to the highest...it's around the lower average.

In VA, it's about the cheapest gas around, last I heard. Then again, that was about a year ago.

Ever since I came to college, I haven't used my car. I didn't even bring it here with me. I just walk everywhere. Though, it helps that a lot of the major places I need to go (food, groceries (as in drinks that I keep in my fridge), classes, etc) are within a very decent walking distance from each other, and from my dorm (and even the dorm I'll be in next year).

However, lately, a few of my floormates and I have been taking these hikes up to the "University Mall" (basically a shopping center which is JUST outside campus, but it has McDonalds, Dominos, some kind of "grille" place, Giant (as in the grocery store), etc) to eat McDonalds (because on-campus Burger King *SUCKS*, and Damons has much better cheeseburgers, but is more expensive), and go to Giant.

For example, we went there today, and I bought a 6 pack of 20 fl oz bottles of A&W rootbeer (about 3.5 liters), where at the convenience store on campus, to get that amount of soda would cost more. I also got a huge 1.75L bottle of orange juice, where the convenience store never carries any drinks that large.

Erm, anyway, the point of that is even though it's a long walk, we still go there. Good exercise (especially carrying stuff back to the dorms ). Nope, haven't needed my car here yet. I'd only need it to go back home, since I live (theoretically) 20 minutes away, and I don't do that often.

If it counts towards anything, all of the service vehicles here on campus use environmentally friendly fuel. I can't remember if it's hybrid, or if it's corn fuel (or whatever it is), but I know it's definately not the normal stuff.

Screw America. It's way too screwed up to even be worthwhile anyway. The government just makes the rich richer, the culture is just awful (especially the music), Americans can't use public transportation or live in cities...I can't wait to move to Europe forever and never set foot in the USA again.

Mm, yes, I'm sure Europe's just dying to have an obnoxious, egotistical American expatriate move in.

Yeah, the public transportation here is lame. Cabs are expensive, and buses run on a stingy schedule: every half hour between some stupid time like 10 and 4, and every hour from 8-10 and 4-7, and even less on weekends. And they're often late, sometimes they don't even show up. It makes them useless, I can't take the bus to work if it can't get me there on time reliably.

You realize that you will just be trading one set of problems for another, correct?

I want to critique pretty much every point you made but since this an oil thread I'll leave it at that.

I get gas once every two weeks or so, because I get good mileage and don't have to go too far to get from school to home to work, etc. Chances are I won't need gas that day, anyway. And if I do end up gettling low around that time, I'll just fill it up Monday. It doesn't really make a difference when you think about it, but unfortunately I haven't figured out a way of living my current life without my car. That's how it is for most people.

(sigh) Good to see no one's jumping in to say it's a good idea after this thing's been debunked.

Although some of us basically have to drive ourselves... depending on public transportation's kind of out of the question when I have to cover games, and they're way too far to bike, walk, etc. Necessary evil yes? Maybe biodiesel's a good stopgap option.

I'm glad that public transportation is so cheap here. :\

$65/month gets me unlimited bus/subway access. And it's great because it's a 30-second walk to the bus stop, then I go to the subway and take a 3-minute walk to work. Plus I can head downtown/to the local mall fairly easily.

And most of the crazies are gone when I get home anyways.

It's a potentially good idea.

It just isn't a practical one.

Actually, burning the gas is the best way to hit the gas companies. If everyone burns up all the gas, there won't be any left to sell, and so the profits go from high to zero. See what I mean?

If you slow it down, then it'll be able to persist longer than it could otherwise. In the short term, gas use is bad, but in the long term, it'll straighten itself out.
