Depending on some mysterious circumstance, my Lappy suddenly turns off. This has been going on for months now and it seems to get worse. Many games and even some editors cause it. Leaving my computer idle overnight doesn't, but it did once. It even went out while I was using SonEd. Sometimes when I turn it back on, it barely reaches the desktop and goes out again, but that's just once.

Chief suggested it was intensive (cpu/video) stuff that did it, but Paintshop for example does not cause it. Regardless, I ran some tests on two recent victims with Process Explorer and Textpad in the background to write this:
VBA normal speed ~50%

VBA speed up ~90%
VBA + auto-update view ~60%

Kyodai 2D main menu ---
Kyodai 2D game 17% tops
Kyodai 2D game + sound 17% tops
Kyodai 3D game + sound ~30%
+ env.mapping ~60%
+ best mapping went pop in a few seconds
Note: it just goes pop unexpectedly.

I'm thinking power supply here, but you should run a motherboard-test application of some kind to make sure it's not in the motherboard itself.

It might be more GPU-intensive things, or just when a lot of power is consumed. It does sound like a power issue. I had a PSU burn out, and the system would reboot as soon as Windows started up, not being able to power all the additional hardware being turned on. On a laptop, things like fans and hard drive motors are only going to be running when necessary, and motors take a lot of power to start up.

Does it happen only when you have it plugged in or not?

Does it happen after you've been using the computer for a while? I used to have that kind of trouble because my laptop would overheat. The only fan is on the bottom, so the air can't escape when it's on plastic or high carpet.

Alright I have HAD IT! ><

Even with the playing card decks to provide air, it crashes the same way, and just now, while drawing in OpenCanvas with Elin, it happened TWICE in FIVE MINUTES!

Heh, I support my laptop with books on each corner to provide ventilation because it gets really hot if it's just sitting on my desk.

Stupid Dell.

And stupid Medion too!

The weird part is that in the beginning, it was just as hot as now, but worked perfectly.

Get a mac.
The only problem you'll ever have with an iLap is the fact that it's a mac.

Exactly why I'm not getting a mac.

I'd very much prefer a system I can just transplant my HD into. Physically. Possible?
