What do you do when it's over 85F in your room and it's colder outside than it is inside, by over 20 degrees?

Open your window? Doesn't work.

Turn on your newly-bought $11 boxfan? That doesn't work either (it helps, but not by much.)

Or you can build the GHETTOAC UNIT MK. II.

(Version 1 was backwards. Oops.)

Yes, my window opens sideways (it's fully opened in that screenshot) and despite what I'm sure you think, it's actually rather stable. Well, so far.

So far it's done a great job of moving air in (room's down to 79 already) and it just keeps getting better, but it's really, really noisy. ... Oh well, at least it costs a billion times less to run than that damn AC unit

It's seems really bulky to me, but it actually looks like it works. ACs are indeed very expensive, so that looks like a good alternate.

As for the noise .. well, you could always use earmuffs

Even better: Home Depot (because the equivalent ones at Lowe's suck from the ass and broke on me) folding noise-reducing earmuffs. Pop the speakers out of a pair of headphones, stick them in the earmuffs. SPLADOW.

In the meantime, though, you'd probably be better served by getting the picture to show up.

EDIT: Even better, flip it around and you get the Officially Licensed Unofficial Dorm Room Ganj Ventilation System. (Slightly moist towel for the door not included.)

Unfortunately, my room isn't the rest of the house.

Our wiring is crappy and really old, so when it gets hot, the signal quality (yay cable) drops like a fucking rock. I wish there was something I could do about it other than "run a new cable from the line to your house", but that's really all there is (and there's no hope of us ever actually doing it... )

The San Francisco Bay Area is awesome. Well, around the northern Bay Area, that is.

It's like 74F outside, and 69F in here. And I just opened the window.

Hahahaha

That's hilarious! At least you have a way to cool your room down, at least.

I had a box fan I used to put in my window...and I had the same problem as you. Eventually I went out and bought a portable air conditioner for my room....although they are expensive, its worth more then having to suffer being hot all the time.

I used to do stuff like that at my parents' house. Even Michigan gets unbearably hot in July, and the AC in that house is horrendous. Eventually we got another window AC unit for the other side of the house.

Right now, it's 66F here. A bit warmer inside. Hey I actually used forecastfox NJ wins in the temperature department, unless it's summer, but nowhere wins in summer as far as temperature goes. And the Ghetto AC unit is genius. Perfect idea for cooling and saving money, although it looks rather comical. Maybe get something a little sturdier to stand it on.

Yeah, the reason I thought it was funny was that he had to stack stuff up to the window, because he can't put the fan in the window itself, coupled with the thread title.

Other than that, a fan in the window isn't really all that new to me. We have a beach house in NJ that we go to in the summers, and it's old, so there isn't any air conditioning. Nowadays, we have a window AC unit in every bedroom, and the dining room (which doesn't have any walls seperating it from the main living room, so the air goes into there too). But before all of that, we used the simple place-a-box-fan-in-the-window technique. I think two of the units were actual window-fans, designed for such use, but it was mostly just box fans.

You have a messy room.

And there ARE fans that can be hooked to your window so they stay there without having to be supported by a box and a night stand with a clock on it. xD

I myself have one of these. But then again, I still live with my parents, obviously, and they pay for teh A/C.

Do you have a blue camera/lightbulb or is it just hot down there in world 1-2?

I second that.

Maybe his room shines like the stars... which would be explained by the fact that he said it's hot. Maybe Xkeeper secretly lives on Sirius. D:

My walls are green-blue, and although I have a light (lower left of the picture), my fan light is neon blue. Very stylish.

I have no shelves/desk/anything, so everything has to go on the floor or stacked on crap. Sucks, yes.

And I know, but I don't have those (obviously). That, and my window is a little different... besides, this way, I can move it out easily, like during the day when the GhettoAC would actually make my room hotter by about 20 degrees. (By the way, that's actually a computer, not a nightstand. And yes, it's running.)

Oh, an we have AC here too (it's even on)... it's just we have to leave it pretty high, or else Nevada Power will utterly rape us. (Hello, $400+ power bill!)

It's a holographic sticker my mom put there (there's another two on my ceiling and light switch)

*cracks window and lets in nice breeze*

Well, I can honestly say it sucks to be you in terms of where you live. xD

Seriously, when it gets hot here, it doesn't usually get to the point where I need to crank the A/C. And even when it does, it doesn't cost us that much.
