Eh, I think I was a pretty well-behaved newbie. I was in high school when I was "properly" introduced to the Internet (back in 1996-97?), and I was a pretty quiet, mellow, and intelligent (or so I like to think ) kid. Probably the n00biest thing I did was ask a ROM hacking board why my QuackShot cartridge for the Genesis didn't make any sound...I guess I thought they were geniuses or something.
Unfortunately, one old habit I STILL haven't been able to break is my tendency to end sentences with ellipses (ellipsises? ellipsi?)... ... ____________________ [citation needed] |

A properly-constructed screamer will make people turn up the volume on their own, without needing the prerequisite "hay guyz turn up your volume first." Start it off with some ordinary, boring footage of a guy giving a lecture (with the volume cranked down, of course), let it run for a minute, and THEN whip out the screaming monster. Maybe spice it up a little before the payload by adding fart noises over the guy's lecture; make the video seem a little more "legitimate" in order to hold the viewer's attention (you could then advertise it as "hilarious farting lecturer" or something equally inconspicuous). You have to hit them when they absolutely do NOT expect it.
(Of course, having only seen one or two screamers myself, I dunno if this has already been done... ) ____________________ [citation needed] |

Posted by Ailure - Quick IP searches / bans / etc - A nice user deletion feature (that doesn't make the user's posts disappear, or maybe leaves you the choice and deletes them properly) - A nicely formated action log (I made one for my board) - Managing the smilies and Photo Album when there's one... You can't do that with PMA - etc... |

You've got to use a a wide screen resolution on a wide screen monitor.
I used to have a grip of old CRTs that I would switch through because they all sucked. Some wouldn't stretch to the screen properly, some would shake, etc. -- monitors suck. |

A really, really awful variant of BASIC produced by Interplay (now defunct.)
Eventually I discovered Python (2002?), and used that for quite some time until I started using PHP (2006) and a little perl scripting (every now and then. ) ____________________ |

I started out with Javascript, then Perl. I've messed with pretty much every other language out there, but never really done anything with them. ____________________ "I'd like to confuse bok choy with cabbage." |

For some reason, this doesn't properly patch for neither me or my friend. Not even when I friend removed the header with SNEStool. Any ideas? |

Posted by The Kins I'd be more inclined to think it'd be called "hotfix" or something similar... But I guess that'd be beating around the bush. =P But yeah, I'd say either lack of comments, or lack of time to properly fix the aforementioned issues (maybe both!) lead to why they were fixed as sloppily as they were. It's also possible that there might be more formal revisions of SMW, with these bugs properly fixed - did you check SMAS+SMW for changes other than Luigi's sprites? ____________________

I never got into classic Tetris really, although I adore Arika's Tetris The Grandmaster series.
This also might be the fact the randomizer is pure evil sometimes in the original version. If it gives you too much Z and O shaped blocks, it is pretty hard to find a way to stack properly unless you are an expert at higher levels. TGM just features so many improvements in gameplay ... the original challenge in GB Tetris at level 20 was not the speed, but control. Ever tried to place a block on level 20 properly - since the next block immediately spawns after your current piece dropped (and locked instantly) ? These advantages are in TGM, but on the other side the speed level is just insane later; after a certain point there are infinite falling rates, not to mention the Shirase Mode in TGM3, which might require far more than a few coins to master For multiplayer there are better alternatives out there, like Super Tetris 3 and/or the Bombliss version. |

Flurry #&postrank& That's the "Please look up the manual for details." from Zelda 1's intro ...
It's slightly different in this ROM, but like the rest, it's corrupted data I copied it into Zelda 1 (after removing the excess garbage, so it could line up properly) and got this: Nice try, but that's not it ... ____________________ |

I seem to be alone on this, but I actually prefer emulation over the real thing.
For one thing, emulation gives you access to a wider variety of games. I can play Japanese FDS roms without having to import an actual Disk System and somehow get it to work. I can play lots of romhacks, most of which are never made in cartridge format. And it's easier to hunt down roms of whatever game I want to play than it is to scour jilions of fleamarkets and whatnot to find the cartridge. Another thing I love about emulators is savestates. Sure I used them to cheat, but only for really tough games like the Lone Ranger for NES. Mostly I use savestates so I can stop playing and continue right where I left off, without getting tossed back to the last save point or losing my stats (like Kirby's Adventure where your lives are reset to a default amount). Emulation is even better for NES games as very few of them had a battery save at all, requiring you to instead type 30-character passwords where I looked like l which looked like 1, and one wrong character causes you to lose all your progress. Some games like SMB3 had no save mechanism at all despite being quite large, and I often can't play a game in one sitting. Also, I like being able to enter more than 3 Game Genie codes, turn them on and off at will, and enter them using a keyboard rather than a NES controller. I rarely use GG codes but I like to try out weird ones sometimes. In addition, old systems break. My Commodore 64 broke a couple years ago and my NES only barely works. With an emulator, I don't have to blow into the cartridge 30 times, insert it just right, and wait for the planets to properly align to play a Zelda 1 cartridge whose battery doesn't work anyway. Still, I like the way NES games appear on a TV screen... |

Posted by setzPosted by Madman200 I agree with this to an extent.. but sometimes it just isn't practical. You can envision something incredible, but even if you strive for it that doesn't automatically make it realistic a possibility.. It varies a lot from the idea and scope of the project, and in many cases you can achieve some kickass things if you work hard enough.. but not always. Mind you I am a bit pessimistic by nature, so I guess I tend to shoot down things before properly applying myself to them.. but all the same, if the scope of the project is going to be broad and sophisticated, I don't like to kid myself into thinking I can do something all by myself in any feasible amount of time where it would normally take a team of talented people.. (And finding talent can be difficult, and as well, buying talent is expensive.. the best chance you'd have to have access to a fully functional team would be trying to get a job as a game developer probably, and generally it isn't realistic to suspect you'll ever rise in the ranks enough to push forward any actual game ideas.. just work on stuff other people give you.) Again, I'm pessimistic.. But circumstance plays as much of a role as attitude and determination do. Though if more people actually did apply themselves, we might see more ready talent to make these projects more plausible to undertake.. I guess it is sort of a vicious circle of sorts.. Eh.. My forte just happens to be writing though, that's my talent really, I'm not sure I could push myself to learn programming or 3D modeling or what have you anyway.. as they aren't really my thing, and trying to work with them would probably frustrate me more than anything else.. it just wouldn't be practical in my circumstance to try it totally alone, and I don't really know anyone to help, and so on and so forth.. that's why I've pretty much given up on it and applied myself to just writing a book instead. Might as well get what I can out of it.. |
