Posted on 01-23-06 08:04 AM, in Hello, I have finally taken the plunge! Link
First off, a big hello to everyone here at the Acmlm Forum. Please allow me to introduce myself, and forgive me if this post gets a bit lengthy...I do tend to froth at the keyboard quite a bit.

My name is Kirk Bradford Myers. Yes, I did use my real name, as I really don't like hiding behind a moniker...I don't believe it to be too genuine and up front. I live in good ol' Baltimore Maryland with my fiancee Janet (whom I plan on marrying in May of 2007), and my cat Midnight.

I am interested in and undertaking many creative ventures, the most significant of which are my music and my works of literature. I am currently writing and recording music for a progressive instrumental rock project, One With The Computer, under my current label, KBMyers Records, and am also planning on writing and hopefully publishing the first of a four-book series of science-fiction novels, which will be titled "Dawg - Part 1: Genocis". In addition to the above mentioned, my interests include photography, ancient Egyptian lure, cats, sports (particularly football), classic cars, anime, bowling, music concerts of all types, long car trips, and of course spending quality time with the little woman! I am generally open-minded, and am always willing to try new and different things. This outlook on life is what no doubt led my interests toward the area of ROMhacking about four years ago.

I am a big fan of video games and emulation in particular, and I was motivated to try my hand at hacking ROMs after looking at some of the interesting things that others have achieved through doing so. I remember sitting there playing 8-bit NES games back in the day and thinking "Man, this game would have been perfect if only this and this and this were changed!" When I realized that, through the magic of emulation, there was now an outlet for this mode of thinking and that now the games as they were COULD actually be changed... well, I knew I had to be a part of that scene!

My premise behind hacking NES games in particular was not to make "new" or "competely rewritten" versions of the games, so to speak, but rather to vastly improve on the games as they originally were and to turn them into the games that Nintendo should have released to us 20 years ago if they had taken just a bit more care and effort with them. Four years of sitting in the background and practicing and improving on my ROMhacking skills have brought the aforementioned philosophy to light in the form of a new and upcoming Metroid hack I call "Metroid Begins". What is that? Well, much as I like surprises, I'll let the cat peek his head out of the bag a little bit...

"Metroid Begins" will be released on these boards as well as Zophar's Domain on August 6th, 2006, and will be touted as the twentieth-anniversary edition of the game "Metroid". It's premise, much like that of Metroid: Zero Mission, is to re-create the original NES "Metroid" in it's own image and likeness, basing it on the original design and game maps, all while tightening up the level design and gameplay greatly, vastly improving all the graphics, adding new puzzles, and making better use of available weapons and game programming features while adding a few devious little things of my own creation and design in there. After four years of messing around with the Metroid ROM, the game is almost ready for final playtesting. There are still a couple of small things I want to do to it before I post screenshots, but I'll just say this... "Metroid Begins" is going to make "Metroid" just look like a halfway-decent attempt at a first draft! Granted, you will be impressed...

That enough about me for now. See you all out on the boards.
Kudos!

I refused to go out and see Doom for one reason...because I know that Hollywood doesn't exactly have the King Midas touch when it comes to video game franchises. Their track record speaks for itself. Based on the reviews and the word of good reputable friends who did go out to see it and did not wish to see me waste good money, I don't think I will be seeing it anytime soon.

The one exception to all of this was Mortal Kombat...well, almost. I actually thought it was a halfway decent movie that kept to the story and spirit of the original game without blowing it all way out of proportion. In other words, it would have been a pretty decent movie in it's own right even if it was not based on an already popular brand...

That is, until the overly unrealistic and corny scene at the very end. Then it all went to hell in a handbasket and completely invalidated itself. Remember how you felt after you had listened to that Milli Vanilli album and enjoyed the music for months, then found out that those two guys never sung, played, or wrote a single solitary note of it? That's sort of what it was like for me...I heard that seven dollars I spent to see Mortal Kombat laughing at me, safely locked away in the cash register beyond my reach for the rest of eternity. I'm not going to ruin it for those of you who haven't seen it yet. Rent the video and relive the big letdown on your own.

I'm hearing through the grapevine that movie to see, or not see, in 2007 is going to be TransFormers. It appears that the big boys from planet Cybertron are planning to make an appearance on the big screen. I am filled with a sense of anticipation, and at the same time, a sense of dread. I'm sincerely hoping that Hollywood doesn't ruin this one, bacause this is a movie that actually has the potential to NOT suck! Any movie about alien beings at war with each other completely out of their element unleashed on a populace absolutely unprepared for the percussions of which needs to be given the "Batman Begins" treatment to really work properly. I hear that Steven Spielberg of E.T. fame is co-directing, so this movie might actually turn out to be half decent if Hollywood doesn't use it as a promotional engine to help Hasbro sell a new line of toys.

And to tell the truth...I actually did enjoy "The Grudge". That movie creeped the living holy water out of me...

Posted on 01-26-06 04:15 PM, in I have a small question about the forum... Link
I'm a newbie here, so please forgive me if this has been previously addressed in a different post, but I don't recall this topic being brought up. I have a question...

When looking through the FAQ for this forum, I took note that one of the rules is that we should not post in old threads, thus in effect "bumping" them. I have seen several topics in which I wished to leave a comment but didn't know whether I should or not due to this rule being in effect.

So my question is this. Exactly how "old" must a thread be before it is considered "too old" to leave comments in? Is it consumate with the amount of time passed since the post or how far down on the board it is? I just need a general idea. I have enough common sense to know not to comment on something way down on page 26 and all, but when we start getting into the middle of the second page or even the end of the first page I start getting that funny feeling that I should just leave it alone...

Just wondering. Great forum here, by the way.

Someone calling themselves Madhacker wrote a very good tutorial on using and implementing pointers in NES games. It can be found below. You will need WordPad to view the document.

The Madhacker's Guide To NES Pointers

And here's an online follow-up by the same author:

Using Pointers Effectively

Also, one more. This is a pointer format for the game Metroid, but it might be helpful in figuring out what you need to know about how pointers work, as it seems to be written in simplistic detail and the methods used therein can be applied to a lot of different games...

Hope that helps...

Posted on 01-29-06 02:46 PM, in Concept art for my upcoming novel series... Link
This is a little something, a character concept per se, that I came up with some time ago for the science-fiction themed Dawg series of novels I am writing. I drew this freehand with pencil and paper, scanned it, and touched it up and colored it in MS Paint. Click below to view. Forgive me for not being the greatest of artists...

Dawg

This piloted-from-the-inside monstrosity was built by a human-like and technologically savvy race of beings from the destroyed planet Verteria as a means to survive and defend themselves on Earth. Lest you wonder, that is a tomato firing from Dawg's side cannon. It's a looooooong story, but I'll say this. When you are an advanced race of beings only one inch tall by Earth standards and living on what you perceive as a planet full of primitive war-like giants, you are definitely out of your element and have to make some concessions.

This machine quite oddly does not appear in Part 1: Genocis, the first of the four-book series, except as an early prototype in a rather minor role which sets the stage for events that take place in later books. (There is another Verterian character in the series nicknamed "Dawg".) The first book details the protagonists escape from their own planet and their actual journey to Earth, while the latter three books cover their adventures on the big blue marble and the machine they build in their defense.

Anyhow, enjoy the eye candy.

Thanks for the welcome, peoples. Much appreciated.

Koneko, sorry about the liberal use of bolding. See, there I go again! Just trying to emphasize a few important points 'bout myself...

Danielle, I love your background pic! I've been trying to put one in my posts, no luck. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong...

Synthrax, methinks a forty-five chapter novel is a bit much for a first post...wouldn't want to give away all my trade secrets.

Cruel Justice, Matt Daemon??? Coal mines?? Good Lord! Oh, well, such is the way of the hazing. Somebody get me my pickax...

Apofisu, KBM or KBMyers or Kirk, any of these will be fine.

Metroid Begins screenshots coming soon. Just trying to work in those last few bugs...
Kudos!

I was actually taking a gander at the site this past weekend. Love what you've done with the place. When my own hack Metroid Begins is released on August 6th of this year I'll be sure it finds a home over at ROMhacking.net as well as Zophar's Domain and, of course, right here on the boards. Might as well begin the shameless self-promotion campaign now...

Nice deal. Keep up the good work on your site.

Posted on 01-31-06 02:43 PM, in About my upcoming hack, Metroid Begins... Link
Hey, everybody. I originally posted this in response to a question Nightcrawler asked in a different thread...but the post was turning into a beast and getting dangerously off-topic. So I thought I'd just create this one and take the opportunity to tell you all a little about my upcoming Metroid hack. This post is going to be a bit long, so please bear with me...

Metroid Begins, to be released on August 6th 2006, is not going to be a completely new Metroid game but instead is basically going to be a re-make of the original game in the spirit of Metroid: Zero Mission, sort of like a "twentieth anniversary" edition of the original game only much better in every respect. In fact, it's original working title was Metroid Improvement until I could come up with something a little less sterile. Guess I can give thanks to the new Batman movie for inspiring the name change. My goal was to take Nintendo's little magnum opus and perfect it, giving it the fine-tuning it so desperately needed and giving it more license to make sense within the series as a whole. It was basically supposed to be my take of "Zero Mission" before there ever was an actual Metroid: Zero Mission. In essence, this is the version of Metroid that I feel Nintendo should have given us back in 1986, and would have if they'd have put me on their quality control team, hee hee...

Here's a descriptive list of the most significant changes in the hack, of which I have been plugging away at off and on for the last four years...

====================
* The level design, which constitutes the heart of what Metroid Begins is and is based on the original game's maps, has been given an overhaul and completely tightened up, almost to the point of linearity from the later Metroid games...but not quite. You will need most of the items, including all beams, and your wits to get through this one. It will be very hard to jerk the game around and sequence-break. Yet you'll hardly be boxed in to one path either, and you'll be forced to make some tough yet necessary decisions. Prepare to make some sacrifices to get a better time, and prepare to backtrack all the way to hell to get 100% of items! The level design has also been optimised to prevent against many errors present in the original game...forget getting hopelessly stuck in corners and having to invent new cuss words while you furiously hit RESET. And forget falling victim to dirty tricks. (Remember that ledgeless pit?) Ahem, well, okay...there are a few new dirty tricks. But nothing nearly as difficult to recover from. Basically, don't be surprised if you recognize many things and areas from the original Metroid. It's just that now, the way to get through them is...different... And don't be too shocked when you learn that some things are not what they appear to be...

* The new level design has been painstakingly created around the existing doors, items, and other things that the password system reads without moving any of these from their original places, save for Brinstar's Ice Beam which doesn't register in the password system anyway. This means that, unlike quite a bit of Metroid hacks out there, all known passwords will work with this version with no problems. Yay... (BTW, if I tell anyone where I hid that wayward Ice Beam now then I'll have to kill them. Oh, well, there's always the one in Norfair. Then again...)

* Metroid Begins has been given a complete graphics overhaul. All new color pallette sets in all areas created by myself that I feel are better than the original ones are used, yet stay true to the spirit of the original game. Also, new sprite and tile graphics have been included, ripped from a Jorge Fuentes hack called "Metroid Omega" and slightly modified by myself to fit within the framework of Metroid Begins. I've also added a couple of graphics goodies in the mix myself where needed, and a freeware font by Toma to make the game compatible with PocketNES. The reason I used Jorge's graphics in my hack was because, quite frankly, well... that cat owns my ass at graphics creation!! My goal in creating Metroid Begins was to give the hack only the best it deserved whatever it took, even if it meant throwing my own ego out in the trash to do it. I hacked for the game itself, not for my own glory...and the game is much better as a result.

* Little things here and there. New title screens, story, and start and password screens created by myself. Also, slight ASM/game mechanics hacks to fit in with new level design and to facilitate better balance (Samus jumps higher with Hi-Jump boots, pickup amounts on energy balls and missiles left behind by dead enemies has changed slightly, etc.). All five endings have been re-drawn, a combination of Jorge's graphics and my own, and the ending story has been re-written and the credits have been slightly re-vamped.

* The game not only embraces the usage of the Mid-Air Bomb Boost Jump but in fact requires it in order to complete the game. Hi-Jump Boots are required to get through this adventure, but by themselves they will be just shy of enough, hence using the Mid-Air Bomb Boost is essential.

* Many errors, tricks, and cheat arounds facilitated by poor design of the original game have been eliminated and made significantly null and void, with a few more to be eliminated in the works. (As of this writing, you can still do the wall/door trick, I am working on a workaround for this...)

* The introduction of a new feature not present in the original Metroid (due to the old level design) which takes advantage of a harmess quirk in the original programming of the game...Warp Zones! Much like the tunnels in Pac-Man, they allow travel from one side of the screen to the other in vertical passageways, and allow players in horizontal passages to travel through holes in the ceiling and re-appear out of the lava below, and vice versa. Many of these areas must be traversed in order to complete the game, and some require use of the Wave Beam/Long Beam combo to pass. Also...expect to see some strategically-placed one-way doors and also one way vertical passages which not only travel only down but also travel only UP!

* Some notable changes in Tourian: More Metroids than you can shake a stick at. Mother Brain room has been redesigned to prevent from travelling backwards and is a dramatic one-shot affair preceded by a one-way door...no turning back! Escape from Tourian is also much harder than it was before...you may be using quite a bit of the allotted time to get out of Dodge before everything goes critical. And just wait until you kill Mother Brain and the entire screen goes into "red alert"...
====================

The background story, as you've probably guessed, is basically the same. However, I wrote a new version of it to accompany the hack, written from the unique perspective of a time traveller named Kirk Bradford Myers from 1500 or so years ahead of Samus Aran's own future who knows of the lure and fables that surround Samus's first mission to Zebes and how they have been expressed in different ways in 20th and 21st century videogames by explorers from "his" own time. Those guys up at Nintendo not telling us something, heh? Anyway, "he" explains that "he" created Metroid Begins as a testament to "his" own version of events that happened on Zebes on August 6 3986 based on "his" own research and findings. A different take on the story with the ending results being the same. Writing it from this perspective allows for the possibility of Metroid Begins as well as the other two games to sit on the Metroid timeline believably without conflicting each other, as it writes itself and the other two games off as "versions of events" rather than the actual truth which remains in question...

Just have a couple of things left to do (Touch-ups in ending credits, test for full compatibility with PocketNES) before actual playtesting can begin. Then I can finally get some screenshots up here and make you all drool, instead of just blowing promises into the wind. Take care, all...

Kudos!

I've used NES Pallette Editor to find and make quite a few changes in my upcoming hack Metroid Begins, but in doing so I learned a valuable lesson that almost lost me all of my hard work...DO NOT SAVE WITH THIS PROGRAM! A sound word of advice...

NES Pallette Editor has this nasty habit of "adding" bytes into a ROM when it saves, making the ROM un-editable within certain level editors that verify that the ROM you're trying to edit is for that program by checking the number of bytes in the ROM. I actually rendered one of my copies of Metroid Begins unusable with MetEdit by saving with this thing...it's a good thing I keep multiple backups!

These days, I use NES Pallette Editor only as a tool for looking, and use it in conjunction with a hex editor on which I do all my editing and saving.

On a side note about saving...NES Pallette Editor is an excellent program for "encrypting" ROM hacks if you have created a hack and don't wish for someone else to bring it up in a level editor and tear out all of it's secrets. I will be "encrypting" Metroid Begins in this manner. Just make sure that you wish to make no further changes to the ROM afterwards, or that you have a back-up copy that you can still change.

Thanks for the good word, peoples...

Hey, Fetts. Screenshots are going to be made during final playtesting, which should be occurring very shortly, within the next couple of weeks, considering that the only thing I have left to do before then as of this writing is to ensure PocketNES compatibility. I want to create and post screenshots when I am 99% sure that nothing else level-wise and graphics-wise is going to be changing in the game. Believe me, I'm just as anxious to get screenshots up as you are to see them, but I don't want to jump the gun on anything.

Metroid: Generations sounds like a very interesting title, MP2E...however, I feel it is inappropriate for my particular hack since it is basically a re-make fo the original game. Metroid: Generations sounds like it could be a good title for a direct sequel or even a prequel to Metroid Begins, so I'll keep it in mind and, if I do end up using it, I will give you credit for it in the future.

I plan to do two playtests. The first one involves walking every single area of the map forwards, backwards, sideways, upside down, and inside out, while collecting 100% of items. After I've determined that my level design is on track with no major snafus, then I'll do a timed run to determine the manner in which I'll have to change the times required to achieve certain endings. Because trust me, folks, you are never going to get through this one in an hour. Not unless you cheat. After that, things should be pretty much finished.

With the time that remains before final release, I'm going to be ripping a page from GameMkr24's little book of ideas by writing a manual to accompany the game, much as he did for Zelda Challenge: Outlands. It will contain a new take on the Metroid story, partial maps, and information on all the new features needed to get through the game. Hopefully I can get this all done by the August 6th deadline this year...the .IPS itself will definitely be finished by that time.

Kudos to all!

Posted on 02-03-06 01:21 PM, in Why hack Mario? Link
Most people who begin hacking seem to cut their teeth on Super Mario Bros, because it's an easy, straightforward jumping-off point. Besides, association through familiarity with already established standards definitely helps a ROMhackers initial case that everyone should check out their hack. Since Super Mario Bros. was a good game to start with, perhaps many feel that people will believe that their hack also must be at least worth a try, because it is still Super Mario Bros. at it's heart.

Let me use as an example a game which I instead cut my own teeth on, a game I have an unequaled love for...Metroid. Instead of writing it off for it's errors and fatal design flaws, I took it and shaped it around it's well-balanced play engine into the game I always believed it had the potential to be. Kept the good, threw out the bad and made it better. That takes a true love for the game, and any game in which a great deal of caring has been invested is bound to be a good hack. HOWEVER...if I were hacking a game such as, say, Lunar Pool, a game not too many have played or established with a familiar standard, perhaps less people would be inclined to try it out, even if it is a rather good hack. Which may explain also why many people immediately reach for Mario...

I do plan on digging into Super Mario Bros. and doing something unique and different with it, something along the lines of Commander Mario. I'm just not sure what I want to do yet. And I can't really get a good idea until I take a little bit of time and effort to dig into the mechanics of the game and figure out what's what, so that I know what my limitations are. A ROMhacker's best tool is an intimate knowledge of the ROM he/she is attempting to hack.

BTW, on a side note..about the aforementioned Lunar Pool. I would really like to do a new one of that one day. I can't believe that no one has tried their hand at that one yet, as that game is just screaming out to be hacked!

Posted on 02-04-06 03:32 PM, in A letter from Bowser to Dr. Mario Link
That story is hilarious! LMAO!! It's really cool to see a piece of fan fiction that's unusually tongue-in-cheek. Nice... Sort of makes you wonder just what kind of beneficial ruler Bowser would actually be. If he can't even figure out how not to get a girl pregnant, the Mushroom Kingdom under the rule of his iron fist is doomed. But look at it this way...at least he's taking responsibility and raising all seven of the little hellions himself, which means that even Bowser has the sense to face his responsibilities to be a father, his only endearing quality. (Guys, take notes!) Although I will admit, Mother's Day has got to be pure hell...

Her majesty the princess Peach Toadstool may be a slut, but that matters very little in the scope of things as far as Mario is concerned. Think about it...if you were a big fat cigar-chomping turd wrestler from Brooklyn who smelled like gasoline who was fresh out of a relationship with an ungrateful little cuss named Pauline and a girl like Peach wanted you, would YOU turn away from her cries for "HELP!"?? Yeah, I'd take on Koopa Troopas and jump over bottomless pits while lava licked at my crotch to get a piece of that action, too! Mario's not stupid...he knows that losers can't be choosers. Especially when their biggest claim to fame at the time is saving a girl at one of his construction sites from a huge gorilla that Mario knew he had no chance of batting against, then being told by the girl he saved that she thought that they were "moving too fast in light of what had happened". Poor Mario!

The rest, as they say, is history. Mario walked out in a huff, then came back with his mob-boss brother Luigi and they collectively beat the hell out of Pauline with hammers. She survived her ordeal, but the cops were out in full force looking for them while they attempted to make their escape and cross into New Jersey through the sewers. Good thing they found that strange glowing green pipe which whisked them both away from their pursuers forever to the magical land of possible redemption...

Mario won't be back for a while. Him and his brother have worn out their welcome in New York. And rumor has it that not only the police, but Pauline's father and brothers are out right now looking for his ass. I hear that the rabbit died...

Posted on 02-18-06 09:12 PM, in Joke Marriage Proposals Link
Take some good advice to heart, coming from a happily engaged man himself...

A marriage proposal is not something that is to be bestowed upon someone lightly, as the person it is bestowed upon is going to be under the immediate impression that you are being serious if they haven't been previously told it is a joke beforehand.

She will undoubtedly have one of three reactions to this:

One She will think that things are moving too fast for her personal comfort, and you will have to endure the humiliation of being rejected publicly in front of thousands of people, however easily she tries to let you down. All of this carries the risk of jeopardizing the relationship.

Two She will be elated, overcome with happiness that you have invested as much of your feelings in her as you have up to this point, and she will happily accept. You will then have the...trust me on this..."unpleasant" task of letting her know afterwards that it was all a big joke. It may have been a cute little joke to you maybe, but to her...well, imagine that Ed McMahon from Publisher's Clearing House knocked on your door on Super Bowl Sunday and told you you'd won ten million dollars, then five minutes later he apologized to you and told you they went to the wrong address. You get the idea. All of this carries the risk of jeopardizing your life.

Three She will be embarrassed beyond words, too much to do anything but bury her face in her own knees. Not good for anyone involved...

Trust me, there is nothing worse then being built up for a big letdown, except for perhaps having your private parts removed against your will with a dull jigsaw. If you would like to test her to see her reactions to things, remove a big long green booger from your nose and eat it in front of her and see what she does. If your relationship can survive that, it can pretty much survive anything reasonable! :) Using a marriage proposal as a test of someone's clout, I feel, is going beyond reasonable and crossing the line into sadistic.

So take a good bit of advice for a long, healthy, and happy relationship, and skip the marriage proposal thing unless you really mean it from the heart. And when you do propose and mean it from the heart, take one more simple bit of advice...do NOT do it on the scoreboard at a stadium. Or in the middle of a bowling alley. Or in the middle of a bar when you are adequately shit-faced and won't remember any of it. Or even publicly for that matter. Believe me, just the two of you together and a romantic setting all around will work wonders and make for a beautiful proposal she will never forget. I know from personal experience. :)

One last bit of advice, just based on my personal preference...avoid "themed" weddings at all costs. Especially ones involving the presence of Disney characters, chainsaw-weilding maniacs, grass skirts, mosh pits, flying hockey pucks, Klingons, and roller coasters. Oh, and scoreboards.

Amen to that!

I was in the mood to try out the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe hack the other night and wanted to see what that was all about. So I went to Romhacking.net to retrieve it. Lo and behold, it would appear that the site is not operating at all at this time.

I thought it was just my browser, or perhaps a temporary glitch in the server. Gave it a few days before saying anything...no change. I sincerely hope that this site is not down for good, it had a lot of potential.

Posted on 02-20-06 10:01 AM, in Metroid Pallete question (cause I'm stupid) Link
I can help you all out with this one.

I had trouble looking for this, too, while I was hacking Metroid Begins, because the pallettes that truly affect Samus's colors are not the ones you'd think they are and is not the one editable with Metedit. In fact, pallette 04 in each area as far as I can tell does nothing, except perhaps reinforces the true Samus/red door pallettes...

Thanks to help from Sean Kelly, who did a minor Metroid hack called Riffroid, I was able to finally locate these obscure pallettes through using a bit of trial and error. Keep in mind that Samus's color pallette needs to be changed individually for each of the five areas, and that the red doors and missile display in the game uses the exact same color pallettes, whether Samus is using missiles, is wearing the Varia, is in Justin Bailey mode, etc. This is why activating missiles in the original Metroid causes the red doors to glow...because the pallette switches for both of them. (This quirk has been weeded out and corrected for Metroid Begins). This can make for some interesting effects if one is creative enough...

One of Samus's colors will always stay the same, one will change with acquisition of the Varia, and one will change when missiles are activated. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that a red shade is the non-changing part of Samus's pallette, unless you are willing to change the color of the red doors. The Varia/Non-Varia colors should be two colors that mix equally well with the non-changing color if the latter is used for shading. For Samus in my hack, I am using dark yellow and light purple as the V/NV color, since both mix well with red. It also keeps the red doors looking normal with their new shading.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the correct ROM addresses for Samus's pallettes. For the first four pallettes listed below in all areas, the game is pulling the red color of her helmet from the "Samus Beams In 4th Color Cycle" helmet color since this never changes, and then mixing it with the gun]visor and armor colors from one of these first four pallettes, which change depending on Samus's status.

Dude Man, anything I can do to help, no problem. I figure that if I had access to this information then why horde it? I'm sure that plenty of other hackers who are having the same trouble (like I did) can benefit from this. I sure wish this had been posted somewhere when I was trying to figure it out! I figure the least I can do is save others the hair ripping I had to go through...

Your tilework in that hack looks beautiful! I wish I had that level of artistic ability...as it is, my hack will use tiles and sprites by Jorge Fuentes remodified by myself. What is the name of your hack?

One more thing, a suggestion. You might want to try sticking to yellow (or orange) and red exclusively for Samus's color scheme, then paint just the visor and the gun dark green. Make the missile change color the green one, and make the color when Samus's missiles are activated a very bright blue. This has a nice effect that when missiles are activated, only her visor and her gun light up, and appear to glow in contrast to the rest of her. I did this for Metroid Begins and it looks fantastic.

Happy hacking. Glad I could help. And thanks for the shoutout in the credits!

Posted on 02-20-06 05:32 PM, in So let's say you have to make a rather interesting choice... Link
Let's take away all the people stupider than me, and here are the reasons why:

In my opinion, living life is about bettering oneself in every regard. Therefore there is nothing wrong with currently being the stupidest person on the planet so long as there are others which you can learn from and grow. Just because you are stupid now does not mean that you have to remain that way. The choice is yours.

At the very least, if you so choose to accept your current rank of stupidity in the gene pool, you can rest with the knowledge that it offers an unprecedented level of security in that things are getting taken well care of for you, and you have little worries in that regard. Stupid people are more likely to let things go to hell and push the button and get it over with and kill each other than smarter people. Who's company would you rather be in? Being the smartest person on the planet and watching everyone destroy themselves as you preach to them until you are blue in the face while they do it anyway is a miserable, lonely existence.

Stupidity to me is not a measure of how much you already know but how much you are willing to be open-minded and learn and how quickly you can do so, and also entails the ability to look inside and see the truth in oneself. With that being said, I find that in my daily life, people I consider beneath me in the brains department are the largest source of my frustration and anxiety. Imagine the stress and the early heart attacks that can be avoided if these people no longer existed! You'd actually live longer. You'd eventually be a better teacher, because your students would be better learners. And there would always be something for you to yet learn which validates your reason to continue on through this life.

Oh, and no worries about those who belittle you because they know that you are beneath them on some level. Smarter people, at least the ones I'm talking about, will not do that, and will respect you for what you are whatever that is and lovingly and gently encourage you to become more if that's possible. [A good philosophy for ROMhackers in general to employ, by the way! ]

My two cents for today...
