Hi. I basically love making mario 3 sprites (will also do mario 2, mario world, mega man, etc) and would love to help anyone with a project. I'd love to see the things I make in a game, or even bring any creative character to life that you may have invented, but I don't know pooey about hacking games. I guess if anyone has advice on software that allows me to add custom sprites to mario 3, that would be helpful as well. Anyway, good to be here, hope I can help someone customize a game!

Wow, it looks like you are completely redesigning SMB! These are very cool graphics, how do you modify them? I kind of agree with stifu though, I never really liked the original clouds, I don't think anything you do to them will make them look good.. I think it would look better with cartoony ones.

I also noticed that mario is the only thing without a distinct black outline, so I modified him as well. How do you post a picture directly, without a link?

Anyway, awesome stuff Dahrk, if I could help you create some sprites I would love to help you! (or anyone for that matter)

Thanks. I just got mario workshop yesterday and I have been messing around with it. Lots of fun! The only problem is that I can move objects and modify background elements, but I can't do the one thing I really want to do... make enemy graphics. If there is any editing software for Mario 3 that allows this, please tell me. Or if anyone has a project that I can help with, which allows me to just unleash my sprite artwork dispite my lack of programming knowledge, PM me.

I just got a tile editor and searched around for pieces of the koopa troopa in Mario 3, and made this guy. I'm a noob (3 days old), so this is pretty exciting for me.

[img src="http://home.comcast.net/~valdroni/SHYGUY_1.PNG"]

If anyone wants to use it, great, just tell me so I can play the game you put it in! Also, I'm always interested in helping create new, custom enemies for your games, especially now that I have discovered how to do it! (previously I have just been making sprites in DeluxePaint).

to download the original game with ShyGuy in it, go here:
Edit: [No ROM Links] ~DahrkDaiz

I like the way he looks, except the fact that I can't change certain colors. It seems like there are only 4 color options: clear, black, and two colors that vary. So when I am working on the tile for ShyGuy's mask, there is no white color, only tan, but when I work on the body area, there is no tan color, only white. That is why there is a white rim on the edge of his mask, it's a new tile. Thats also why he has orange fists. Anyway, is there a way to modify the color pallete? Or even better, is there a better meathod to modify villains, which doesn't require fishing for tiles?

Step on him and kick the shell, I think you will like what you see. But again, when he is stomped, his mask goes from tan to solid white because of that damn color pallete.

Well, I read all the FAQ and stickies and didn't read about the ROM rule. So I won't do that again. How do you make an IPS patch, and what is it?

And I know it makes for an ordinary hack, because I wasn't really trying to do anything revolutionary. Just make a new enemy. It took me a few hours. I think it is a good quality sprite though, especially for cobbling it together through that mess of tile information you get out of Tile Layer Pro. I hope at least the sprite isn't considered ordinary, I personally have never played a hacked game that had a custom character looking that polished.

Anyway, now I've got 3 questions:

1: how do you manipulate color palletes for individual tiles? (I don't want to change the color scheme for the whole game)

2: Is there any easier way to modify enemies than fishing through tiles? Another editor or something?

3: What is an IPS patch and how do I make one? My overall goal here is to just pump out some enemies that you guys can pick up and place in you own games. (I'll start with mario 2 to 3- Shyguy, Phanto, etc, all rerendered as though the mario 3 programmers made them.

AAAaand I might as well take another shot at posting a picture. (probably should have instructions for that in the FAQ as well, for dummies like me.)

I think it looks pretty nice.

and here he is in the hack that I am working on.

I think it looks pretty spiffy, except for the mask becoming all white when you step on him. Which is why I hope someone can answer question no. 1! The only mask color available when he was walking was tan, and when stepped on was white.

anyway, if anyone wants to request a specific character for their game or use this one, tell me. The main reason I joined this board was to make enemies (not among you, but in games!)

Here is a new link to just the PATCH to make a ShyGuy-- no ROM.

And here is a patch to replace the Rotodisk with Phanto, and gives Podobo a little more of a Super Mario World look.

podobo has a little Phanto still flashes like Rotodisk, but it kind of works. makes him more "magical". and the mouth animation is so fast you can barely see it.

NetSplit -- thanks for that link to the Art of Rom Hacking, and to you and ImInvisible for help making an IPS patch.

ImInvisible -- you got it, just customizing enemies. In fact, here is the Phanto. Check back here weekly for your custom enemy needs! I'm also taking requests, if anyone has any.

Shyguy - I'm glad you approve, sir! After all, I wouldn't want to put your likeness in a game without your complete appro...waitasecond... you'r not Shyguy at all! You're...{rips off mask} AMY THE HEDGEHOG!

HyperHacker-
1) link killed. I removed the file.
2) use <> -- Thanks
3) yeah, I didn't really know how to make him look when he was stunned. The shape had to be symmetrical (programmed to be a symmetrical shell), so I opted to make im looking head-on, slightly stuck in the ground. The problem is, a ShyGuy head on is basically a bell shape, just like the shell, so, dang. I may mess around with it.

Yeah, I would definitely prefer to accompany these new sprites with similarly new character behaviors, like being pick-uppable and rideable (they actually can be picked up, but only after being stepped on - just like koopa troopas). The fact is, I am not at all capable of that kind of programming. What I would really like to do is team up with someone who can make uniquely programmed enemies, and make good crisp sprites to compliment their work. Too often it seems that those who are capable of making cool alterations to the programming are not capable of making very good sprites. Ideally, if someone, for instance, could make a Lakitu that drops Hot Foots instead of Spiny's eggs, I could change the figure into a pirahna plant-guy and the cloud into a floating pipe or something. You get the idea.

I'm basically hoping someone has a mario 1,2 or 3 project, or any NES project for that matter, that they would like me to add some custom sprites to.

And I went ahead and drew up that fire plant -Lakitu guy, because that actually sounded like a good idea.

Yeah, Dahrk, I actually talked to you maybe a year ago about making sprites -- I did a variation of your Warkitu character, replacing lakitu with a Pidgit guy on a mini clown ship. Remember?

of course, now I know that it's more complicated than making animated frames; you have to work with tiles and palettes, etc.so this pidget version won't work as is. But anyway, even though you have already said you work alone, DahrkDaiz,I think I would not dissapoint if you ever have an assignment for me. I'd love to put graphics over something with custom behavior. But I would also be happy to get in contact with anyone else who has a simpler hack that just rearranges the environment, and wants to have some new sprites.

How does a person send/recieve a PM, by the way? that also isn't in the FAQ.

By the way, where do I go to see your Fire Snifit? Can I download a patch somewhere?

Hey, I'm kind of a n00b, but I do love graphics editing and sprites. Not really interested in the other stuff. I would probalby only want to help with the Mario World hack. I only know how to work with tiles on NES roms, so I would need to learn a little, but PM me. Also, you might want to respond in this thread also, and tell me how to access the PMs on this site (n00b, remember?)

I may also help with music, if that is possible to edit.

Some of the sprites I am working on are in this thread: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=1818

Wow, I wasn't expecting any controversy over this thread! But since no moderators have frozen it, I guess it has more merit than a "naked mario" thread. Although that did give me an idea...

That's true, unfortunately I could only do the Cobrats as Pirhana Plants if I made the Cobrats head on or something. Same problem with Phanto for the Sun, since the sun is also a symmetrical enemy, with only half the image programmed for both sides. I still tried making the Phanto for the sun, since Phanto is almost symmetrical anyway, but I ran into other problems.

Anyway, Great suggestions, that's the kind of stuff I want. Here is what I have for you.

A lot of green characters, huh? This is not an actual screen shot, but it shows all of the characters you can download. Here's where to get 'em. The names should be self-explanitory.

http://home.comcast.net/~valdroni/COBRAT_FOR_PLANT.ips

http://home.comcast.net/~valdroni/POKEY_FOR_SPIKE.ips

http://home.comcast.net/~valdroni/PHANTO_FOR_BOO_2.ips

http://home.comcast.net/~valdroni/BIRDIE_FOR_SPIKE.ips

and if you can't wait to see the characters, just add "_TEST" to the name, and go to that new web adress. The character will be the first thing you see in these test versions. For example, "PHANTO_FOR_BOO_2_TEST.ips" will make phanto at the beginning of the first level.

Tell me if any of these files don't work. I hope they all do, and I hope you like them! I'm particularly proud of the Phanto. You will notice a little more animation to him than in mario 2. The junior Cobrats are pretty neat too.

See ya guys, and give me more suggestions. If you are developing your own hack and just need help making a new enemy graphic, I'm your man.
