Yeah, it looks good enough for a hack that looks like it doesn't have any effort put into it. And from what I've seen and the little bit I played (don't wanna have to play a game with no proper ending), this hack definitely deserves something better.

Trace over some other letters and pretend you made them. Also, the words are way too small to be not centered. I don't know what that means but I think it would look a little better with the words "Mario's Return" centered.

Also the curtains bother me. just add like some edges, since the background's blue and the shading is super-flat they look like Mario Paint curtains except not as good.

If you could describe what would look better, maybe one of us could make something for you?

Posted on 07-22-06 06:32 PM, in How can I balance SMW's gameplay? Link
First of all, spinjump allowing you to avoid spiky enemies would be good if one jump avoided spikey enemies and pressing the other jump allowed you to avoid/hurt normal enemies, who would hurt you if you were using the other jump. That would be cool. I have no idea how to make that make sense, though.

Infinite lives is good. I like it.

No powerups, yeah, because frankly, firepower and cape (especially cape) are pretty overpowered. Do what someone else said with the "start small every level", that works pretty well. Then you can make it so no matter what size/power you are/have, you die in one hit when you hit stuff and make it so you can only spinjump when you're big so you can have fun games of "get the mushroom" or something. That works. But really I dunno.

Make it so Yoshi only has a set amount of hits or you can't jump on him again when he decides to run off. Or maybe he dies instantly. Whatever. Yoshi's not that overpowered, except for blue shell and rainbow shell.

Anyway. Using that system, you can have a bunch of long, fun levels involving the cape (toning it down) and the fireballs (I dunno how you'd underpower this, probably make it so it acts like you jumped on things so you can knock stuff around but not really kill any of the super-tough enemies) without just flying through the entire level and not getting hurt because you're flying. Also if you make it so you can kick out koopas and knock their shells with the fireball, knocking the shells around aimlessly could be kind of dangerous if you made it so the koopas were on a bridge only enemies can stand on. And you were like one thing below that. And you were supposed to hit something else. I dunno.

Anyway. Glyph Phoenix, you're a cool dude and I appreciate how you realize that SMW has many flaws. High five for that and trying to approach it in a reasonable manner so I can't go back to Top Secret Area every other level so I can become omnipotent.

also make it so if yoshi eats a bob-omb he explodes

I totally want to see that.

Posted on 07-25-06 09:24 AM, in SMW Hacker User Bar... (yes it belongs here) Link
Okay, I'm going to sum up what I understand about this thread.

1. The SMW Hacker User Bar is stupid because it's a screenshot from a hack that only uses SMAS graphics, therefore making it appear that all hacks are shoddy level design graphic rips.
2. Peter_AC really isn't bragging or pointing anything out at first, but XKeeper comes in and gets miffed at him anyway because he thinks his hack is dumb (because all it does is re-use stuff that's been used in the past and if you wanted to play that you could just play the actual game) and he's bragging about it. Then Pete totally ruins the small upper hand he had by saying "It's not my fault you're jealous." Blah blah blah whatever.
3. Alastor hates catgirls because they're made out of sandpaper and tries his best to rip graphics and kill both God and catgirls so God can't figure that he wants a last-minute addition and put them in.
4. HyperFishface spent twelve hours drawing awesome graphics no one's using for some reason. I mean seriously! Also, he's somehow going to make catgirls in the future, probably by creating a bunch of hacks with negative rips, which I have no idea how he's gonna do that.
5. Userbars are terrible. If someone cared about that stuff, they'd read your profile, probably.
6. Glyph Phoenix and Alastor are both jerks and both of them kick a lot of ass in a good way. Therefore they must be rivals. Death rivals. I demand that both of them fight to the death. Everyone should be like them, then they'd all kill each other and since no one would be left all the stupid people would be gone.
7. SuperMaquerel, despite his obvious shortcomings and failures to turn his little sister into some sort of catgirl he could marry by gluing a cat to her head, is still not dead. He gave up with his experiments and just had sex with the cat instead. Also some people at this board need to be reassured about that kind of stuff, they worry about him. You know, the part where he had sex with a cat. If he wasn't, he'd probably be doing something worse.

Okay, so, userbars are retarded, especially the hilariously ironic ones. Alastor and Kyouji Craw will fight to the death (this is a battle on the inside! and then xkeeper has to build a tiny ship and they go into his body and it takes an hour or something) and the winner fights Glyph Phoenix. Then whoever's left at the end gets the honor of killing the first and hopefully only catgirl, who MegaMackdaddyerel may or may not have created in nine months. If not they can just go over and eat a lot of ice cream.

(also this has nothing to do with anything but is Kyouji Craw the super-form of Alastor the Stylish, because that would be cool or is it the other way around also if you're having trouble beating Glyph Phoenix now he probably also has a super secret form that you totally don't know about, called like Awesome Laser Ninja Hydro-Glyphic Bird or something and you'll have to call upon the power of your friends or something and then a bunch of people boo and you get depressed and have to go see a psychiatrist and then the psychiatrist would actually be Glyph Phoenix and he'd trick you into killing yourself)

this has nothing to do with anything but famicom detective club part II is awesome to the max and they totally used EarthBound's font which made me feel tingly

Anyway, it did take some effort to put all those levels into the thing, block for block. I dunno about creative effort, but at least he spent some time on something. I mean, your hacks are good as copies and stuff, but, I mean, if I wanted to play SMB I'd play SMB. It's interesting as like a weird abstract project, sorta.

also that userbar is blurry anyway sharp pixels are way better

I've only had fun with SmarterChild once.

Wait, what the heck? Last month he kept on talking about how he loved emo music and it was his favorite genre. Now he's all like "I hate emo music. It's a terrible genre."

In conclusion, SmarterChild is a poser-loser.

Posted on 07-30-06 05:42 PM, in Hard Mode (Or: Struggling with Imperishable Night) Link
OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD. I love the Touhou series to the max! I totally played Perfect Cherry Blossom all day last night and yesterday and the day before that and I beat the Extra stage and the stage after Extra stage, etc., etc. I think I got, without continuing, to the Prismriver Sisters on Lunatic Mode for Perfect Cherry Blossom. It's a super super awesome series.

Imperishable Night is awesome, too, but...

It is absolute hell on the hardest difficulty. I am serious about this. Do not go onto the hardest difficulty unless you're prepared to practice each and every level repeatedly with one single character. Over and over. Imperishable Night's difficulty system is much more accurate than the other games. In the other games, Easy was easy, Normal was normal, Hard was kinda harder, and Lunatic was pretty damn hard. In Imperishable Night, Easy is really easy, Normal is normal-hard, Hard is really hard, and Lunatic is downright stupid. I highly suggest you beat the game with all the characters, then beat the game again (without continuing) on any difficulty with any number of lives. It's worth it.

Also. Other awesome parts of Imperishable Night include Last Word, which are unlockable super-moves that bosses use for no reason on Spell Card Practice. Some of them are really stupid, but most of them are only fifty seconds long.

Yeah, and if you beat the game twice (without continuing) and unlock Extra level, that's hard too. The actual level is actually pretty easy (the bullets are fast, but easy to dodge), but the boss is hard as hell. The extra boss in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is kinda hard, the extra boss in Perfect Cherry Blossom is easy, and the one in this game is really freaking hard. There's probably some kind of secret trick. I dunno. Tell me if you figure it out.

Anyway. In conclusion, Touhou is awesome and Imperishable Night is awesome and really hard. Just keep on trying, maybe go on an easier difficulty. After a while you'll learn the tricks to these sort of games and you'll be able to beat everything really easily.

[EDIT: As a test, I played Imperishable Night on Lunatic and my first death was a stupid accidental one getting hit by Wriggle Nightbug when she shows up for the second time just before she activated her spellcard. Lame. I put too much faith in the bullets disappearing, huh. (hahaha I just remembered I could have bombed, too, lame)]
[EDIT: okay I played it again and I got to the second level without losing a life[

Woah, I played this like a year ago, it was super-awesome and stuff. Mostly because Tomato was translating it for a really long time and kept on telling people to play it, so it was kind of hard not to. In addition to the game being super awesome like a really-awesome book, they did a sweet job with the translation (all the translation screens, the Soul Blazer and EarthBound fonts, etc.), so, yeah, this is an awesome game.

Hahahahaha, you tried to get all the 1/128 items? Yeah, the boost you miss at Magicant is really disappointing, pretty much the best thing to do is to only get the 1 iń 128 items that you can only get before you beat the boss and the enemies disappear then you come back at level 99 AFTER Magicant and just walk into everything and get the item. I've still never done it, though, I hate leveling and tedious luck stuff, etc.

I was like pretty young and I got everything in Spyro II. That was I think the first one I actually bothered to beat.

I also got everything in like, ah, Kirby's Adventure. That was a rad game, UFO was really awesome.

I got everything in Cave Story, I think, and beat it with like 3HP. I still had missles, though, and I didn't beat 'it' under three minutes... although, you know, I kinda like the stuff you get for below four minutes better.

I got everything ever in the first Kingdom Hearts, but I never bothered to get to Level 100. The second one I couldn't stand to bother to get everything at all. Luckily for me I was playing on Proud mode so I wasn't at a loss.

Okay, let's see here, I'm pretty sure right now I'm supposed to be playing a no PSI no equip low level EarthBound game as a joke, but I got tired after the 150th Runaway Dog. Also I'm suppposed to be trying to get all the items in a different file (on the Insane Cultist's PSI Caramel right now, takin' them out by walking into them). For mistakes, I kept on punching every fiftieth runaway dog and having to reset and go back like thirty. Lame.

Yeah, I can't see anything so I don't know.

Since I'm not adding anything remotely interesting to the topic, what happened to all the other awesome Zelda 3 hacks that were being worked on? Like, Dark Prophecy and Alternate Dimension or whatever. There were like three of them I really wanted to see. Did they all die or what? Or were they released and I never noticed?

I'd try EBExpand to expand your ROM to 4MB with little text block marks, then Lunar Expand to make it hit 6MB. That's what I do, anyway.

The EB hacking community is weird because we want to keep our patches as small as possible because we all have 56Ks. I think it'd be better if we just made the sacrifice of adding 3MB of empty space to the patches to make the original ROM bigger.

I normally don't like Dragon Warrior-esque grind-fests, but this one is pretty cool. I really like how you changed every single freaking thing in the entire game.

Also I died at that cheap Garland knockoff. Although I was like at level 3 with only a $50 shooty gun. Heheheh.

Obviously, you climb out of your car, shimmy down to the front of it. Then you rip off your licence plate and chuck one of the sharp edges at the tire of the fire truck. Then you can rip off your rear fender and reach out in front of the car with it to lift up the giant pig and throw it into the blades of the helicopter. If that doesn't cause the helicopter to crash, at least the helicopter-pilot will be blinded by the fact that it's raining pig's blood. If it's still after you like some sort of maddening death-ground helicopter, you should have tire chains in your car somewhere, as a responsible driver. Take those out and swing them around the blades of the helicopter, then swing the helicopter around and throw it into the fire truck, which may or may not still be next to you. If for some reason the helicopter is still after you, dump a bunch of caltrops in the road and the helicopter will crash.

If you should ever need to turn, use your body weight to divert the direction the car's going. You should be able to do that.

An easier solution would be to rip off your car door, jump onto the fire truck (both of you are going at the exact same speed for no reason), break the door open with the door, throw whoever's in there into your car, then just drive really really fast.

Alternately, you could say "the correct answer" or something like that but that would be lame and uninteresting.

As a general rule of thumb, when making villages in a video game, try not to make all of them look exactly the freaking same, unless it's for style.

Also try not to take ugly screenshots by pressing like F1 in ZSNES and probably some other button in SNES9X. Save in PNG, too, JPEG makes it look like it fell in the toilet.

I might play it in a little bit, I really appreciate that he made his own graphics even if he's not the best at them. The title screen is a pretty good example of what you can make with little or no artistic ability and still have it look pretty darn cool. Level design I dunno, I'll check it out.

this has nothing to do with anything but mother 3 is a fantastamagorical game

I played KHII and it's pretty good

But it's nowhere near as funny and weird as Mother 3

I think the point of the first MOTHER game was to suck really hard while having pretty-good dialogue because it succeeded really well in doing that

I "made up" this name when I was like, I dunno, ten. I needed a screenname (one that was better than like bikerchick3948322 because I obviously wasn't gonna listen to my friends) and so I just chose this one because I guess I'm kind of radioactive from sitting in front of the computer and putting my face to the granite floor.

Somewhere out there there are other people on the internet named Radiation. In that case, I append like FWUG to the front of my name. Heheheheh. FWUG is pretty old, I dunno what happened to that.

You all know why I'm posting this. I'm asking for approval to post in the ROM Hacking boards because stupid people went and gunked it all up.

So, here it is. The History of ROM Hacking and What I Can Do For The Future Of the Community. But someone already probably made that joke. So, I'll just, uh, post the actual stuff now.

Okay, so, I'm Radiation, I'm 7'4, a Libra,

Hey, I'm Radiation, and I sometimes post in the ROM Hacking boards. Sometimes. Not all the time. This is like the second-tier place I visit. Uh. So, I'd like to continue posting in them without heavy hinderance. I'm gonna tell the truth. I don't post anything extremely interesting. Mostly just screenshot critiques, etc. BUT! I'm always sure to add as much constructive criticism, etc. to my posts, etc., that other people haven't already posted in the topic. etc. So you could say I'm just a constructive critcism guy.

BUT! Have I done any actual ROM Hacking? Am I ever going to actually make a topic? Someday. Someyear, maybe. BUT! This one time, I made an EarthBound hack, and it was really good. So I guess I can count that. It's here. It's buggy as hell and requires you to expand it once with EBEXPAND.exe and then again with Lunar Expand before patching, but as of now it is the most advanced EarthBound hack to date. Ever. Hat Quest is better, though. You know. It has LucasArts adventure game references.

Okay. So, I'm Radiation, I post in threads and tell people what's looking good and what I think is dumb and maybe I can fix. Otherwise, I stay out of there. If there's a topic, it's not like I'm gonna go like "hey there's a topic I should post in it wait I don't have anything to say I better tell them that". There are better posters than me, and better ROM Hackers than me. But if I can help just one person making a crappy hack to make it slightly less crappy, my day will be made.

AND ON THE THIRD DAY GOD CREATED THE CORRUPTION TOOL WITH WHICH

Okay. I can understand if you guys want to keep me out of your forum because I'm weird and stuff. It might just be for the better. But damn, for what it is, that's a sexy moogle avatar.

...

sorry.

Okay, I gotta get some more references in before this is over. I run the PKHack section on the sidebar on Starmen.net, but I have no idea what to do because someone hid all the documentation and no one's helping me do it. So don't check that out. It'd make me look worse.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with anything, but I got into ROM Hacking when I was really young and we had NESTICLE and Super Mario Bros. and a Super Mario Bros. hacking utility on our crappy old Windows 95. Then I put like fifty firebars and ten bowsers. I didn't have internet access, but I have the terrible gut feeling that my hacks (all of which ended at the first level) somehow managed to escape my grasp and into someone else's hands.

Okay. You can look through my post history if you're wondering about anything else, 'cuz it's not very long, you could skim it. I'm a pretty decent guy, I think. That's the best post I've ever made.

...

sorry.

also this has nothing to do with anything but I'm pumped about the witty way you are obviously going to reply to this

maybe you will do it sideways but then again maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up huh

damn that is a sexy moogle

also 100th post MAKE IT COUNT

if I lose I'm going to have to battle you

.

that is my poor man's starfield battle background
