As long as games have been around, people have been trying to complete them in a way that could be considered "perfect". Such things might include speed running, collecting 99 of all items, filling in every section of the map, etc.

I once tried to get all of the 1/128 items in EarthBound without cheating, and I was moderatly successful after about 2 weeks of on and off attempts, only to find that once I got to Magicent, I missed out on the huge bonus due to the glitch I'm sure the EarthBound players here are aware of.

Another time, I took the trouble of getting the GBHSP as early as possible in M&L: SSS, only to swap it out for the Bonus Ring while killing random monsters, and saved after I missed the Bowser Fang. THAT was irritating. I had taken the trouble to always get the highest stat rolls too...

Right now, I'm trying to get a perfect Metroid: Zero Mission game. Since a time of 00:00:01 isn't possible, I'm instead letting the game sit on for long periods of time, in order to actually max out the time. I have no idea when it maxes though, so it could stop at 24:59:59, 99:59:59, 255:59:59, or, God forbid, 65535:59:59.

So, what kind of weird attempts have you made to try to achieve perfection in a video game? And what about major screwups that made you have to start over?

I managed to get 142,390,000G in Luigi's Mansion which is the maximum amount of money you can get.

It wasn't easy to get it though. You need to be saving and loading a lot every time I got some treasure. I made sure I got every single gold coin, bills, and other stuff that popped out of the treasure spots. Missing just one single gold coin means I have to load my game again. I also had to catch all the portrait ghosts in one suck because you can get a big pearl for doing that. Blue ghosts were annoying as well, especially the blackout only ghosts since you can't save your game when you manage to get all the treasure from those ghosts.

The most annoying part of getting everything is that damn gold mouse that randomly appears when you dropped down the chimney that leads into the sealed room. If you don't see it the first time you enter the Sealed Room, you had to go back all the way to the Foyer using the mirror and then start going to the roof which takes very long because Luigi is slow.

I've beaten Megaman 2,3, and X without losing a life. I've also collected 100% items in Super Metroid, but that's not hard to do.

I'm not aware of it... mind explaining?

Edit: Tatrion PMed me about it.

I rate my perfect games based on how hard I have to try to get everything. Say in Super Metroid, I'm to the point where I don't have to think to get above 90% in under three hours, so I'd say that's perfection (basically, the remaining percent items are things that I deem unnecessary and don't feel like going back and getting, but if I want full percent I just make sure to go and get them). Also, in Super Metroid, getting items in totally out of order ways through clever wall and bomb jumping. It's good times. So yeah, doing things like that in any game is how I rate perfection.

FYI, the current "most perfect" game of Super Metroid stands at 100% in 55 minutes.

Usually I will try to go the extra mile with a game and, after beaing the last boss, will go back and complete any optional bosses / dungeons / sidequests / collections / whatever.

I'm not really a stats whore however, so I will only bother building perfect stats if it's necessary to complete my goals.

For example, the game I've been working on recently is a Universe mode playthrough of Star Ocean 2. I don't know if I will have to hit the level cap of 255 - I very well might to beat the optional bosses - But if I don't have to then I won't.

The only game I really remember trying to complete, well more of the series than one game is Pokemon. I only completed Pokemon Yellow and found out I get nothing for it.

Trying to fully "perfect" a game can drive you crazy unless you know exactly what you're doing. Most cases I'm not fully sure what I'm doing so...

I got around 140/151 Pokemon in my ancient Red version, which I'm pretty sure is still laying around somewhere. I'd try to get the rest, but 1. I don't have a Blue version and 2. I lost my link cable.

I managed to catch every single Pokemon in my old Silver version except for Celebi. That's because I had Gold as well as Red, Blue, and Yellow versions. Plus, I had a Game Boy and a Game Boy Color as well as a game link cable so I was able to trade between versions.

Sadly, I don't have any of those anymore.

Hahahahaha, you tried to get all the 1/128 items? Yeah, the boost you miss at Magicant is really disappointing, pretty much the best thing to do is to only get the 1 iń 128 items that you can only get before you beat the boss and the enemies disappear then you come back at level 99 AFTER Magicant and just walk into everything and get the item. I've still never done it, though, I hate leveling and tedious luck stuff, etc.

I was like pretty young and I got everything in Spyro II. That was I think the first one I actually bothered to beat.

I also got everything in like, ah, Kirby's Adventure. That was a rad game, UFO was really awesome.

I got everything in Cave Story, I think, and beat it with like 3HP. I still had missles, though, and I didn't beat 'it' under three minutes... although, you know, I kinda like the stuff you get for below four minutes better.

I got everything ever in the first Kingdom Hearts, but I never bothered to get to Level 100. The second one I couldn't stand to bother to get everything at all. Luckily for me I was playing on Proud mode so I wasn't at a loss.

Okay, let's see here, I'm pretty sure right now I'm supposed to be playing a no PSI no equip low level EarthBound game as a joke, but I got tired after the 150th Runaway Dog. Also I'm suppposed to be trying to get all the items in a different file (on the Insane Cultist's PSI Caramel right now, takin' them out by walking into them). For mistakes, I kept on punching every fiftieth runaway dog and having to reset and go back like thirty. Lame.

I don't think I could ever do that, but I do know that my friend had never seen the best ending in super metroid, so I say down and played it, beat it in about 2:15, and had 93% completion. Now mind you, this was basically going through to show him the good ending and to get items that you need extra powers to get before you get those powers to get the "Aww, ohh" affect.

On the EB thread, I've never tried the 1/128 items because of the luck involved. I hate those things, but I did once try to get the Sword of Kings for Poo and fought for about 10 hours with those crazy starmen, but never got it. Then about a year ago, I was playing it and one of the starmen gave me the sword. I didn't go around searching for starmen, it was just one of the ones on the way, never been so happy with myself in EB in my entire life.

On the nature of optional challenges, I essentially beat FFT with Ramza solo. I got bored halfway through and quit.

It's a lot easier than it sounds:

Spoiler:
First off, you either have to start with the ability "yell", or just get really lucky the during the first battle. If you have yell, just hide in a corner and yell yourself while Delita dies like an idiot, and once your speed is 50 run around and kill everything before they even get another turn. If you don't have yell, stick with Delita and just pray you get lucky enough to win. If you beat the first fight, you've basically won.

From then on out, you just hide in a corner (preferably a spot where only 1 enemy can reach you at a time), yell yourself like crazy, and potion (later auto-potion) yourself when you're hurt. Because of the number of times you have to yell yourself each battle, you can easily get all the important skills from each class in one battle.

Then you work your way up the mage ladder and learn all the calculate skills. Then you become a ninja and get blade grasp. Then you go back to being a squire with math, blade grasp, magic attack up, and move+3. (Obviously you might have to tinker this to fit certain battles.) If you have a fire shield / ice shield / Excalibur equipped, you can cast fire3/ice3/holy on yourself to heal yourself. Nobody in the game will stand up to you.

Problem is it takes FOREVER, which is why I quit.
Cynthia

If there's something to be gained by playing a game "perfectly", then I'll do it. Yoshi's Island is an easy example; if you want to access the hidden levels, you need all those perfect scores.

Challenge Mode in SMBDX is another great example; you *want* to complete all the levels and find the red coins/Yoshi Egg while racking up the target score. It's incredibly addictive and you feel like you've accomplished something when you finish it.

You just reminded me of Yoshi's Island. I did manage to complete the whole game 100%, even the bonus levels. Most levels were easy but a few drove me crazy.

I believe one of the muddy levels with all the monkeys drove me half insane because of all the jumping to each rotating ledges and the dodging enemies while getting the red coins.

The worst level to get past was definately the level with all the skiing involved. Most of the time, I got too pissed off to continue playing it. Eventually though, I managed to get everything in it.
