I've heard, but not verified, that Super Mario Advance is just SMB2 in an NES emulator that uses its own graphics and sounds instead of the game's. Though that makes me wonder how things like that springy platform at the beginning and giant Shy Guys were implemented.

Not surprising. If they don't mind pissing everyone else off with their intros, of course they won't mind taking credit for everyone else's work.

The least they could do is use some unused bit at the end of SRAM/EEPROM/whatever to store some bit so as to only show it the first time you play.

an arena or two that's totally enclosed, and requires some other way to get a knock out (lava, spikes, classic Mario Bros. Fireball, etc).

The original SSB had something like this if you used Gameshark. You could play on the Race To The Finish stage in VS mode, and it would keep going as long as player 1 never got to the end (which wasn't actually that hard to avoid). There was no way to get knocked out, but eventually players would just randomly die for no apparent reason. (Maybe getting so much damage they fly too fast for the collision detection to work and go through the walls.)

Finally, what would kick ass is a Mario Kart/Smash Bros hybrid. Basically Mario Kart but with wackier tracks based on various games, characters from other games instead of all Mario characters (does anyone even play as DK?) and crazier items, some of them character-specific like in Double Dash.

The G/S series had a few unused things...namely, alot of the "beta" testing menues, which are actualy pretty stupid but still kind of un to play around, but if I remmeber correctly it takes some amount of hacking in order to re-enable those properly (I did it once in the past, and I think HyperHacker did a public release of those menus enabled once).

The only menu I found functional in G/S was pretty lame, just a palette test. You can view each Pokémon and change its colours, and see what moves it can learn. The text isn't translated so it shows up as garbage, unless you replace the font with Japanese.
Crystal kept the mobile link menus, though. They're also not fully translated or completed (some crash the game) but you can do things with them. Even a beta music track which I actually thought was one of the best in the game. (Also, one of the options was misspelled. )


The advanced series is a little stranger. Both RU/SA/E and FR/LG have a peculiar unused sprite from a REALLY old NES game by GAMEFREAK, which had nothing to do with Pokemon what so ever. The sprite couldn't be more random either, it's a generic NPC type character, not even of the standard dimensions of the advanced game's sprite "format". It serves absolutly no purpose and appears to never be used.

Got a pic? But yeah, GBA games seem to have a lot of unused stuff that shouldn't even be there. What the hell is that one Zelda sound doing in Super Mario Advance?

Actually I'm surprised you don't see more message boards in places like that. It'd be like The Pirate Bay, but as a forum.

I guess it'd just suck with all the people joining to ask "can sum1 upload The Sims 2" and never really posting. Though it doesn't have to be a forum for warez, just one where they're allowed.

This is about when I usually suggest that the intro be a separate ROM entirely, included with the unmodified game. 31337 |)UMP3R D00DZ get to show off their fancy graphics and "look what I can do" effects without ruining anything. It's win-win.

Speaking of which, a message to those of you who dump ROMs: It is not 1985. .nfo is a reserved file extension; plain text should be stored in .txt files. Also, nobody uses the Terminal font anymore.
