Heh, it's like the stages are made of 20% of ground, the rest being gaps... Typical Googie.
Funny how you just can't leave SMB1, despite your original plans.

Ah yeah, okay... It's cool if you can fix that too, but as you said, it's harmless anyway.

Well, you definitely caught my interest with your editor (and the bug fixes will make me feel like it's no longer inferior to Seiken 3 )...
I thought I'd quit ROM hacking right after my first hack, but I may want to start another one... I'd need a decent partner though.

I didn't actually play the hack, so I can't comment on it as a whole, but simply on the screenshots you posted... If you prefer, the other guy(s) of the team has(ve) similar level design tastes as you.

The fact Insectduel worked on this lowers the game rating by default...
But I like the goomba sprite...
Anyway, hard hack, as expected... I even managed to die within the first 2 seconds, thinking that red part at the beginning of the first level was some kind of bridge...

Considering how advanced most NES emulators are, it's mostly a matter of taste... My 2 favorites are Jnes and Nestopia. Nestopia, however, seems to display funny colors... At least SMB doesn't look the same with it and Jnes.

Edit: I received hack threats because of my insectduel comment above, haha...

And yeah, the game isn't boring... However, the use of the cape, although quite original, is also very restrictive... You can't add extra power-ups, can you ? At least I've never seen anyone do that in their hack, yet it sounds like something everything would want to do...

How about a race between Wario and Waluigi ? 2 in 1, and it'd be more original.
Besides, Wario and Waluigi like to screw around, they aren't "serious" like Mario and Luigi, so a race while the world is like in utter chaos (think of a little story...) could suit them quite well, in my opinion...

Xkeeper: from the known bugs detailed in the readme:

"-the color fadeout at the end of a level is messed up.
(BMF's fadefix patch don't seem work with my hack )"

If ghettoyouth's hack could work on a real SNES, then it's all good and I support his choice. It doesn't matter whether there are problems with ZSNES, as they'll end up getting fixed.
However, if his hack exploits one or more Snes9x specific issues to work correctly, then that's obviously wrong.

I actually played the game with ZSNES (recent SVN), and didn't notice any real problem.

The real question is: does it not work right because ZSNES has now an incorrect behavior, or because they corrected a wrong behavior you were taking advantage of ?

I guess checking whether your hack works the way you want it with bsnes would pretty much determine whether your hack is okay or not.

Doesn't look too bad overall, but you get a big minus in my books for mixing very different graphic styles.

Screen 3: Yoshi Island style platforms
Screen 4: SMB1-3 (SMAS) style background
Screen 6: Mega Drive/Genesis looking background

I just finished it... Nice little game, although nothing really special.

I found a tiny typo, right at the beginning of the end, that pink girl tells you "You're brought peace back to the Book Worlds" instead of "You've...".

Next game to try: Madara.

Driver face graphics: compressed at 30200.
Squashed driver graphics: compressed somewhere.

As for the color palettes, they're compressed and you can find their address in d4s' notes.
What you should do, for example, is open your SMK ROM with Tile Molester (or whatever you want, although I don't know the other programs, so can't help with them), load a ZST file containing the appropriate color palettes (ie: a savestate taken at the title screen, player selection, during races or wherever the drivers appear)...
Then go through each of the color palettes of this file until you find the right ones. After that, export the drivers that now have their right colors...

Is that what you wanted ?

Not only does your Tutorial idea sound boring as hell, but it's your first hack as you said, so you're most likely not really experienced enough to explain others how to hack.

Good thread deserves bump, and I have a question anyway.

There are so many things that could be edited in the game, apart from maps, like monster (names, stats, magics, patterns etc), weapon supers (damage, movement..), magics, dialogues, switches... I wonder just how much freedom this editor will give you... If it's going to be like a little RPG Maker.

By the way, although adding more than 3 different playable characters is probably loads of work, how about increasing the number of different enemies ? One of the few things I didn't like about SoM was the fact you'd keep on fighting the same enemies with different colors, which was especially boring for the bosses.
Even if the new enemies had the exact same behavior as some already existing ones, it would be cool if you could have a wider range of monster sprites...

Hmm, looks like it doesn't let you access the Star Road path, as it makes you enter a different level... Also, the door after the castle of world 2 still blocks your way.

Still, nice find.

I found a little bug...

Weapon names are higher than they should be, resulting in the selection cursor being too low next to each name...
I'm using Nestopia, and this doesn't happen with the original version of the game.

(I just deleted and reposted this message because I thought I had found another bug, but no )
