I've read these forums for a while, and I'm happy that my first post will be a contribution and not a stupid question. Unknown Bit 9 makes an enemy invulnerable to damage from mario sliding down a slope. Found it accidently when playing with reflecting fireballs in a room with slopes. Tested it with other several other sprites.

Posted on 05-18-06 01:44 AM, in Boss editing ideas/help Link
Since boss editing tools seem sparse, I'm using a different approach in my hack: trying to edit common enemies greatly to become bosses. My problem is I need a way to make the level cleared once the boss is defeated. I have a few ideas in mind, but am still too new at this to go about developing them by myself.

First idea: if someone knew what part of the Big Boo Boss's sprite code made the level clear when he died, then maybe it could be applied to other sprites.

Second idea: For enemies that spawn other sprites when stomped they could simply spawn the goal point sphere, but how do I make other sprites(chuck for example) spawn something when they die?

Third idea: Instead of making the boss's death directly trigger clearing the level, maybe a custom block could be made that is only passable when one enemy has been killed. (There's a simliar block included in block tool, but it requires you don't land after stomping the enemy.)

If someone could provide a solution similiar to these, or an original one it would be greatly appreciated.

Would this be more appropriate in the asm request thread? I was hoping someone might provide a quick fix that I didn't know of...

Everyone's smashing him for the orange background in the rain pic, no ones heard of sun showers ? Also, I don't think its fair to judge level design based on a few screen shots. How much can you tell about how a level plays from one screen shot? A level could contain various custom blocks and edited sprites that change gameplay dynamics drastically, a screenshot might not tell you this. I'm not saying his level design is good, just that I think people are trying to extrapolate more data from screenshots then is reasonable.

This is a modified fire mario power up. Graphics/palletes have been changed, the fireballs(snow flakes) shoot straight and slower, and they now turn enemies into standable ice blocks. Seems like a kinda obvious idea, so I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't already in a hack i haven't played.
I did this with no ASM, just used editors and changed some rom values, I'm sure one of the real hackers here could improve on this. I like it because it allows for some interesting game play changes. Like a vertical level you can only climb by freezing and scaling your frozen enemies. Or a narrow scrolling horizontal level with many enemies, if your not careful your own iceblocks could crush you.

The sound effect from below is one of the things I'd like to change, but i dont know the rom address of the sound effect for the sprite im using for the iceblock. The iceblock is actually the light switch from bowsers castle, modified in sprite tweaker. I needed a sprite that behaves like a block, and this seemed like the only appropriate choice. People with asm knowledge could make this power up much better. I plan on learning asm when im done with finals...I know how to code in a couple of other languages so maybe it won't take me that long?

Looking through the custom block request thread i saw bio mention that DarhkDaiz made an ice mario before that made throw blocks, does any one have anymore information on this? I tried to search for DarhkDaiz and it just brought me back to the block request thread. What was the name of his hack that used this, and was it even a hack of SMW or another mario game?

I'd like to request several blocks, but I think it's a reasonable request becuase they are just combinations of existing custom blocks.
1.) A block that kills small mario and is standable for big mario. Also it is passable while spin jumping fo big mario, but will still kill small mario if he spin jumps.

2.)A block that acts like water if mario is big, but kills him if he's small.

3.)A block similiar to 1.), only passable by spin jumping big mario, kills big and small mario.

I don't know any asm, so maybe its not as easy as I think, but if someone could make these it would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you have a better method in mind, but if you tried improving my approach, it would just involve making the light switch sprite behave like a throw block, that would fix the problem with it appearing in mario's hand. I don't know how that would effect the motion of the throw block however. Anyway, does anyone know the rom address for the light switch sound effect?

Nope, no special editor for power ups, just a hex editor to change some values(I can't code asm yet) a tile layer for graphics and sprite tweaker for palettes.
My snow flake sprite could use a real spriter's artistic touch though . I wanted to use a pine cone and not a snow flake but that looked even worse...
If you fix your ice mario bio I would like to see it .

Posted on 05-21-06 03:42 PM, in Need somebody to insert the Super mario bros 3 OW tiles Link
This should be easy to do yourself. The graphics for the OW can be edited with a tile layer the same as any other graphics in the game. Get a tiler layer that supports importing bmp's. I use Tiler layer pro, I think alot of people here use YY-CHR, you should be able to find both pretty easy on here. Easiest way to find the OW graphics is to just use the joined GFX files option in lunar magic. Then if you have a reference of the graphics u want to insert...

All you have to do is break that up into smaller pics, save as bmps, and import to the tile layer, reinsert in LM when your done.

The water fall reminds me of one of those cut away anatomy drawings from bio class...

If you really want to be original thats how I would change it. But I don't think the adventures of mario on uterus mountain sounds like the next big hack.

On a more constructive note. I like the green one better, the mountain looks too much like sky in the other one. Maybe if you added trees to the side of the mountains instead of just the crest it would look less flat. To make it stop looking like a uterus you could add a few things to the water fall, make it lighter then the other water and animate it like Xeruss suggested. Also, some mist or clouds at the bottom of the water fall would also make it look less flat.

I already said above, saving it as a BMP, you can insert it into the tile map, when u save the tile map it will be a bin file.

Posted on 05-21-06 05:51 PM, in Global Warming? Link
I came to this board for the hacking forums, but this thread caught my interest. Many of you are talking about the validity of various scientific models and making statements like "I say that like every real* scientist under the sun sees the evidence and has concluded that there is a definite link. " I'd like to ask how many of you are actually involved in the scientific community.

I am not an environmental scientist, I am a physicist. I am one semester from recieveing my bachelors, and I plan on going to grad school. I am currently doing my part to find alternative energy sources, probably a larger part then anyone here. I work in a nano power research laboratory. My particular research is in characterizing matierals for use in photo- and alpha- voltaics(solar cells and radio batteries).

Also, my minor is in philosophy and I have taken several courses specifically on epistemology, the study of what we can know. My focus in my minor has been the philosophy of science, and in studying it I've learned that politicalization of science is a HUGE issue. The corruption is usually not on the part of the scientists(usually), but the way it works is that research groups need funding, usually alot of it, science is expensive. These groups appeal to various goverment organiztions for MOST of this money. My current research is funded by SOCOM, DARPA and NRO(This should appease liberals that think military spending is only good for death and destruction, in this case war is the largest motive for developing these new energy sources). Research that sounds appealing to beaurocrat's is much more easily funded. If the subject of research can be politicized, then certain groups will be funded rather then others. Global warming is not unique in this respect, (don't flame me for this) but cancer research recieves WAY to much money in the united states, because everyone can identify it as a noble cause. The same money could be applied to other types of medical research with greater benefit to mankind.

Based on my own knowledge of the subject and from talking to many proffesors in physics, chemistry and enviromental science, I would agree that at BEST global warming research is non-conclusive, we may be in a warming trend, if so how much, if its that much how much is our fault. What many people don't realize is that climate science is in its infancy, we have tried to predict the weather since the dawn of man, but much of climate science is very VERY new. In the 1970's there was a political panic about global cooling, funny how no one seems to remember that.
Also, the largest producer of green house gases is not mankind, its forests, especially evergreens. Aside from developing alternative energy(I'm doing my part), one large way man can reduce green house gases is to STOP interfering with forest fires, they are naturally occuring and the presence of mankind has reduced there effect globably on forest control .

Almost forgot, ever watch a ice cube melt in a glass of water? Did you see the water level raise? No? That's because solids floating in fluid displace a volume of fluid proportional to there mass and water is more dense then ice. Amazing how people forget 7th grade science class.

I am very intrested in hearing which of you fellow posters are involved in the scientific community.

I've edited my post, just because I miss spoke doesn't not mean you should disregard the entire post, if your going to close your eyes and ears to a scientist then you really should not have anything to say about this subject. What are your qualifications to have anything to say about the subject. Also, if you'd like to learn more about global cooling you could just wiki it.

I love wiki.

I dont see why more american's dont feel offended by this, it's very much so in conflict with american values. it's defnatly NOT a very public issue. Americans impose there values on other nations(particularly our enemies in the war on terror). I think china's political relationship with the US is under represented in the news lately. Is anyone else aware that a war with china may be in the near future because of Taiwan's teetering status? I'm not saying antying about who's right or wrong in this case, I'm just saying these are important issues that aren't publicized nearly enough.

I am aware that American values aren't universal, I agree with you entirely. My point is that we are peculiarly selective on which nations we try to impose those values on, like you said china is untouchable, there not going to bullied around like other nations we try to impose democracy on. Yet when we do try to impose values, we tend to do so with a sense of rightousness.
As far the Taiwan issue, I think you should read up on it more, and if you feel you have read enough about I think you need to do a little more to persuade me to agree with you at least. Im not alone in my sentiment, the United States has declared it will side with Taiwan if China takes military action against Taiwan first and China has stated under which conditions it will take military action. So when you say "next to no feasible scenario" China has already declared exactly what that scenario is. While this may not seem like realistic fear to you, many people do take this possibility seriously, or at least that is impression I have gotten from many of my chinese/twainese friends. Also the "economic" methods I've heard proposed are very harsh. Particulary, I've heard that China has the cabaplity of totaly cutting off Taiwan's electrical power, and that they are considering using this. I'm not saying we should panic about it, but that is a possibility, your response however seems to deem this scenario as totatly unrealistic on the grounds that such a war would be terribly devasting to both parties. I'm still open to be swayed though mind, you simple haven't said enough yet to change my opinion on this subject, I admit my sources for information on this subject aren't the best, so please, educate me.

I've seen the more expieranced people here suggest several times that us new hackers rip our own graphics, and I'm i've been doing that for some of the graphics for my hack so far. When I rip graphics I just run an emulator and take screenshots, and then edit those images. No one ever told me of any ripping techniques and this seemed like the most obvious method. So this feels like a stupid question, but is this how everyone does it?? ? ?

Thanks everyone, this should help alot, sounds like there are few ways to do this. I couldn't find this advice anywhere else, maybe this should be linked to in the that thread with tools for newbies, it would have been useful to me starting, and it might encourage people to not just take graphics from other hacks.
