Hey, I'm new here. I am working with Hyrule Magic (great program), and I'm interested in learning how to edit HEX, and practice with alttp. Does anyone have, or know where I can obtain a ROM map for zelda 3 so I know what I'm doing a little better? Feel free to email me any info or post it here. Thanks!

I have Orochimaru's guide already, that's a big help, but I didn't have zeldaflow, that may help. Thanks for the info, cool site btw!

Yeah, that may be what I'm looking for. As I said, I'm interested in learning to edit hex, I see where it will come in handy in the future. I figure I should try to learn it with zelda3 since that's what I'd like to focus my efforts on. The only problem is that there seems to be very little info out there, so without it I really wouldn't know what I was doing. But it may be better if I learn with a game I can find some info on like smb1, or zelda1 so I can begin to see the pattern.

Great choice! The Lolo games are by far the best puzzle games for NES, can't wait to play it! You're using haled v1.0, or is there an update? Btw, this is probably old news, but does anyone know what happened to Dragon Eye Studios? Did the same people start a new site?

Posted on 05-18-06 05:18 PM, in ROM hackers mass interview Link
I am newer at this, and am very eager to learn, and do more. My game of choice to work with is Zelda3 for SNES.

1.What draws you to the ROM hacking community?

Large companies make these great games, but often don't like to re-use the same engine for sequels. Rom hacking allows the fans to do that themselves. You can enjoy your old favorites again for the first time. When game fans gain more advanced hacking skills, they can even create new features to the game, and make a masterpice that competes with the original (a shining example if this is Mario Adventure by DahrkDaiz). I't also very fun!

2. Do you think playing/modifying hacked ROMs should be more user friendly?

Totally! Creating game editors that have user friendly interfaces will give anyone a chance to change their favorite game, and it will also inspire people to get into asm hacking that will make their game stand from the rest. Also, no matter how user friendly it is, it's still not easy. Completing a good hack takes real time and effort, and people will always want to do more. People worry about sites being flooded with tons of bad/boring hacks, but once that becomes a problem, sites hosting will seperate them all by game, type, and user rating.

3.What are the advantages/disadvantages of ROM hacking vs. ripped sprites with code written from scratch?

With rom hacking you already have a game engine to work with, otherwise it could take lots of time, or a team of people to complete. Maybe one day there will be a more simple program like "Game Maker" or something which will put your custom game into NES or SNES format. That would of coure be very hard to create, and probably be up to Nintendo to create. Maybe one day!

4. Do you think there are limits to what people should be allowed to do with their games?

Never! They will only get more advanced. I could see 8 or 16 bit games being ported to newer systems to add more features, like what Nintendo did with Zelda 4 Swords. Also, people look down upon game hackers using others' code with their own hacks, but that's what hacking is all about. But if that is done, the original modders do deserve to be credited.

5.What do you think about the future of the ROM hacking community?

You can tell that Nintendo, and others are seeing how turned on people are by this, which is why they are developing fun simpler games, and all that Gameboy Advance stuff too. Maybe one day they will be creating game-specific editors for people to use, or even distribute a disc with a collection of the best fan made games out there, that would be very cool of them. Already the new Megaman game for the psp will have a level editor included, and there will be more to come!

Good luck on your paper!

Talk to the people at the cheatsync website, they're doing some pretty amazing stuff with GTA LCS, they may be able to get you started. Also www.pspupdates.com may have some helpful links or forums. Good Luck!

I'll probably wind up getting both if there are going to be distinct differences in gameplay, or controls. But I'll get the Gamecube version first. Wii will be much too expensive, and probably unavailable for a while.

You'll probably have to extract the sprites from the ROM yourself. Go to http://www.zophar.net/utilities/graphics.html for graphics hacking utilities. See the main page for more utilities and info! I hope that helps.

Yes, ratedo.com is running an auction for a Zelda 3 NES prototype (not the one that was on ebay a few months back). I believe it is the cartridge owned by the man writing this blog where you will find all the info I know about it: http://www.ratedo.com/articles/z3proto.html
You can view the auction is going here:
http://www.ratedo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=148

I sure hope the buyer will release the ROM, if the current owner doen't already have plans to do so! We'll see.

I've been following this story for a while. Mainly because I'm fascinated by the raging debate it has caused. I don't mean to get anyone riled up again. I'm just thought I'd bring it to people's attention. As much as it may be a ruse, there is a good possibility that there is a proto of the game out there. I have an old snes tips & tricks book that mentions the games development on the NES being scrapped, also Nintendo reps have acknowledged this several times. I'm just gonna watch & see. Oh yeah, I loved the fake rom btw! A very cruel joke.

A while back I caught wind of an editor for the game "Contra", maybe its still a WIP or not. Any info? Also a "Snake Rattle 'n Roll" editor would be awesome, but I doubt it since I never hear a thing about that game.

That's fun, a nice tribute! I'm glad that Lolo is still being appreciated, it is one of my all time favorites! The PSP game "PQ" is a similar type of puzzle game, only more advanced. Try it if you get a chance.

To patch:

1. You need the original ROM
2. The .ips patch
3. a patching program, I use IPSwin, it's very simple to use. I'm sure Lunar IPS isn't much different.
4. Copy the original ROM, re-title it to the name of the hack, or whatever you want to know it as.
5. Patch & Enjoy!

Posted on 05-29-06 05:34 PM, in Phillips CD-I Emulator? Link
Hey, I have some old Phillips CD-I disks I'd love to try and play. I found one main site for a CD-I emulator, but it can't boot original CD-I disks, won't support many ISO's, and Hasn't been updated for a while. Does anyone here know of another emu for CD-I , or any other system with some loophole that will allow it to magically boot CD-I disks? I doubt it, but maybe someone knows something I don't.

Thanks for your input. I do know about that website. It seems like a fair emulator, but unless I can find it for free, I won't mess with it. For $30 I can almost buy an actual cd-i system. Plus the emu is incomplete. I looked at the title support list, and many of the games listed show problems. Also it doesn't support the actual disks. If it were complete, then I'd probably pay the $30. Then again, if it were that complete Phillips would have sued him already. But it is all that's out there, and I appreciate the efforts of the creator.

Hey, I've never done flash animaion before, but I'd like to give it a shot. Does anyone know of a simple, easy to use flash program? Preferably one that is free. I'm just interested in making some simple cartoons with audio. So give me some names, or links if you know anything. Thanks!
