Wow. Just wow. I cant believe there will be a Mario64 editor available. Everything looks utterly incredible and you just know every single person who even remotely gives a crap about romhacking, WILL BE downloading your editor VL-Tone..heck even those who accidentally wander into this site will probably download this editor.
I have a million questions, like most people I'm sure. I'm just gonna wait for the editor, but I did want to ask one thing though. And I apologize if its been answered already. VL-Tone, you mentioned, "Edit the warp connection commands.(0x26)". What does that mean? Are you talking about the "warp" between levels? Like the 'warp' between the Castle hub level and Bob-omb Battlefield...or the 'warp' between Shifting sand land and the Pyramid? Would I be able to make the little igloo in Snow Man's Land lead to a Bowser level? Fantastic work VL-Tone. |

I'm assuming un-checking the box that says "Show Intro", disables the opening cinematics and the Ceres Station Part. But when I go to play my edited rom, I get a black screen.
Anybody else run into this problem? |

Bullshit. The "E3" name is wayyy to valuable to just be thrown away. Maybe it will be smaller and only attended by the little (or Big) guys. The "E3" experience is too legendary to not be taken advantage of. There will be a E3 07.

Interesting that this game would restore your faith in PC gaming..its a rip-off of a console game. Interesting again that this game would restore your faith in PC gaming..Guitar Hero restored my faith in console gaming. I bought a PS2 specifically to play Guitar Hero.
Anyways, FretsOnFIre is pretty damn cool. Not because its lack of originality, not because of the included songs (God those are horrible songs..all 3 of em), but because of the perennial favorite feature for all games....."Import Song." From the very moment I shredded through my first Guitar Hero solo I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I could import my own....and then make my own fret thingamabobs. Everyone whom Ive ever invited to play says the same thing. Some pretty big and annoying bugs hinder the import song feature, but with some wrestling and persistence, I was able to FREAK OUT!! to....the Super Mario 3 Ending Credits Theme. (It was the first .ogg file I could find) Fun Times. (edited by AlexAR on 08-10-06 01:19 PM) |

I was hoping this game might finally break me into these types of "Visual Novel" games, since its good to expand one's 'gaming horizon' if you will. Alas...after the first 10 minutes of reading and thinking and examining, I had to quickly play some Banjo Kazzooie to get the bitter taste out of my mouth. I just need to hop onto that last lava platform, use my special move to defeat the wicked witch, power up my mega blaster, collect 5 more tokens, 7 more hidden chests, and 8 more jiggies, then I can unlock the super secret cow level and see the special ending. pheww..I feel a lot better now. |

I have received a couple e-mails and pm's asking about progress on my Mario RPG. A couple people have also been asking me for permission to use my gfx and/or help them with their RPGMaker projects. I am going to address these issues here in his thread, hence...the 2 month bump. I have not been working on the game at all for several weeks. I have however reworked a lot of the tilesets into SuperStar Saga.
I am going to do 2 things. First, I am going to upload my tilesets for anyone to use in their projects. If you do, credit would be nice. These tilesets are pretty good if I do say so myself, but not 100% complete. Depending on how detailed you want your game to look, you may or may not have to add to the tileset. I will be more than willing to help anyone with this task. The second thing I am going to do is try to tie up as many loose ends in my Mario RPG so that I may upload a new Demo. This demo would be virtually identical to the original demo. Only differences would be the SuperStar Saga tilesets, some dialogue, some triggers nothing very big. After that, i will see what happens. I may pick up the project again. Really the only reason I stopped and am at a stand still with this, is because of the damn tilesets. Its really time consuming and boring having to rip and adjust the tiles for everything. Anyways. Enjoy. {edit} old Screenshots Removed (edited by AlexAR on 08-09-06 07:31 PM) (edited by AlexAR on 10-03-06 06:26 PM) |

I don't know about you guys, but I can play all the greats on my machine virtually problem free. Basically, just use both PJ64 and 1964. Together they can run any game with no compromises to anything.

I have made a water autotile. It makes building water edges a lot easier than building them piece by piece from the tileset. Unfortunately, autotiles are locked into 96 x 128 grid which cannot be increased in size, unlike tilesets and character grids which are a lot more flexible in terms of size.
So basically there are 2 choices. You can build your lakes and rivers using the awkwardly placed tiles in the tileset, or use the water autotile to build faster, but make Mario look like a giant when he is standing next the water. There is no way I could fix this without having planned ahead. I have also made an animated water tile. It was hastily put together, but it can easily be modified and made to look a lot better. Animated tiles are treated as autotiles, so just import it into your autotiles folder and then insert them into your tileset from the database window. Note: when placing this animated autotile, keep 'shift' help down. Or dont..you will see what I mean. As for making the hero invisible during cut-scenes, it is a VERY easy process. At least the way I have it set up is VERY easy. This method may not work for everyone, depending on the complexity of the cut-scene. My beginning cut-scene is just a series of transparent message boxes while the map scrolls to the right. To keep Mario (the Hero) from showing up..I have an auto starting event that uses the "Change Hero Transparency: Transparent" event. My message box events follow, then I have a teleport event to move Mario into his house (Starting Map) In that map I have another auto starting event that has a "Change Hero Transparency: Opaque" event to show Mario. (Be sure to add the "Erase Event" after or else the game will freeze) That should be all it takes. I will answer any questions anyone may have about all this stuff. {old Screenshots Removed} (edited by AlexAR on 08-10-06 09:28 PM) (edited by AlexAR on 08-10-06 09:47 PM) (edited by AlexAR on 10-03-06 06:27 PM) |

DarkAngel, don't let these guy's comments deter you from doing what you want. Plenty of graphic-only hacks have been published on the net and a lot of people really really like em.
I'm thinking the reason you got these harsh comments was because you did not specify exactly what you hacked. People were expecting all the levels to be completely changed..new music for every level and new enemies to battle. When they saw the "only" change was Mario's graphic they felt let down and then felt the need to have to berate you because of it. The bottom line is..hacking Super Mario Bros is just wayyy too damn easy to not have some new levels in there. My very first hack had new levels..and I'm an idiot. There is no reason for not using this beautiful program and creating something people will want to play. I don't think spending exactly 10 minutes to learn SMB Utility, then spending exactly 10 minutes to build a level is asking too much of anybody. And doing so will no doubt leave you with a higher quality, way more funner SMB hack. If you have any questions DarkAngel about SMB utility or anything, do not hesitate. Keep at it, and don't get discouraged. (edited by AlexAR on 08-11-06 08:56 PM) |

Kids hear, "Don't buy Bully, its too bloody, Don't buy Bully, it takes place in a school just like yours, Don't buy Bully, you may or may not be able to beat up your math teacher, Don't buy Bully, coming this October." Gee, I wonder if a kid could possibly be more excited about a video game. The media(Thompson AND G4TV) keep talking about violent video games and their effects on children, what the hell did they think was gonna happen. News, Commercial..children don't know the difference. They see that commercial of a lady playing New Super Mario Bros on her DS in the park, so they want that. They see Jack Thompson debating with that funny guy from the video game show about some game called Bully, so they want that. ..but yeah..its up the parents and shit. |

Seriously though, you should consider making your own tilesets if you're really into using RPGMaker. It will make you self-sufficient and give you much more power over the look of your game. I'd like to think that you (or anyone) can get a good enough idea of how I constructed these tilesets by just downloading the ones I provided earlier. Its not brain-surgery, just a little time consuming. Check out this site, its inspiring. As for a new demo, I'm gonna say about a week, it will still be a little rough around the edges and some parts will down right not work right, but it sure will be shiny. And yeah, I will zip it next time...or rar it...which is better at compressing this type of file? By the way the_man, I would love to see what you have done with my tilesets. Wanna create a thread of your own?..we can collaborate and shit. |

I hear this game has a level editor feature. And that you can share your levels though wifi with other PSP owners. Is it any good/fun/easy to use?
If I were ever to get a PSP, I would probably check this game out, if indeed the level editor feature is cool. |

There are like a hundred free image editors/drawing apps floating in the Internet I know. I figure I shouldn't have to be struggling with MS Paint when I'm sure there is something out there for me.
Does anyone have any recommendations to an easy to use, no BS features that I would never use. I don't need to have 100 layer support, or plug in support for weird looking effects. Basically, a perfect app for me right now would be an MS Paint with these extra features. 1. Crop..you know..the kind of crop that you just press a button and it crops all the white(Transparent) background around the image. 2. Replace color...select the color blue..then select the color red..press the button and it replaced all blue pixels with red, and or switches blue pixels with red and vice versa. 3. The ability to re size/stretch while keeping a high quality. When MS paint re sizes anything that isn't 200%..400%...it really skews up the picture. I know some apps have a pop up window that lets you choose the quality of the image before you re size resulting in a very clean accurate re size. 4. The ability to view a grid of any size. Mspaint grid feature basically just makes a 1pixel wide grid..not very useful. I want to be able to view a 32 x 32 pixel grid across my image to accurately align tiles and such. I guess I could just download GIMP, but like I said before, I would really like to avoid getting a big huge complex editor that has features I'm never going to use and will be to heavy for me to have multiple instances of it and/or have other apps running. My comp is not state of the art. I appreciate any comments. |

Ah that's to bad, the_man. Tilesets sure can be a chore, but its all part of the fun.
Anyways, I have been working on battle animations and effects. I made a nifty Hammer bros animation showing him throwing his hammer. I set it up so that there is no disconnect between enemy on battle-screen (Hammer Bro) and his attack animation. As in, its not like most old-school battles where the enemy just stands there as a fire ball pops out on top of him and flies towards the hero. No, I made it so the Hammer bro actually animates with his attack correctly. Here's a gif to show him off. In battle, he throws his hammer which travels off screen to the left, then it emerges to the right of the target (Mario or Wario) and proceeds to bonk him in the head. Yeah, I know he looks pixelated in that battle shot, and his health bar is too high. Minor annoyances which will get ironed out. Good stuff indeed. (edited by AlexAR on 08-16-06 11:15 PM) |

He is from Super Star Saga. All my gfx are gonna be from that game, some original gfx too. I made this really cool rolling block that I made for some puzzle sequences. You have to push blocks to form bridges and stepping stones. When you push em they roll with a cool effect. Here's another gif showing it off.
I just need to add the animation for when it rolls up and down. You know it wouldn't be that hard to make a battle sequence that LOOKS like Superstar saga. The functionality of pressing 'A' at the right moment would be a lot harder though. |
