I'd have to guess the answer to that "What the heck happened?" would be "Forum merge."

At any rate, I never noticed that road before. It looks nice... The building looks like it could use some work in general, but that's more of a personal preference. My main complaint is that the anti-aliasing against a white background still shows up as ugly on there.

It looks real nice. Now all you need to do is fix mario's graphics..so that he will go with his surroundings..i would suggest mario form M&L: SS.

Ive been giving the tileset a lot of thought. And Ive come to the conclusion that if I want this game to look right..I'm gonna have to..rip-off an existing Mario game completely..
lol I mean cuze..as cool as that Toad house may look..I would have to draw everything to that style or a style that would work..and that's a lot of work for this amateur.

I don't see myself "fixing" what I have already or drawing a whole new world. So ill just rip off a game. Ansem, you mentioned Superstar Saga. Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea. I can easily rip the graphics off that.. unless anybody else has any other ideas, I think ill do just that.

Now that's what I'm talking about..not very original..but a lot easier on the eyes. I actually had to do some major tinkering to get things to look OK...still better than anything I had before this. But now that it looks so much like Superstar Saga, I want to implement some of that game's features...lol Like the whole buddy system thing to get passed obstacles in the overworld.

I was thinking Mario would always be in front..and you could just switch out your partners ala Paper Mario. Since Luigi isn't nice in my game and doesnt join Mario, Im gonna have to think of..'original'..special partner moves..o oh.

Maybe you guys can help me out. Wario joins you first..then Yoshi and Toad joins last. One special move maybe could be Wario does his tackle move on Mario and sends him flying across a large gap..or through a wall..

As always input is greatly appreciated.

Finally, my beloved Toad House is a reality. I have to work on the dirt road more, but I think for the most part everything looks good.

As for some of the other graphics..like the battle scenes..should I completely stick to SuperStar Saga style? Or should I leave some of those high-rez pics of Mario and Goombas. It would be a mix of different styles since I'm not gonna find high-rez OR superstar saga graphics of all the enemies I want in the game.

I have received a couple e-mails and pm's asking about progress on my Mario RPG. A couple people have also been asking me for permission to use my gfx and/or help them with their RPGMaker projects. I am going to address these issues here in his thread, hence...the 2 month bump. I have not been working on the game at all for several weeks. I have however reworked a lot of the tilesets into SuperStar Saga.

I am going to do 2 things. First, I am going to upload my tilesets for anyone to use in their projects. If you do, credit would be nice. These tilesets are pretty good if I do say so myself, but not 100% complete. Depending on how detailed you want your game to look, you may or may not have to add to the tileset. I will be more than willing to help anyone with this task.

The second thing I am going to do is try to tie up as many loose ends in my Mario RPG so that I may upload a new Demo. This demo would be virtually identical to the original demo. Only differences would be the SuperStar Saga tilesets, some dialogue, some triggers nothing very big.

After that, i will see what happens. I may pick up the project again. Really the only reason I stopped and am at a stand still with this, is because of the damn tilesets. Its really time consuming and boring having to rip and adjust the tiles for everything.

Anyways. Enjoy.

I have made a water autotile. It makes building water edges a lot easier than building them piece by piece from the tileset. Unfortunately, autotiles are locked into 96 x 128 grid which cannot be increased in size, unlike tilesets and character grids which are a lot more flexible in terms of size.

So basically there are 2 choices. You can build your lakes and rivers using the awkwardly placed tiles in the tileset, or use the water autotile to build faster, but make Mario look like a giant when he is standing next the water. There is no way I could fix this without having planned ahead.

I have also made an animated water tile. It was hastily put together, but it can easily be modified and made to look a lot better. Animated tiles are treated as autotiles, so just import it into your autotiles folder and then insert them into your tileset from the database window. Note: when placing this animated autotile, keep 'shift' help down. Or dont..you will see what I mean.

As for making the hero invisible during cut-scenes, it is a VERY easy process. At least the way I have it set up is VERY easy. This method may not work for everyone, depending on the complexity of the cut-scene. My beginning cut-scene is just a series of transparent message boxes while the map scrolls to the right.

To keep Mario (the Hero) from showing up..I have an auto starting event that uses the "Change Hero Transparency: Transparent" event. My message box events follow, then I have a teleport event to move Mario into his house (Starting Map)

In that map I have another auto starting event that has a "Change Hero Transparency: Opaque" event to show Mario. (Be sure to add the "Erase Event" after or else the game will freeze) That should be all it takes. I will answer any questions anyone may have about all this stuff.

I think it should look completely SS saga style, so it would all match.

What? Am I your own personal tileset creator whose sole purpose is too provide you with high-quality Mario-themed tilesets? hehe..just playing.

Seriously though, you should consider making your own tilesets if you're really into using RPGMaker. It will make you self-sufficient and give you much more power over the look of your game. I'd like to think that you (or anyone) can get a good enough idea of how I constructed these tilesets by just downloading the ones I provided earlier. Its not brain-surgery, just a little time consuming. Check out this site, its inspiring.

As for a new demo, I'm gonna say about a week, it will still be a little rough around the edges and some parts will down right not work right, but it sure will be shiny. And yeah, I will zip it next time...or rar it...which is better at compressing this type of file?

By the way the_man, I would love to see what you have done with my tilesets. Wanna create a thread of your own?..we can collaborate and shit.

Ah that's to bad, the_man. Tilesets sure can be a chore, but its all part of the fun.

Anyways, I have been working on battle animations and effects. I made a nifty Hammer bros animation showing him throwing his hammer. I set it up so that there is no disconnect between enemy on battle-screen (Hammer Bro) and his attack animation. As in, its not like most old-school battles where the enemy just stands there as a fire ball pops out on top of him and flies towards the hero. No, I made it so the Hammer bro actually animates with his attack correctly.

Here's a gif to show him off.

In battle, he throws his hammer which travels off screen to the left, then it emerges to the right of the target (Mario or Wario) and proceeds to bonk him in the head. Yeah, I know he looks pixelated in that battle shot, and his health bar is too high. Minor annoyances which will get ironed out. Good stuff indeed.

He is from Super Star Saga. All my gfx are gonna be from that game, some original gfx too. I made this really cool rolling block that I made for some puzzle sequences. You have to push blocks to form bridges and stepping stones. When you push em they roll with a cool effect. Here's another gif showing it off.

I just need to add the animation for when it rolls up and down.

You know it wouldn't be that hard to make a battle sequence that LOOKS like Superstar saga. The functionality of pressing 'A' at the right moment would be a lot harder though.

It takes quite a bit to impress me nowadays, and I must say, as soon as I laid eyes on this, I gasped. It looks absolutely phenominal! If I had to complain about something, I would definitely say 2 things.

1. Don't use graphics that were already in RPG XP. They just stick out at ugly parts in your nice tilesets.

2. Change the battle scene. I know it has already been discussed, etc. but it needs to be done. (Well, technically it doesn't need to be, but the game would get more phenominal if you DO change it)

I had a question for you, and while it may sound stupid, I'm honestly curious - for the ? blocks...have you implemented a jump system so that you can get them?

All in all, this looks awesome. Truly. I'm officially impressed

I am very very happy to see that I impressed you S.N.N. I have always liked seeing all your screenshots of your Yoshi's Island hack. I seem to be the only guy keeping the "Game Creation" alive down here..hehe

Anyway, I can assure you that the final game will not have ANY of the RPG XP RTP default graphics. I just haven't gotten around to the battle scenes backgrounds yet. Probably cause I don't know what the backgrounds should look like. In M&L Super Star Saga the battles took place in a side view, so they wouldn't look to good in this battle scene..which brings us to the battle scene..lol

I'm no pro with Ruby, lets get that out of the way. I downright turn into puddy at the very sight of the Ruby Script. I have been able to implement some custom scripts that I have downloaded. And I have been able to tweak some menus, but I'm far from being comfortable messing with values down in there. I guess if I can find a Custom Battle Scene that looks like Superstar Saga, I might attempt to get it in there. But if it becomes anything even remotely complicated/frustrating, I don't think its worth it.

I just want to finish this up and actually be able to say that I completed a RPG game. I have so many projects half started that its sickening.

I believe I have enough substance in my GFX rips, original Music, and witty script to warrant a non-custom battle scene. The battle animations and effects will look good, trust me.

As for the ? Blocks. Yes, in my game, Mario can jump at will by pressing X. He will jump straight up. You cant exactly jump onto a higher platform or anything, but if there is a 1-tile wide gap, he will jump across it. If there is a ? block or a hidden block, he will hit it and activate whatever the block activates.

Not only that, when you switch to Wario, pressing X will make Wario do his ground pound move to activate switches on the floor, or knock over blocks. and when I implement Yoshi, pressing X will make Yoshi...make Yoshi...well I haven't figured out what his special move will be, but it sure will be cool. Wow..long post..

Sounds pretty damn awesome to me. Making a MLS battle scene is definitely not going to be easy, as you already stated. I think you could probably do it though, it would just take a bit of time. But of course, if it were too much of a hassle, I could understand you leaving the original not that it looks bad, it would just be complete with a MLSS battle scene

You should make Yoshi fling his tongue out of something/make eggs, seeing as he usually does that it most of the games he's in. Your choice though of course, just suggesting some stuff
