Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I & II. Enough said. ![]() But if you have a lot of time on your hands, go for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. |

You could also go old-school and play the Ultima/Might and Magic/Wizardry series, even though the latest ones aren't that great.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind has gotten pretty good reviews too if you don't mind something a few years older. I started playing a bit and was somewhat overwhelmed...I imagine Oblivion would be worse in that regard.

Yeah, Morrowind's not for everyone. If you like that kind of open-endedness and exploration, though, you'll love it. One of my favorite RPGs, but a lot of people don't like it.
I'd also recommend Neverwinter Nights. ![]() |

A bit of a bump, but I cannot sit back and let this thread die without at least mentioning Baldur's Gate and its sequel. The two greatest games I've ever played. And, let me tell you, I played the hell out of those games...

Wait until September when Neverwinter Nights 2 comes out. It's destined for greatness and funnity.

DAMN Obsidian for not releasing it until September! I'll be back at school by then, and my laptop would choke and die if I ever brought the NWN2 CD within five feet of it. And I'd feel like it was a waste to only buy the game to play while I'm at home where my more powerful (but gradually aging) desktop is...

Be lucky yours would only choke and die, Silvershield.
Mine would blow up within fifteen feet of most newer games. That's why on the rare occasions mom gets a game, she brings it straight into her room. Actually, though, I've not played Baldur's Gate or BG2 yet. I should probably look into remedying that situation... (edited by Cheveyo Chowilawu on 04-19-06 06:34 AM) |

You absoluetly can't go wrong with Fallout 2 or Baldur's Gate 2. The post-apocalyptic 50s retro-futurism in Fallout 2 sets an atmosphere unrivaled by any other RPG.

The only issue I had with the Fallout games, both the original and its sequel, was how terribly open-ended both were. Normally I'd say that's a good thing, but I found that each game was non-linear to the point that a player is often given absolutely zero direction in what he's supposed to accomplish. Otherwise, though, both Fallout and Fallout 2 (and, to a lesser degree, Fallout: Tactics, which was good but ultimately flawed) are unrivaled in their genre but have gone largely unnoticed.

I found that much more of a problem in other games like the Elder Scrolls series, where I'm usually left utterly confused whereas Fallout gives me enough pointers to keep me going in the 'right' direction.

Come to think of it, both Fallouts did have a distinct goal that was given from the beginning. But I found that, after finding the water control chip or the GECK, I was a bit aimless. More of a personal preference I guess...like I said, I still loved both games.

Betrayal and Return at/to Krondor. Two of the best damn games I played back in the day. Besides the fact that they're based off of some of the best books ever written by Raymond Feist, they have some awsome gameplay, and I believe that Betrayal at Krondor was rated as a top RPG one year by some magazine or another. I'm not sure if they run on anything higher then 95 or 98, but I don't doubt that there is a patch out somewhere for both.
As a matter of fact, I believe that Sierra has given Betrayal at Krondor out for free on the interweb. Try googling it. |

Meh. If you finish it to soon, just read the book. =P http://www.dimwood.net/bak_in_win2k.txt <= This should completely solve any problems with running Betrayal on a non-dos Windows system. I'm gonna go re-download a copy now (been ages since I played it), and try the advice on that page. |
