So, Puggsy is like, the greatest game ever, I used to play it daily as a kid on my genesis, writing down passwords until I beat it. I completely forgot about it after awhile, so I'm browsing through some roms and I'm like "oh shit, PUGGSY! =D" I start playing, I get past the first boss, and I get that screen... WHY :'(. Is there a way to bypass that?

Could be severeal reasons why it dosen't work, what emulator are you using? It might be a bad dump that triggers the piracy protection, or there might be a hacked version of the ROM with the piracy protection removed. And it might just not get emulated to 100%, and it causes that error to show... I give it a try myself. :/

Earthbound for NES had a similar thing (where the message appeared kind of 70% in the game even), someone just hacked away the protection.

If my copy of the ROM does the same thing... well, you maybe could try to get a Genesis ROM hacker or something. :3

Edit: Using gens, I get the exactly same error... hmm.

I'm using Gens+, I tried 2 versions of the rom so far. the password to get past the first boss [as far as it'll let you go] is
377 501 370 | 673 776 111 | 750 561 240
If anyone wants to try it on a different emulator

[edit] I found a fix =D. Kega Fusion + disable SRAM = WINAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAy.. etc.

You should all try this game, it's great puzzle/platformer mix.

This is really a nice kind of protection, to be honest.
Aside from that, I also tried the game and it really rocks. I still need to get used to that swinging for gaining height, when carrying an item

I remember Puggsy... awesome game. Used to have it for the Sega CD... Tried to play the extra levels, but a scratch stopped me from playing too far in them, since the game would freeze. Of course, then I found a rom of the Genesis one, and that fixed the problem, and made me happy.

Of course, I was really young at the time... I remember playing the "Never Mined" level and dying repeatedly because I couldn't figure it out. Yeah... It was kinda sad, until I suddenly realized what was going on.

I remember reading about the Puggsy protection... very odd because I'm trying to figure out how it would kick in on an emulator if the game was made in '93. Shades of Earthbound... (as mentioned, a LOT of hacks had to be put in to fix it)

Great effort to block copies, but this is the 21st century after all. Won't work forever.

Is there any difference in the Sega CD version?

Colin: no idea, but at times my tetris attack cart [not rom] gives me a piracy message, I just blow in it and it works again. Also traveller's tales has been known for wizardry in programming games, so it doesn't suprise me much.

I think the CD version mainly just had a few added cutscenes... I don't think it had anything new gameplay-wise. Of course, it's been a while, and I never played through the Genesis one, so I can't say for sure.

You think that's bad? Around '96, my DKC cart started giving me piracy errors (on a blue screen), usually when I tried to play two player team mode (and once, it happened after completing the first level in two player contest). Single player worked flawlessly...but there was one catch. It didn't keep any saved game data for any longer than...say 2 or 3 seconds after I turned the console off. I didn't seem to mind back then, as I got better and faster as I kept playing through (thanks to it, I have all the locations of the bonus rooms memorized).

Any game where you walk through a medival area and fight a parrot with a fish or light a candle through tossing a smaller candle and fight a fox with a plunger is okay by me.

I could never stand the way you got like 5 HP for a boss but were one-hit KO'd anytime else, though. It just seemed so arbitrary.

You always can stock up on sunglasses again, the same goes with this item which doubles your speed and jumping height. Apart from that, they grant you one extra hit each ...
Luckily all levels stay open to be replayed again, thus obtaining these two neat items repeatedly

The awesome power of the white shoes.

Of course, the beer-mug-gun-thing was rather interesting, in a weird sort of way.

Moreover, the extra HP for bosses makes sense, in a way. You're supposed to get through the levels without being hit, but they're going to be a bit more lenient for big things that actively try to kill you like that.

I do that all the time. the sneakers really make some levels 200% easier. I love the phsyics of this game, btw. It's so unique.

Nothing quite like being able to use an empty sunglasses case to climb up ledges.

Actually, the game did have a relatively in-depth physics engine for the time... At least for the pick-uppable objects. Even if the physics was a bit... well... weird. I remember sreriously enjoying chucking objects and watching them fly around the level for a while.

EDIT: I think the CD version had an extra area/boss, now that I've played through the Genesis version. A guy with a big sword that dragged him around the room...

EDIT AGAIN: 3 new bosses, not just one. And a bunch of new music, and a few idiot suggestions ("Pick up", "Use", "Go") in the Beach levels.
