I lost my ipod while I was drunk... so I haven't had as much music to listen to lately.. and honestly... I've been more stressed out. I've actually had this empty feeling in my soul where all my music used to be. Strange I guess.
I believe that you listen to music that reflects your personality. I listen to alot of pop punk.. like blink182, all american rejects, greenday.. my chemical romance.. I dunno songs that make me want to go out and conquer the planet.. because that's the kind of person I am. I'm also very love-oriented.. I guess.. I think about relationships and people alot.. which draws me to alot of emo and love songs... and cheesy old songs from the 60's.. like "god only knows" by the beach boys. Or even songs with a message get me going.. songs that say something... like "imagine" by john lennon.. because I think way way too much. "BOOM!" by system of a down is another good example. Yummy. However.. I cannot listen to techno if my life depended on it. I can deal with some rap.. and that's about it. I don't like these genre's because they don't pry deeper into my life.. and I can't relate to anything these songs are about.. they don't speak to me... on any level. But in clubs.. they are a hellofalotta fun to dance to. |

Music has been a large part of my life for about half of it's existence (existance?) so I should have a decent amount to contribute to this topic. However, as far as music and moods are concerned, everything's been said (angry music amplifies pissed-off moods, et al). I believe it goes somewhat deeper than that though.
I think that over time the music that you listen to dictates what kind of person you are. For example, I used to be way into Tool's music and I think that much of my smart-ass attitude came from that experience. Even though I didn't really get to be a big "wise guy" until quite a bit later on I can't help but think that this came from that time in some subconscious way. Combined with listening to Big Black, Wolf Eyes and other "careless"/generally "fuck all" bands, I think my mindset has changed in recent times. It's sort of hard to explain. Another example: Lots of chicks these days listen to pop music which generally focuses on the topics of falling in love, breaking up and repeating the process. This, I bet, influences their decisions to step "onto the market" at a younger age, and makes them more liable to get pissed over small-time break-ups. Stepping back a little bit... When I'm doing homework or whatever I usually listen to something droney, no matter how quiet or loud it is. The repetition usually keeps me focused on what I need to be doing. When I have friends over I'll usually play something "out there" to see if I can broaden anyone's horizons but it never usually works. Otherwise I just play some old favorites at a soft volume. When I sleep, I listen to something I know and love so that I'm not trying to remember something new and keeping myself awake. It's usually slow stuff (Sunn o))), Jane, Growing, etc.). Yeah. Hmm, yeah. |

I think music affects everyone differently. I listen to music in the rock and metal styles where people are usually angry and screaming. I never really get too agressive and I'm usually a calm person. I never really get any bad thoughts about myself or others when I listen to this music. Even when I listen to the heavier sounds, it's still calming to me.

I find more often that the kind of music I listen to depends largely on my mood. During a rather depressed period of time this past January, I basically compiled a lot of songs that I already had on my computer which together made what I called my "emo playlist" and listened to that...a lot. When I'm a bit happier, I will often listen to funny things as well as the more normal selection of music I have.

I have to agree with Skydude's post. See, I basically listen to old-skool hip-hop. I really am into it but I also listen to jazz, 70's R&B, and some new school rap (basically the songs that are on my ipod). For example, if I'm really ticked off, I probably listen to a rap diss (ex:LL Cool J's Mama Said Knock You Out). Or if I'm in a good mood, I'll probably listen to anything that is basically hyped or has a good beat. (ex: Digital Underground's The Humpty Dance or E-40's Tell Me When to Go).

I listen to a lot of metal and rap (or rap metal). It does make me get very psyched up sometimes. I like it that way.

I guess music can kinda enhance some emotions and stuff, so picking the right kind for the right mood is nice. Although mostly I just mix stuff I like, more mixed than most people I know at that. I can go from some heavy psychedelic to fancy piano tunes to some anime opening to industrial. What I want from it depends on the kind of song etc, but I consider lyrics to be kinda important, as long as I understand them. If there is no lyrics, or I don't understand shit of it (hi French), it all comes down to how it sounds.
