OoC: This is way before most of the other stories that I've had. Schwa and Grey will notice it instantly, but think that this is about 5ish years before what is going on now.

”I’m a tool? Heh, yeah right!”

Star looked out over the hill, so many monsters infested the land. Villages had been reduced to ashes and people had been slaughtered like lambs. Star was still young, a kid, but a man among fighters. He was working with a band of mercenaries this time, he despised them all and he’d never even met them.

He was disturbed right now though and his faith in his country was falling. He’d been the general’s right hand man for a while now, but less than a week ago he was assassinated by a foreigner. Some young girl from NeoTerra actually killed him, Star wouldn’t forget her, the blood stained cloak on her back flying on the wind. She’d glanced at him for a second and muttered the word “Tool” as she escaped.

Star was brought out of his thoughts as the caravan finally met up with him. He turned around with a stern face and anger obviously in his voice.

Star: “About damn time you scum showed up! You know the mission right?”

Star didn’t even let them answer.

Star: “Yeah, figured you guys were illiterate. We’re here to get into the village and look for survivors and only kill monsters that get in our way, if any of you kill a single monster that doesn’t threaten you, the rest will get used to see your head impaled on your caravan.”

???: "I'd be more worried about you harming an innocent, with that kind of attitude."

At the reins of one of the caravan's carriages was a young-looking man with a large duffel bag sitting at his side. He stared down at Star. How rude, not even introducing himself to a band of warriors who might someday save his skin. He climbed off of the carriage, and just stared at Star, waiting for his next command. If that no-good excuse for a fighter wanted to pretend that his employees were dumb, far be it for me to correct him, the man thought. He crossed his arms and stood at the ready.

"So, what'll it be? You're clearly the smart one here..."

Star was furious, he was not used to being questioned.

Star: "Are you trying to mock me? The previous general's right hand man!? I could kill you faster than a frog sticks his tongue to a bug!"

Star didn't even look at the man.

Star: "I guess you really are illiterate, my name was all over that letter. The name's Star, I'm one of the greatest swordsmen on this continent."

Star began to walk down the hill.

Star: "Now, let's~"

Star didn't get to finish his sentence as a huge green dragon leaped up into the air out of the village.

Star: "...hope one of you is a dragon slayer of some sort, I can't afford to waste my time on a dragon."

???: "Star, eh..."

The man watched the dragon fly over them, and calmly jumped down from the reins of his carriage, grabbing his bag and shouldering it.

"Yeah, I've heard of you. I'm Janus. Just Janus. No "greatest swordsman on this continent" or anything fancy like that. I don't slay dragons, either."

He stood his bag upright and sat on it, like a stool. No need to panic.

"But hey, I'm not the greatest swordsman on this continent, now am I?"

Star: "Well Janus, if the greatest swordsman on the continent was here, we wouldn't need to be here now would we."

Star sighed, he was totally convinced that no matter what Janus said, it would be wrong.

Star: "I'm one of the greatest, as in, I can beat any other person on the continent except the greatest. Now, some others might be able to kill dragons, but they just requires brute force, not skill."

Star started to move forward down the hill towards the, now burning, village.

Star: "We should really look for survivors now, split up if you want, but if you mess up, I'm not coming to your rescue."

As Star walked down the hill, someone got out of the wagon.

Hector: "Damn, what a bastard. Doesn't even apologize for making us wait, god."

Hector was talking to Janus as he began to walk down the hill.

Hector: "Well Janus, think there will be treasure this time? If I'm wasting time, I'll get pissed again."

A young man smiled as Star passed him, not noticing the traveller sitting in the shadows. The dark crimson, almost black cloak doesn't really stand out all that much even in a forested setting, he thought. Perhaps one day when he was a bit more confident, he would eschew stealth and go for something a bit brighter red. That was, he mused, more his style. He decided to call out for the swordsman, see if he was worth the traveller's time.

???: You know, skill isn't quite so linear as you make it out to be. Just because A can beat B and B can beat C doesn't mean that A can beat C. If it were that easy we wouldn't have many battles. So I wouldn't get too confident in your position as the "second-best swordsman" if I were you...you could end up being very disappointed some day.
