Super Mario the Crystal Gateway - It's no where near complete so don't think that it is. So far I have edited the title screens, all of yoshi's island (including more levels), the over world and half of donut plains - NOTE: Donut Plains Area 1 is only midly edited and is still pretty much the same level.

I will post the demo in an IPS patch in my next post, cos I need to host it somewhere (probably freewebs)

To do:Edit the Mario Graphics to SMB3 ones - If you can help I have a thread requesting help Here so If you can help please do - I can't stop it from being a distorted mario.
Finish the overworld
Finish the levels
Finish all the sprites

For now here are some screenshots -

http://www.freewebs.com/supermariocg

Have a look and expect the demo (In IPS version) sometime in the next few days!!

PLEASE POST YOUR COMMENTS!!!!

Pre Screenshot Reaction: I like the name of your hack. Has a nice ring to it.

Post Screenshot Reaction: Ouch. You need a lot of work here. OV looks just like the original, but Lunar Magic threw up all over it or something. The level screen isnt so bad, just looks like your custom graphics are just minor pointless changes to what was already there. The titles screen is ok, but whats with all the black in the background?

Instead of getting demos out as soon as possible you should really take some time to work on your hack. It's not really clever to put out a demo in which mostly everything is unfinished/in progress and just a few playable levels and so on. And from what I can see on the screenshots the hack need some work, especially with the overworld. It just looks like a glitched Yoshi's Island-overworld. So I would suggest to stay a bit away rom the "OMG I must release a demo" and use the time to set everything right in the hack. Maybe that will take some time of course, but that shouldn't be the problem...
And after that, it would be a good step for a demo.

Screenshot 1: Did you remove some tiles in the BG? bad idea...>.<
Screenshot 2: . . . The overworld needs to be overhauled ALOT. If your not good at the overworld, ask someone else too, and if they can place thier name in the credits.
Screenshot 3: Nothing too serious, just give those blocks some more time to make them look good, so it doesn't look like you rushed it. If your also not good at graphics, like I said above, ask someone if they can work on some for you.

Well... yeah. This needs some work. The levels are a bit too original and the overworld sort of reminds me of Smallhacker's April Fools day hack missio inbossibul. Look at some of the hacks in the Hack Database, find out how to do things you don't know how to do by looking around the board or contacting a person on the List of people who can help you through IM/PM. Good Luck.

Well 1) The title - I had the Idea of taking the tiles out, and just haven't got round to fixing them.
2) Sorry I chose such rubbish screenshots, I was tired and it was 11:30PM
3)The Overworld needs a lot of work, I already know that.
4)The graphics are not really edited that much but oh well.

To tell ya the truth, screenshots cannot do justice to my rom. I just haven't edited the graphics enough yet.
I like to make some levels, much around with the graphics and THEN fix the graphics completely.

Sorry that the promised hack isn't here yet, I woke up 5 minutes ago.

EDITED AFTERWARDS:
I am uploading the IPS patch right now. It is located on http://www.freewebs.com/supermariocg

I know it needs editing, but thats what it is, a demo tat I have been working on for a month.
Have fun playing it

Just to let you know, try every path, I mucked around with some of the events and paths don't always appear to you, but you can still follow them!

Loads to be fixed, try it!

Secondary Edit:
When you go left at the beggining, as it says "Slip Slip Sloop", press the down button. Mario follows the route around and is at the bottom of the vinestalk(stupid name lol). When you complete it he climbs the vinestalk. This is just to show that problem i stated, about paths not showing up, as you cannot see a highlighted path, just a dark one.

Thanks again.

3rd edit (This is getting stupid lol):
Not all of the levels are complete. I'm up to about the ghost house on donut plains. Everything is still got to be edited in donut plains to make it harder/better.

This just shows how it runs right now. and the format of how some levels will be!

4th Edit:
Sorry for the problem with the patch - I was using that one for development, just re-uploading the proper demo. Sorry fopr the inconvenience!

Take the name of an element or a stone and a type of landscape and combine them to get a pokemonish mario world name. I can guess the screens won't be anything short of average.

Whoa. I just realized that "Crystal Gateway" sounds like a kind of drug... maybe a low-quality meth.

Anyways, comments on the hack:

Opening video: Pretty good, he doesn't die, which is always a bad point in improperly-tested hacks. The main problem is that it's WAY too hard to read the "Mario File" text and selections when about to start your game.

Intro: Pretty good, there's not really much the intro can be rated on, but there were a few small grammar errors. Nothing serious, though.

Overworld: Doesn't make any sense, terrible palettes, overlapped tiles that just... don't really look good in general. also, there're two gray pathways that can be used, which just plain doesn't work out right. Try to fix lots of this before your next demo.

Damaged House: You've got some sort of weird thing going on with unused 16X16 tiles in the middle of this place. You gonna do anything with this? Was this on purpose? Also, a few small background blips I saw, looks like a tile or two were improperly replaced.

Sloop: Nice graphical edits for the ? Block, but what's ES stand for? Or am I just missing something, here? Cute little skis on the Koopas, but their pointed heads just look weird. If it's supposed to be a touque or something, have some way of separating it from their heads. Nice Mario Coin edits, but again, there are a few grammar errors in the speakerbox.

Yellow Palace: Nice idea with the hidden switch, but I'd suggest changing it into either something that blends in with the background or the foreground, making it seem more disguised.

Vine Bottom: Pretty easy, but nice job trying to make it a challenge. The bottom of the background is messed up, though, and the top vine continues moving way too far. You should have something to stop it, meaning "this is the main exit platform thing. Get off here.

Head in the Clouds: z0mg t3h h4rdnezz!1 Seriously, though, it's just a generic "THIS HAX IS DUNN" level. I'm fine with that.

Woosh: VERY BLAND BACKGROUND. Level's not really all that great, but it's bearable. Nice... um... blind? Goombas.

Peasy Land: Same deal with the unused 16X16 tile deal used as a platform at the beginning. Nice edits of: Box-football thing, ball-Thwimp thing, and the 4-item-switching-box thing without the box, but it didn't really make much sense.

Mountains: Major flaw next to the pipe at a tall point, there the land goes vertical, then back to a slope. The GFX for the vertical part are messed up, and there's a small hole where you can get through, fall through the level, and die.

Ice Palace: Not too much bad here, nice little red-edit of the grinder thing, but after you beat him, there're some major graphical glitches regarding the egg you saved and his "THANK YOU!" message thing.

After that, some of the levels are barely changed at ALL, so I won't go out of my way to make comments on them all, mainly just more of the same problems.

Overall, it's a pretty good hack, but it has a few major bugs you should work out, and the overworld really needs more editing.

um.... dude it's really needing some work...

1st: the koopa sprites don't look good with the skis
2nd: your respriting on the custom blocks kind of look sloppy
3rd: Levels are way too short
4th: not enough obstacles, I found myself running through levels
5th: the OW is not very good at all, it looks sloppy
6th: the "yoshi House" level needs to look like a house was there, not "whatever"

But don't get your hopes down, this could be a very good hack if you put some time into it, and I absolutly looove you idea and storyline, just make it a little more difficult, and cleaner. Please make some of your blocks look better.

I'm positive they were there before. Perhaps they were taken down for some reason that is beyond me at the moment.

That... Makes SO little sense. It's not like Freewebs hates that sort of thing. The only possible reason I can think of is that he took them down intentionally...

Thank you for all the comments

First off, the screenshots were taken down, as the first 6 replies were not really good ones. I did realise that, so they were taken off.

Secondly, The opening intro was just a bit of a test, and is to be completely redone.
Then the selections in dark - This was an entire accident, this WILL be changed.

The OW right now is simply a place to define for myself where all the levels are currently. The OW will be completely changed.

ES stands for 'Elemental Software'. At the top of the vine, you can see that the coins spell out "(c) ES 2006" and instead of Nintendo Presents it says 'ES Presents', to be changed into 'ES GIVES YOU'

Thanks Mike for pointing out the yellow switch in the switch palace needs to be more disguised, it will be. I didn't think of that.

The goomba graphics are wearing sunglasses. That is v1 of the goombas. They are not blind.( although perhaps they should be... They fall off ledges all the time)

The koopas have ski's to try and fit in with the ice and snow from the game. The pointed thing on the back is a graphical error, as I was editing it at about 11 o'clock, and hadn't had much sleep for ages.

Woosh does need a new background, but i havent time right now. Will be done latyer this week.

In the mountains, I didn't realise that there was a gap sorry. Whoever has tested it in my family have been killed by the blue koopa or the goomba just after it. I really didn't know it was there, so I'll have to sort that out. Thanks.

So far I have been more about editing levels before graphics. I am continuing to edit them later today.

Yoshis house is just there fopr now, like I said to tell me where each level has moved to.I am planning to take this out of the game.

All the levels are gunna be filled up even more with enemies and obstacled.

The blocks are just for now, and are to be fixed up and made flashy with new palletes.

The little 'GLITCH' after beating iggy is meant to be a crystal shard. It honestly looked brilliant in TLP, but looks rubbish in the hack. Will have to edit.

Thanks to everyone who has posted. The comments will hopefully help me to make the hack much more worthwhile your time. Expect the next demo sometime next month, complete with loads more levels.

I will keep the first demo online for you all to test if you havent done so already, but that demo is already outdated 2 days after being uploaded...

Thanks Again

Keep the comments coming!

I'm very sorry to announce that the release of the crystal gateway is even further away. I am staying off smw editing for 2 weeks from now, as I really need to cram before my exams next week. This thread is now discontinued by me, and a new thread entitled 'SMW - The Crystal Gateway, Yet Further' will be posted in a couple of weeks. Bye

See you in 2 weeks!!
