July 11, 2006. This day is the last day Microsoft will be updating and supporting Windows 98, Windows 98SE and Windows ME.

For me, this is a time of mourning. I've had Windows 98SE since 2000, and yes it has been horrible (BSOD's, particularily), but I've used it for so long I can't stand the feel of Windows XP. It makes me feel so out of control of my PC's function, whereas I could fix practically anything I wanted to fix myself with 98.

On that day, the little computer status light will flicker for just a second, as the plug is forever pulled on Microsoft technical support, security updates and critical patches for these operating systems.

About time. Windows 9x is even worse off than what they did to Windows 2000.

I still use Win9x, but never needed tech support from Microsoft...
Getting tech support from Microsoft is like asking Intel to help AMD

Yep. I've known about this for a while.

Truth be told, it doesn't really affect me all that much. I don't have to support any of those operating systems in my work (which is the only place it would worry me) and at home, I'm perfectly capable of administering and managing my Windows 98SE old-games computer without Microsoft's help, patches, etc. It never gets connected to the internet anyways.

It will probably have a bigger impact in places with low budgets who have not been able to upgrade their machines still...

Wasn't the support planned to be discontinued much earlier but Microsoft changed their mind due to alot of customers still using it?

Meh, the programs who I hadn't got to run on Windows 2000 or later are all DOS programs, and there's dosbox , though it's rather slow on some computers... I had some problems getting orginal CnC to work, but there was patchers for that.

Good riddance.

I had both 98 and ME, hated them to death. My dad got a computer right when XP came out, and I immediately got attached to it. Thank the lord I have it on my computer.

ME, man I hated that. What a bitch.

I can't say that this directly affects me at all, and given that, I'm neither sad nor happy about it. We did have a computer with Windows 98 installed, but it somehow became unusable (it wouldn't boot, I couldn't format the hard drive (it'd get to 12% complete and crash), reinstalling Windows did nothing, and the hard drive was only accessible via a DOS prompt), so my Dad, figuring that we wouldn't need the Windows 98 CD anymore (seeing as we were getting a new computer) gave it away to someone he knew.

Since then, I've used XP, and I have to say I'm quite happy with it. There are a few quirks that sometimes get on my nerves, but other than that, it does exactly what I want it to, so I can't complain Even with Microsoft not supporting it anymore, I can see there being at least half a chance that unofficial updates / fixes will be released for future problems. Just because the main guy behind something sets it aside permanently doesn't mean the whole world does as well

Overall though, I have used 98 in the past, and while it worked for what I wanted it to do (for the most part), I'd much prefer XP at present.
