I've had 2 hard drives die on me since I started SMW hacking. My mom thinks SMW hacking killed them both, so she wants me to stop. R. Solaris said he had a hard drive die on him while he was working on a hack too. Has SMW hacking cost anyone else their hard drives?

Please don't flame me.

*Lunar Magic, Websites and USB disks vs. [my] hard drive

Fixed. Basically, I have up-to-date backups of my hack stored in many different places. So no worries about losing stuff there. Oh, and SMW hacking isn't responsible for killing the hard drive. It is common to see ROM Hackers in general have their hard drives die on them, but besides that, the two are completely unrelated. It's probably crappy AMD hardware more than anything that causes it.

You probably just have crappy hard drives, if Lunar Magic had an evil kill function, it'd probably be known by now. Also, no software that I know of can destroy hardware, only data.

Well, Lunar Magic does tend to slow down my PC's clock, and it locks up hard if I drag a floating window too fast...but I can't say it's ever eaten a hard drive before.

Maybe if LM were constantly writing to some file it could mess up the disk, but I don't think it does anything like that.

No, Lunar Magic did not kill your hard drive.

If this were a thread where you didn't include that flame disclaimer (disflamer, if you will), I'd say something about how incredibly dense it was of you to jump to the conclusion that a piece of software used and hacked by a bunch of people rather knowledgeable about computer programming destroyed a piece of hardware.

But you put in this nice disclaimer, so I won't put that.

I had several harddrives die from using NOCASH gameboy emulator back when I used to hack gameboy roms. I think it had memory leaks and that caused Windows 98 to act up though.

Lunar Magic wasn't the source for my Hard drive's sudden Death. The cause of mine was Rotor damage caused by a shot to the ground it made when I was using it in the External Comp bridge I made. Though it still works slightly I can't read anything from it which really sucks. I don't know for sure but I highly doubt Lunar Magic would cause a hard drive to die.

Yes, No$GMB's debugger has horrible memory leaks. Windows 98 sucks at memory management, so it's possible the huge demand for memory combined with bad virtual memory management could have stressed the disk.

Or maybe he just had crappy hard disks, or some other hardware problem (like overheating)?

It makes me laugh when people make absurd claims like this. Hard drives are designed for constant read/write access, and I highly doubt any amount of Windows page-file thrashing would be enough to kill a drive, unless you left it running like that for months at a time.

Constantly seeking back and forth, spinning up and down etc will wear out the motors faster though.
