For me, the best block is the one of the left.

Super job on the ''Coins'' there Icegoom. But it will not look right unless
this ''Coin hack'' is done, There is 2 seprate mappings of coins, One for

*Multi-Coin blocks.

All right, gave the old one a transparent background:

I like the newer one better, but it looks a little wrong when it's near other blocks. I think it's because it has a black outline on top, so I need to add one to the older blocks, too.

If you want to make Iggy green, his tile attributes (palette, tileset, flip, etc.) are located in the range 1D42E-1D49C. Just change the lower digit of each byte that ends in 5 to B, while leaving the higher one as it was. The tile attributes for his decoys are at 1D4A0-1D4B4.

For Wendy, you can either choose to leave her red (as in SMB3), or change her to pink (her official artwork). Her attributes are at 1D4B8-1D526. Each low digit of 9 here can be replaced with F. This pink palette is palette F of Sprite Palette 1. Wendy's decoys' attributes are at 1D52A-1D53E.

Thanks a lot! You're so helpful. Lemmy and Wendy:

To clarify, when I say "rolling coin," I refer to the coins to the coins that roll in front of you after you shoot an enemy with a fireball, which as far as I know are exactly the same as the coins that pop out of blocks but are different from normal coins floating in the sky. They already look fine in-game to me, but I can try that out and see if it changes anything.

You're welcome. I love those Koopaling sprites!

A few things I have to say about them is that the pink part of Wendy's head should be the same color as her body--the orange color, and something seems odd about their side poses, like they have long necks. Also, I think that Baby Mario's shoes could be light blue instead of red.

Keep up the great work!

Personally, I prefer the older one, the one on the right, as it seems to match the style of everything else you have created. Unless you decide to give everything else a thicker black outline, all the blocks will look slightly odd.

Absolutely beautiful work on all the sprites. I look forward to playing this when it is complete.

Also, I know you're having problems giving Mario a proper fire-mario-set palette, but I'm wondering if it's possible having a seperate spriteset for it (well, anything is theoretically possible with ASM, it's just doing it :P), as whilst it may be a pain to do it'd most certainly look brilliant. Something like..

.. but only if you're trying to achieve perfection. :P

If not for the fact that I've pretty much given up SMW hacking, I'd definately request those sprites. Your Yoshi sprite rocks. I never did like the fact that the SMW Yoshies have orange arms (Only ORANGE Yoshies should have orange arms).

Yeah, I noticed Wendy's head was the same color as her body in the official artwork, but I thought it looked better pink. The neck is too long, but her head was going to look disconnected from her body unless I lengthened it. I could make the rim of her shell stretch out further, but if I did that, it'd overlap her face when she turns to face the camera and look wonky.

I've just added similar black outlines to the other blocks. It'd be nice to have the correct colors for Fire Mario, but I can't do ASM yet.

Yeah, Nintendo made some really baffling choices on their original sprites. This was the first time they'd done 16 bit graphics, so I guess weird miscolorings are justified. Still, they should have fixed stuff up for their re-releases.

I guess this is your lucky night, then. Instead of posting more spritesheets or screenshots, I'm putting out a demo. I finished up the last of the Chuck sprites today, so it feels like time.

Truthfully, I'm starting to get sort of burnt out working on this and I'm itching to work on some other projects. Don't get me wrong, I will finish this completely eventually, but I need to step back for a little while and recharge before I finish up the rest of the foreground and background stuff. I can still make little changes based off of feedback, but I'm tired of doing stuff from scratch right now.

Here's the link. (I hope it works for all of you)

If you've got an old Super Mario World save file, you should be able to load it up and go explore any level you want. Run around, stomp things, explore every corner, and let me know how stuff looks in action. You can start using these graphics in your own hacks if you don't mind the incomplete state.

I am aware that Vanilla Dome and Valley of Bowser look ugly. I couldn't get the palettes to work right the way I've redrawn the overworld tiles, and I'm just sick of messing with it. If someone wants to try a hand at making everything look right, be my guest.

First time I reply to this thread... Yay.

Overall, your graphics look quite good and all... However, as far as Mario is concerned, I wouldn't have made him totally on the side like you did, but would have made him turned more toward the camera (just like your winged koopa in this screen)... Not only do I think that would make him look better, but he also kinda looks like a robot as of now.

However, I don't expect you to follow my advices... It would take time and motivation to remake your Mario, add to that the fact you just said you wanted to step back for some time...

My Brother SSM picked up that copy before I left and looked at his computer. The best designe you ever made. He might want to use some of your GFX.

And something's bothering me. The hack only work for ZSNES142 while the ZSNES129 does not. Checked and checked and nothing work. Or it must have been the SRAM file or something. Still dunno.

...What?

This is unbelievable! Excellent work.

But there are a few things you might want to consider changing:

1. The koopa troopas don't move enough in their animation. Like the two frames are really similar.
2. The jumping and falling frames don't match at all.
3. Mario's feet while climbing look kind of strange.
4. Some sprites have a black outline, which doesn't fit in very well.
5. Fire Mario's Palette looks rather odd. I'd like to see SMB3-style colours for that; red and orange, and white and cream.
6. Mario's palette isn't great either. I know it's the SMW palette, but I never liked it anyway. I'd rather see a sharper red, and a darker, more colourful blue.

That's just about all I have. Everything else is amazing!

BTW, when are you gonna do the backgrounds? Are you gonna make new ones or are you just gonna redraw the GFX?

Heh. This time, Mario is a modified original Nintendo sprite, since I figured any sprite I drew from scratch wouldn't be as good as what professional artists had done. I kept the view they used, but there is a three quarters view I could work with if I get an inkling to:

If I had any idea what the difference between those two ZSNESes was or what a SRAM file was, I might be able to do something about that. Excuse my ignorance.

Yeah, Yoshi was kind of hard to animate. Maybe I can fix him later.

OK, here's a new palette for Mario:

I can't change Fire Mario's palette too much because of the way I've used the colors. His pants color is used in his eyes and to outline his gloves, so it needs to remain bluish. And his shirt color is used somewhat to shade his skin, so it needs to remain reddish.

I could maybe move Koopa Troopa's arms a bit more, but I think his legs move quite a bit. Mario climbing does look wrong, and I'll probably rework it. I'm not sure what you mean about the jumping and falling frames not matching up, though.

I've updated the patch with new the new Mario palette, a new palette for coins and blocks, and for the Overworld after you pass Special World. (I'd completely forgotten to do that before...)

I like how you give Fire Luigi Waluigi-type colors.

And I really hope someone modifies Iggy and Larry so that they have individual hairstyles. (Mattrizzle said he tried changing the tile mappings, but while Iggy does have the correct hair, Larry has Iggy's hair.)

Mario's cape when he flies looks nice. Hope you redraw the sprites of the cape itself soon.
