Meh, the phone company won't totally sue his ass off for real though. I doubt anyone does that on purpose.
Which makes me wonder where the calls were too, and for how long. Most providers keep track on where you called and for long for billing reasons, and for making it possible for the consumer to see if there's been any abuse. Then this is in Malaysia, so what's norm here might not be there... |

Jesus Sacred Christ! That has got to be a mistake of some sort.
According to the story, the guy disconnected the phone in January and settled the $23 bill...or so he thought. If someone had inadvertantly called Mars on his behalf and left the phone off the hook right up until today, I still don't see how it could possibly add up to 218 trillion dollars. Bullshit. That's some kind of mistake. (edited by Kirk Bradford Myers on 04-12-06 05:12 AM) |

I love how you said worst, not worse. Really puts things in perspective.
This is the most ridiculously flawed bill ever. I love it. |

I have to say I don't believe that at all. Sounds like a big mistake, and someone exaggerating it.
I mean, seriously. How do you get a bill like that? Is it even possible? |

Big computer glitch I guess?
This reminds me of the reports that someone who rented a movie in 1999 and returned it in 2000 got a 100-year late fee. |

Does 218 trillion dollars even exist in the economy? | |||

The very very bottom of the tier (i.e, people who die at birth, are born only to be stabbed in the face, etc.) are probably even, and if they were alive to say something, they'd probably be humble enough to say someone had it worse than them. So it reflects on the people who have it better, but by such in infentasmally small amount it doesn't matter.

I never really understood why long distance costs more than... short distance. Or why phone services costs so much at all. As far as I can see, the only costs they have are to pay their employees, and just maintain the system they have working. I mean it's not like it costs any physical labor for an electrical charge to move from point A to point B... it's just maintenance... making sure the phone lines don't all fall down and whatnot.
So all phonebills really cost too much. I don't understand how someone could ring up 218 trillion dollars worth of long distance charges though... that's pretty ridiculous. |

Well, one of the reasons long-distance calls cost more is that you're often dealing with another phone company. It would be horribly inefficient for every phone company to run wires all around the country, so generally, there's just a few sets. If you're calling long-distance, your call may go through a set of telephone lines not owned by the particular phone company operating in your area...and they need to pay a premium to use the lines of other companies.
...or something like that. But yeah, mostly it's because they want to make money. |

Yeah, it's only expensive because it can be. It's like $4.50 a minute to call the US from here, and it's not exactly that far away. Fortunately I have very little reason to do so. |
