The guy who owns the shop I work at is very religious, not religious enough to keep him from cursing at machines when they don't act right, but religious enough to print a bunch flyers from a religious website and hand them out to all his employees (well, by bunch I mean, like ten).
Anyway, appartently he doesn't have his computer set to add the URL of the page he's printing to the top of each sheet, so I'll have to give the basic gist. It was saying that in 2008 the government will start issuing national ID cards that, because you can't get a job or have a bank account without it, will be nessicary for all buying and selling, and therefor, its the mark of the beast.
I actually heard about this ID a while ago, but never really thought about it being a sign of the Apocalypse, more just a sign of a serious flaw in our law making process where one bill can effect multiple sections of US code.
There seems to be multiple flaws in this logic though, first of all, I'm pretty sure the mark is supposed to go on the hand or forehead, not in your wallet. Also, my understanding is that the Apocalypse is supposed to be a worldwide event, this is just a US law. Beside, the flyer was telling people to contact congressmen a not vote for people not interested in repealing the law, but if this really is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, I don't this there's a whole lot we can do about it. I don't remember anywhere in Revelation where it says, "unless you contact your local representative".
But besides just the whole return of Jesus thing, how do you feel about the National ID card? Is it just another step toward totalitarianism, or just more clutter in your wallet?

Sounds like an annoyance. I already have a social security number, a driver's license, and a birth certificate. I have dental records, injection records, and a bunch of other stuff they can use to find out that I'm from this country anyways, why do they need more?

Reminds me about this I read once... (warning, christian propganda)

I wouldn't call it the mark of beast, as it seems to be a internatioal thing. And while I think totalitarian goverment is a bad thing, I still think it's little too far thinking it's a sign of the Apocalypse.

I believe in the "end times" personally, but the first thing I'm going to say is that man you work for, can not be christian if he's cussing and swearing, but he's actually more of a hypocrite, and he's extremely foolish if he's claimng to be a christian, and not acting like it. I am a christian, and I don't swear, but anyway back on subject. The way I believe it's not going to be on a card, your understanding was correct about the mark being on the hand and forehead; and until then issuing new ID cards is no more than plastic. I just want to let you guys know from a christian perspective, that if you guys hear from the government ever, that they will start putting microchips, or whatever it may be on your hand and forehead or in it, make sure you do not guys, even if you have to be an outlaw to the city. If even I were an atheist, I still hate this government, and I would never trust them to ever... I mean EVER, put anything extreme such as an electronical device or chip. That is my christian persective on it guys.

Sounds like another rumor. Lots of those floating around... Wait... something you need in order to get a job or bank account... like your social security number? Typically don't need that card on you at all times, but you need the information from it... how would this be much of a change?

Skyon: There's no point in putting microchips in your head or hands. It's just a stupid, stupid idea, even without the whole christian thing going on. Much more practical to throw them in your arm, where it won't HURT LIKE HELL TO LIVE AFTERWARDS.

Skyon, let me get this straight. You CAN NOT AT ALL BE CHRISTIAN if you swear? You do understand that the bible was not written in English, and swearing is a man made sin, and not really a big deal in Europe?

Next thing you know, you'll say "You can't be christian if you have long hair". Like Jesus.

edit: And to remain relevant, Real ID as this is called was tagged onto some bill to give the troops more money. These guys need proper body armor and such, so I'm glad it passed, but the Real ID thing is just dumb.

Another NationalID = # of beast debate AGAIN?

The whole 666 thing was supposed to be a play on words. In the writing style of the time, the number 666 could be formed by Emperor Nero's name. It's no coincidence.

As far as the "I have 50 documents, what do I need an ID for?" question. Presumably you would only need that one ID instead of the however many documents. I would like nothing more then to only have to remember 1 number instead of like 20 like now.

Oh, so it's simplifing everything so you don't have to have 20 numbers, that sounds pretty good then. If it has to be implanted in my body though, fuck that. Needles are the only thing going into me...

Presumably it would be in card form. Though if they had like implantible RFID thing as like an extra option, I would so get that. That would be so awesomely convinent.

Imagine being able to like, just have it like in your hand, and you just put your hand up to a panel to pay for stuff. That would rule.

It would, however, the security implications would ruin it.

Yea I know. It kinda sucks. The problem with RFID tracking is that anyone with a $10 scanner can copy an RFID tag making the whole thing insecure. I don't actually know how you would securing a system like that. Nothing really comes to mind.

Well. I could imagine one soloution. Just make the punishment for identity theft be so extreme that nobody in their right mind would even attempt it.

If there is ever an implanted chip, here is my take on how we'll get to it..
First, there will be a law passed saying we need to put tracking chips into sex offenders to keep track of them. No one will oppose this because most people think sex offenders are worse than animals. During this time the technology will be perfected on them. Maybe there will be a court case challenging whether or not its constitutional to make someone, even a sex offender, have an implant. The sex offenders will lose the case, because even if its wrong people will act on their raw emotional response when some isolated nutcase rapes/murders some little kid and "the implant would have prevented this!". But now a precedent has been set that its acceptable to make some people have implants. Next maybe the implants get extended to "guest workers" as they are seen as potential terrorists, and anyone with a criminal record. Implant making-companies become rich and a lobby group. Now a huge number of people are being forced to have implants, they make a big issue about discrimination. To "solve" the problem the government simply makes everyone get an implant so its fair.

I think you can surround an RFID chip with tin foil to stop it from reacting to transmission. That is a problem though, people could let other people copy them.

this kinda reminds me, the first four letters/numbers of my ID card are D666... My mom is kinda supersticious, and she asked me to get a new one, it was funny.

Well, the US DoT did renumber US Route 666, and everyone kept stealing its signs...

These IDs are a very good idea, they will help keep track of criminals, terrorists, etc. They will also help keep track of people. The US government already issues IDs for naturalized citizens such as myself, they should extend the system to born citizens.
