Its because you can constantly see Lara's assets.

That's the only reason why she's so popular.

If there ever was 3D metroid game where samus wore nothing but her jumpsuit, i can guarantee her popularity would skyrocket.

Not to mention, it would also be pretty fucking hot.

Also, there are still many people I know who are surprised to find out that Samus is a girl...I would love to think the entire world isn't this ignorant, but, her lack of recognition as a heroin could be attributed to the fact that many people don't know her gender. In fact, one person I know even went so far as to insist any reference of "she" was a typo .-.;; go figure.

"Lara Croft, the world's favourite digital heroine, has been awarded a Guinness World Record as the 'Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine'."

Wait, has Lara Croft almost make it off of a spacestation about to explode and safely landed on a hostile planet only to end up fighting creatures ten sizes bigger than her?

Oh wait, I don't think Lara has ever even stepped off of Earth...

Samus kicks more ass than Lara and knows to keep her mouth shut at all times. The Metroid games are better that Tomb Raider also. So what if Lara has a tight shirt and short shorts? Samus has a fucking blaster and can morph into a ball! THAT makes her awesome. Not how many breast jobs she has had done to make her look more realistic! Also, Lara Croft just looks... ill...

And I can't help but think of The Decline of Video Games 2 at this moment...

I agree with everything this man said, on account of it being 100% fact. Lara (and in turn, Tomb Raider) is probably only more popular because of her...you know. All people seem to care about is their pixelated breasts, which I'm not surprised about (seeing as how probably half of them don't get any). In fact, I've suspected for a long time that FF7 has a similar situation with Tifa. I mean, god. Breasts are good, but when it comes to video games, they are relatively meaningless to sensible people.

But you can't argue with numbers people. Lara is better than Samus when it comes to statistics, even if they're arguably flawed. It's the wonder of opinion wars on the internet.

Samus has guns. Lara has guns and boobs. As far as your average horny teenager is concerned, Lara wins.

Plus Lara's in the gaming Hall of Fame while Samus isn't.

To be fair, the Lara Croft character itself is an important part of gaming history... but not without several drawbacks. Specifically, a huge bunch of above-average to crappy games which only NOW (you know, after they almost killed the franchise) seems to be turning around.

There were only two good tomb raider games anyway. Metroid has been a series of awesome games. Freaking pervs.

No one said the Tomb Raider games were better. No one here, anyway. But you cannot say Samus is a more accomplished figure than Lara.

...The first two, or the first one + Legend? (Because Legend HAS gotten good reviews. Not mind-blowing ones, but the general consensus is that it's a decent game and saves the franchise.)

I actually enjoyed Tomb Raider 2 (admittedly the only game in the series I've ever played...), but, it is a league of its own, not comparable to the Metroid series in any way. Though Metroid has made a big impact on gaming, the character of Samus is much less known than Lara Croft. Her publicity was also increased by the Tomb Raider movie for sure, and as for Metroid ever hitting the silve screen, we've all yet to see. (And I know one was announced, but, what ever became of that?)

Slightly off-topic, but Tifa actually was a better heroine than Aeris. She was stronger, more emotional, played a bigger role in the story, got the guy...

Anyway, Samus doesn't really have as much personality as Lara does. Granted, Lara's personality is shallow, unrefined, and only barely existant, but Samus Aran (much like many Nintendo characters, I've seen) has emotions and thoughts that are largely based on the player's feelings about the game. You take on her role more than you do Lara. It's the same way with Mario, or Link, or Donkey Kong, or a lot of the mascot characters. They all stick to a basic single character trait, or sometimes no personality at all. There's no interaction. Mario likes ravioli. Okay, but that doesn't define how he'd react to losing his job.

:\ That doesn't stop her from kicking ass, though...

Samus > Lara Croft...
Hotness definately for the win.

She's practically like Lara Croft except she wears armor, has blonde hair and weilds futuristic guns. Clearly a better chracter.

Lara Croft is just materialistic (by loose definition because she's still somewhat hot). Seriously though, what kind of wanker likes a materialistic woman though? Not me.

Not to mention, Lara has that saucy British accent......
But Samus Rules above all. That's the reason I bought Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
