those aren't fair representations of religion
there was a time when science and religion both agreed on a lot of things that were wrong. Like the earth was the center of the universe. and those sorts of things don't happen much anymore. Sure there are faith healers that supposedly can heal people on the spot (for some money of course). Not all that convincing to me Religion is faith in a God that knows all and science is here to discover what God already knows. They go hand in hand in my opinion. Of course they don't always seem to agree based on our current level of knowledge but our picture of the universe could change yet again when we learn new things about it. It's happened before and it will probably continue to happen. |

You know what? You know what? Why can't we just say, "You're a Christian. If you're a good Christian, you're going to heaven. You're a Muslim. If you're a good Muslim, you're going to get 70-some odd virgins when you die. You're Pagan. If you're a good Pagan, you'll die and go the Summerlands." Why can't we just say, whatever you believe in will happen when you die?

Because your statement on Islam is unlearned. As is your concept of paganism. There are many realms for the many pagan peoples. To group them as one is extremely arrogant.
Well, spel wordz rite, I suppose the secularist regime of the French Revolution must've been a terrible thing. They did much the same thing that religions did. Suffice to say that your example is simply inaccurate. Late Antiquity and Mediaeval Catholic tradition did little to halt medicine as you stipulate. Many of the most important scientific and medical discoveries of mankind were made in the monastaries of Europe. Which, guess what, were of religious inclinations. In fact, had it not been for the Catholic Church and the drive of Christians to learn during the Middle Ages (particularly in Ireland) the entire Latin education method would've been lost and the perceived "dark age" of the Germanic migrations during the death throes of Rome would've lasted far longer (mind you, there is also the dark age of the 900-1100s spurred on by a whole different factor, the Vikings, whom were also migrating due to a population explosion). |

I feel like quoting from angels and demons: "Science is just trying to understand what religion knows." If you think about science doesn't mean to go against eligion. All it does is try to understand the world.

I believe that neither one nor the other can fully explain the universe, or our perception of it.
science is easy to decribe, by its very nature something codified and explained. Faith is like a stairway that is invisible to everyone but the person climbing it. It holds you up, and defies other persons definitions as to why or how. You know it works, cause your on it, and its obviously holding you up. Every faith is different. (this is faith, not beliefs I am talking about). Science talks about laws, or established rules and paths of behavior that apply to our surroundings. Faith seeks neither to explore nor explain our surroundings. It is a certainty without facts. Its cool stuff. |

The bible is a book of metaphors. You use it to live your life as a good person, and that's where it should end. People thousands of years ago who wrote it still thought that flies spontaneously generated from dead meat. The old testament is stating the belief in one true god, over and over.. and that he is magnificant and can do many great things. The new testament in the story of jesus's life, and how he wants us to live our lives.
Nothing scientific about anything can be taken from the bible. Beliefs can. I'm not christian, and I have a wide spread concrete set of beliefs about the afterlife. In no way am I saying that it is silly to believe what's in the bible, because it's not. All religions are different paths to the same ending. And we all think we know the ending, but we don't. Life is a cliffhanger. As for science, it's another way of explaining what goes on around us. The only difference is that they have reasearched long and hard and drew conclusions from it. They have even revoked theories when they were proven wrong! The bible can't prove itself wrong, it can't evolve, think, breathe or be changed. I'm not saying that it wasn't changed in the middle ages to justify everything, but now it can't be changed. It's like set in stone, and not going anywhere. Science evolves and corrects itself, religion does not. And it's impossible for them to go against each other because they examine different realms. Religion examines the spiritual realm.. and science examines the secular one. (edited by Snow Tomato on 12-31-05 02:29 PM) |

Science goes against religion because science is based upon fact. And in most religions there is no fact that something happend(such as the rise of jesus). Religion is orbited around belief which is something that science realy doesnt believe in.

They examine two different realms. Religion examines beliefs and science examines facts. It's impossible for them to contradict, which is why I don't know why so many religious people get mad at scientists.
It all comes down to accepting another possibility. Believe it or not, people from 500 A.D. might have been wrong about evolution. I know, it's shocking. But science can never prove or disprove god. So, I don't really see the issue. If you're religious, and you believe in the core of the doctrine.. then you should be accepting and open to new ideas. Or at least that's what I was taught in religion school... but from what I've seen.. it's not applied all that well. |

science is based on fact and religion on faith, right?
GOD or someone or something in this solar system gave us a brain . In that brain was logic it shaped us from neanderthals to modern man. But what made the change an act of god or an act of mother nature ? This is where all the fighting starts. natural selection where is the hole in that on either side of the arguement ,isnt that what evolution is based on anyways, the weak die and the strong live thats it the bottom line, the member of a species with the traits most suited for their environment live and those without the best adaptation die.it happens everyday evolution that is, just in small forms.Over a long period of time these traits build up to show a noticeable change to the genome of a species which may lead to a whole new species. To deny evolution would be to deny the inheritance of traits. The major argument the christians/catholics is that there is no crediable transitional species documented or at least not to my knowledge. what about bacteria they evolve all the time they evolve immunities to drugs we use to kill them right?
