I don't know if the question has been asked before, but...

I've noticed that you can't, but what would happen if I somehow managed to get a regular/color game into a DS? Would it play?

No, becuse...

GBA and GB games uses a diffrent voltages, the DS wouldn't change voltage. Orginal GB is 5v I think, GBA is 3v. GBA have some switch inside that is pressed down when you insert a GB cart.

Even if you made it read the GB cart somehow the ARM processor dosen't understand the machine code language from your GB cart. It probably wouldn't even try to understand it, as the GB ROM wouldn't have the correct GBA header anyway.

So it's like trying to get a DVD cd to work with a old CD player. You just can'.

(I forgot what processor the orginal GB had... )

I read something about the processor (Z80?) wasn't "all there" enough to work with the older games. If at all

You're thinking Z80, Ailure. The DS dosn't contain a Z80 processor, which the Gameboys all used. The funny thing though, is that it still contains the Gameboy's APU, as it is also used by the Gameboy Advance hardware.

... I don't much see how that's funny. Funny would be if it was there and served no purpose whatsoever.

Edit: Like an appendix.

Well not funny in the ha ha way, funny in the useless bit of info. way. You know, because even though the DS can't run GB games, it still requires a part of the GB hardware to still run GBA games. Like a little bit of it lives on .-.;;

Only way to get a GB game to run on the DS would likely be through emulation. Dunno if emulators are already out which serve that purpose, but it's the only logical way.

As I recall, devices like the M3 allow you to load up third party (not included with M3) emulators like Pocket NES and I've heard you can load gameboy emulators onto it too. Though it's probably not called Pocket Gameboy b/c that would be redundant...

There's GB emulators for GBA, so you can just use one of thoose emulators and use it on a DS.

GBA flashcarts tend to be bigger than GB/C ones (I've never actually heard of a GB/C one, so...), so you can just throw the roms on a flashcart and play a bunch at a time. Seems like the reason to me, at least.

That, and playing them on a DS.

The reason they didn;t make it any further backwards capatible is because:
It would take more effort to do that and the DS would have less features.

And it'd be bigger and more expensive.

It exists for three reasons:
1) Author was bored.
2) Can put GB ROMs on GBA flash carts, thus not having to carry GBC carts. (GBC flash carts are really hard to find.)
3) GB Micro has no GBC compatibility.

Anyway not only is there a voltage difference, the cartridges are also wired differently. While GBC carts have 8 (out of 32) pins on the connector devoted to data, and 16 devoted to address, GBA uses the same pins for both (since it needs 24 for address), which would confuse the GBC carts.

There were rumors back about a simple mod you could do to your ds that would allow you to play gameboy games on it. I don't spose anyone knows if that was for real do they? From the talk here it sounds like it couldn't be.

First off, that's a month-long bump.

Second, that mod was fake. It was soldering an unused lead into a ground, if I'm not mistaken.

Nice, a bump. Thanks for giving me something to do *ker-close* don't do that again, oklie doklie?

Also, the mod would have to be fake unless it involved added a Z80 processor to the motherboard _¬
