Heh... heh... oops... I thought it was referring to a region, not a condition... Still doesn't apply to me, but it does have a different connotation... And also makes the joke seem slightly less callous, if you assume he had no idea it was actually applying to something like that.

Nah Modern Psychologists label disorders "Autism" when they know vaguely what it does but haven't a clue what it is, sort of like saying you have a stomach bug when it could be a multitude of things with the same symptoms.
BTW I should know what I'm talking about here, as I've worked with young people who have Mild to servere learning difficulties and aspergers. (edited by Uncle Elmo on 04-02-06 07:20 AM) |

I once read an article about Asperger's Syndrome and thought it could easily describe me. But seeing as there is nothing to do about it i saw no point in pursueing it further.

Is not autism clasically thought to be primarily impairment of the brain's communication/social interaction capacities?
I know I've read studies that people with autism tend to have much smaller amounts of white mass and proportionally more grey mass in their brains. (White mass being signal carrying, grey mass being primarily processing). Of course, the same study also noted that people with unusually large amounts of white mass tended to also be really good liars (lying being a fairly advanced communications technique). |

So where exactly is the line between personality and syndrome?

Originally posted by emcee Good question indeed, I don't dare to say anything about if there's a such line or not as i'm not a psychiatrist. Even of psychology intrests me a bit. You have to remember though, that people with the exactly same syndrome can still differ alot. :p God, I remember outright offending other people when I was younger, without even realizing it. So yes, I had my hurdles with Aspberger but as older I get, the less problems I have with them. And apart from me being quite excentric, I fit quite well into a normal society nowdays. And the relationships between Autism<->Aspberger it's... well... *shrug*. My mom jokingly said "Depends on the psychiatrist you ask." Personally, I see my syndrome as a good thing. I do have a high IQ, but that test was done when I was like... six years old. :/ (though personally, I think it's stupid to brag about your IQ. But I have been considering to join MENSA, considering I passed a mini-test on their site with all answers being right. ) (edited by Ailure on 04-03-06 05:56 AM) |

I think a good chunk of people diagnosed with Asperger's don't actually have it. Psycologists and psyciatrists, espically in the US, seem to somehow thing everything is somehow a syndrome or a condition. The problem with this is that it implies that any deviation from the norm is a problem that needs to be somehow "fixed".
Lets look at the Wikipedia broad definiton: "In very broad terms, individuals with Asperger's have normal or above average intellectual capacity, and atypical or poorly developed social skills, often with emotional/social development or integration happening later than usual as a result." Now, I am a Computer Science major at the University of Connecticut. The above sentence accurately describes just about every one of my classmates. Many of them have probably been diagnosed with Asperger's. Do that many have the condition? Probably not. The definition of Asperger's fits ALOT of people. Having now read the Wikipedia article in full, I've noticed that I have virtually every single so-called "symptom" mentioned in the ENTIRE ARTICLE. I'm smart, my coordination sucks, I'm very good at what I do, I tend to take people very literally, and I don't really give a shit about what other people are feeling. People who know me from IRC will also attest to the fact that I reinvent the English language as I go along. Does all this add up to some ominous condition? No. It's called my personality.
