Well, world 1 anyway. You start at the top of this hill; the first level is like Yoshi's House (no real level), the second is an optional "Training Area", then the next 3 are real levels. The plan is to have this in the middle and land all around the edge, with a bridge appearing after you beat the top level.

Basically I just want to know if it's worth proceeding or if I should just re-do it. (One thing that concerns me is size... I'd have put it on a submap, but it's too damn big! ) So here's some screenshots, but keep a few things in mind first:

1) No graphic changes yet. I suck at graphics so don't expect too much, but I do intend to fix the minor things you can see if you look close where I couldn't fit the proper tile in. I'll probably replace that hill on top too, or at least improve it.

2) The level at the top is revealed before it should be, I fixed this after taking the screenshot.

3) I haven't renamed the levels yet.

Thoughts?

Since it's your first overworld, here's some advice:

1)If you're using the original graphics, at least try to use them to add more detail to your overworld.

2)If Mario starts in the top, leave the level revealed. If not, then hide the level until an event takes place.

3)You should rename the levels depending on the name of the world or of the level.

The grass edge corners on the lower half are nonexistant. You need to make the island be further from the water; the way you're presenting it now is ripe with optical illusions (compare the sea level relative to the apparent sides and front of the island). You could TOTALLY fit that into a submap if you just moved it to the center and didn't try to draw the bottom.

Yeah, I had a bit of trouble finding the right tiles at the edges, I'll try to fix that up. You're right about fitting it in a submap though. I forgot I'd shrunk it a bit since last time I tried.

heres a nice little tip. When editing your 'land masses' set all of the ground to the blank green at 1st. when your done said land mass, randomly place the littl green /'s, dirt clods, mini-hills, and other stuff all over the place. It may sound messy, but it works wonders.

*wishes the screenshot link would work >=P

So have I gone completely insane or what?

On the left is a tile in which I drew all 16 colours, left to right, top to bottom. Both LM and Tile Molestor (using a palette extracted from a save state) show colours 0, 1, 8 and 9 as black. In the game, however, they're light brown and there is no black. Yet right next to it is a tile which uses palette 4 and contains black!

[edit] Actually, the palettes just seem to be changing at random. Tiles I didn't even touch are changing colour.

[edit 2] I'm starting to suspect a bug in Tile Molestor. Every tile I so much as copy in it gets messed up. Which is just fucking great, because TLP won't even run and AVG won't even let me try to open YY-CHR.

I don't really get this, do the palettes just change? Anyway, why doesn't TLP work for you? I know about AVG and YY-CHR, same problem here . The map looks good, at least better then I could do I suck at overworld editing.

TLP goes into an infinite loop spouting various errors when I open any file. The palettes themselves don't seem to be changing, rather, the colours the tiles are drawn in. I really have no idea how the image I posted is possible (my guess is either LM or the game is changing the tile's palette number), but there also seems to be a big bug in TM; when I saved, the tiles I'd been editing would have some of their colours switched in LM (blue would be changed to red, and back to blue on the next save, but the actual palettes weren't changing); even if I copied one tile and pasted it somewhere without modifying it, that tile would change colours too.

... That all sounds hilariously impossible

And I know TLP isn't THAT buggy. What are you doing that it's crashing on? You say when it loads anything, but you must have the worst comp ever for that to not just be a hideous exaggeration.

It looks like a mouldy wedding cake floating in water. Actually nice, simple and round. If you had some custom GFX to fix the bottom edges, I could imagine it would look VERY nice.

Maybe if you added some palm trees or some sort of vegetation, it'll look really cool.

Yes. Long before this topic started. *Head explodes* *Xkeeper runs away*

...The pallete differences are ment to be like that. All weirded up because Nintendo still could hardly hold up a raddle. Don't go berserk because the OW palletes differ from the level palletes. just toy around with them as much as you want to see which one's which and then click 'discard rgb changes'

No, the worst computer ever is in many pieces in my basement. I just open any random file, it creates a really big editor window, and crashes.

TLP is buggy for me in a sense that it tends to give errors when working with smaller files (IE: ExGFX files). In addition, it sometimes randomly screws up for no apparant reason when looking through a file.

EDIT: And as for AVG, it needs to take a visit to the museum of tolerance false positives. Or, you could look here.

EDIT 2: As for the overworld, it looks all right. All my problems with it have been addressed, except the odd green soil on the sides of the cliff.

Last I heard all AVs still have it listed. That change seems to have worked though! Now to see if I can edit the graphics with it...

Pretty nice OW.

My PC keeps doing stupid things too. My copy of Tile Molestor worked wonders for quite a while, but then it started going dodgy. I tried TLP, which then didn't work and my PC crashed loads. So I reformatted my PC back to shipping condition, and got TLP, which hasn't failed me yet.

Keep working on the OW, I could do with a bit more work, but then again, I can't talk, I have barely begun my OW...

Good work keep it up!
