I did that to. I used to concider everything a normal cartoon. The first time I heard the word anime I thought it was just a fancy word for cartoon

(cartoon= animnation= short form= anime) That was what I thought.

Well, err... my first anime's weren't really so cool as much as... yeah.

I don't even remember their names, since I was five or something, but on Nick Jr they would play 2 animes every day. One that was basically the adventures of this girl with her pink and blue stuffed bears that could talk, and the other was just super-animefied fairy tales.

I then started leaning towards the Rocko's Modern Life side of animation, and completely forgot about anime. However, my sister's friend, who was anime obsessed, got my sis to buy FF7, and she didn't like it so she gave it to me. And then I was sucked back into this foreign finger trap again.

But the first real anime I ever watched... would be Gundam Wing. Probably one of the better ones to get hooked with, IMO.

Sixth grade. A fifth grade friend and I would always joke around with each other at lunch, calling each other names and stuff. Invariably, she would pull out "Queen Beryl," to which I would reply ".....what?!" She would then explain to me that its the villain on this cartoon show called sailor moon, which I'd never heard of.

Fast forward to the summer between sixth and seventh grade. I see an article in the newspaper on this show called sailor moon. I see it and go "Hey! Thats the show she was always talking about!" So I read the article, and it happens to have channel and show times. Five thirty in the morning on fox? Man...thats pretty early...Oh well. Its summer vacation and its not like I have anything better to do.

Five thirty the next monday. Woah, that chick with the black hair's grandpa got turned into a thing! And that talking cat is eating a cupcake! This is kinda cool! *instantly hooked*

Fast forward to the end of the summer. Playing basketball at the local park, and I start talking to this kid. Somehow I get around to telling him about this sailor moon show Ive been watching. He tells me yeah, he watches that. He watches this other one too, its on sundays. These buff guys fight. Dragonball Z. Good stuff. I should check it out.

Fast forward again. Mid december (I think it was the tenth.) I'm at the mall in this game store (it may have been software ect.) And they have magazines. I glance over, nothing interesting, and turn away. But wait! Was that sailor moon? It was! Whats this? Mixxzine, eh? Lets have a look. Woah! Its...like...comics! But with sailor moon! Cool! *purchase* Hmm? Whats this one? Three girls are trapped in another world, and they have to get home. Theyve got swords! Cool! Magic Knight....what? Rayearth? COOL!

Another fast forward. End of december. Same mall, different store. Comic book shop, buying Magic: the Gathering cards. My mom comes up to me with an issue of some magazine called "animerica" with sailor moon on the cover. "This is that show you like, right?" The guy behind the counter says "You like anime?" "Anime? Whats that?" "Japanese cartoons and stuff." "What?" "You like sailor moon?" "Yeah!" "Thats anime." "Dragon Ball and Rayearth too?" "Yeah, thats all anime. It comes from japan." "Cool!" The guy gives me a flyer. "You should come to FanimeCon. Its about two hours away, but its good stuff." "Can we mom?" "Probably."

Fast forward one more time, Februrary 14th 1998, Fanime. *brain melts* *goes home, goes to the local video store, and starts renting all the anime they have, starting with Tenchi Muyo and Universe (that led to some confusion for a while XD) and Devil Hunter Youko* I went to fanime again next year, and havent missed one yet. Fanime 06 will be #9 in a row for me.

I didnt even watch any anime that first year XD Admission was $5 each for my mom and I, and I spent about seventy dollars in the dealers room (both domestic sailor moon CDs, Sailormoon playing cards, a magic knight rayearth clearfile, and a bunch of rayearth trading cards. I still have everything except the CDs, which were stolen.) I also saw my first cosplayers (one sailor moon, one sailor mercury, and one each of the magic knights, who were DEAD ON. I'll tell that story someday.) Finally, I got my butt handed to me in the Quake 2 tournament (it was cutting edge brand new at the time, and I'd never played it before.)

And thats how I got my start. The rest, as they say, is history.

I watched Samurai Pizza Cats when I was in third grade. I would watch it every morning and then I'd have to run to catch the bus to school. I also watched the first 20 or so episodes of Dragon Ball and alot of Sailor Moon.

I didn't watch much else besides those until a few years later when I actually started getting into anime.

Normally I would say that it's a bad idea to bump threads, but in this case I'm glad you did, as seeing this got me to re-start my search for some of the first anime that I saw. It was a movie that aired on the sci-fi channel a number of years ago (10, maybe?)...and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. So I did a search trying to find what anime was played on the sci-fi channel, and found it.

Green Legend Ran...I wouldn't mind seeing it again, in its uncut version (apparently a LOT was cut from the version aired in the US)...
