I like to say that 2D games are prone to having better gameplay than 3D games because they can't rely on impressive graphics, cutscenes, and storylines to attract people to buy them. Of course, it's not exactly accurate. What does this have to do with anything? Absolutely nothing.

Now, I'm interested in seeing how many others would like to see a straight up 2D action/adventure game released on a modern generation system such as the PS2 or GCN.

Take some of the greatest (2D) game franchises of all time, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario, and imagine how much greater they would be today on one of the aforementioned systems. There could easily be 50+ lengthy, levels; Eye popping backgrounds and foregrounds; Incredibly deep gameplay... the list is practically endless. Pound for pound, a game like that could yield a much greater value than any 3D game of the same price.

What do you think?

2D games can't have cut-scenes or good storylines?

Megaman and Final Fantasy are going to be crushed when they hear this news.

I've discussed this with some of my friends, and we've agreed that 3D games can often have better gameplay simply by virtue of BEING 3D. You have a lot more depth, no pun intended, on the environments in a 3D world than a 2D one, a lot more things you can do.

I do like 2D alot, and there is a gamecube game that is 2D. The game is The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure. That game wasn't shabby, but I would like to see a 2D Mario style game on the GCN.

Finally, someone I can completely agree with. I've always thought it would be amazing to get a gigantic Metroid game, with the power of today's consoles ... with Super Metroid's engine. Who care's if it's 2D, has sprites, whatever, it could be a massive game with a massive amount of enemies, items, whatever.

But in all honesty you can't really compare 2D to 3D. They have different factors, that make them better than the other, and worse.

2D has restriction, but simplicity. 3D is more open, but more complex.

And truthfully I don't think a lot of games can translate well into another dimension. Sonic the Hedgehog, Gradius, etc, they all wouldn't seem right in 3D (face it, the Adventure series is pretty horrible).

Sure, I play a lot more of my old consoles, than new. Just because I loved those simple games on the Genesis, NES, and SNES, they have a nostaglic feel to them, and whatnot. But I don't really think just because I prefer old, 2D games, really means they're necessarily better.

I don't know if any of that made sense, but whatever.

In fighting games especially, 2-D seems more capable of depth. Any 'tard can pull off 23098409403 different juggle (jiggle?) combos in Dead or Alive. But mastering King of Fighters, Street Fighter or The Last Blade takes skill.
