Icegoom, I love your FG; are you going to advance the GFX on the BG too?

You should release this as a GFX hack of SMW too.

You kick ASS! If you DO decide to pimp out the background, I'm behind you all the way.

Though, I agree with some others about the pipes looking odd and the FG being too pale. If I may make a suggestion, maybe try and make the neck of the pipes a bit thinner than they currently are. That might make them look a bit more natural. Just a pixel or two thinner ought to do it. If it turns out looking like crap, you know who to blame. Also, I think that the --> sign looks a bit too... folded. Otherwise, it's looking fantastic! You should definitely keep this up.

Icegoom, I really like your pixel work, but your palettes could still use some work. Maybe it's just me, but I really don't like sharp vivid contrast between colors on the same object. For example, the flying Koopa in the Donut Plains 1 shot. He's just too... blah. I think he'd look better if his skin was yellower and you reduced the... strength of the gradient. If that makes any sense at all.

And again, maybe that's just my opinion. I just prefer flatter shading in general (look at my past work for examples).

I'm not satisfied with the pipes yet, either. Those are basically a rip from Super Princess Peach, but I don't have nearly as many colors to work with and I'm going to need to figure something else out.

The line through the center of the sign is supposed to signify that it's made of two boards nailed to a stick.

I'm not real happy about all the plain green in the center, but that's the way the tiles are assembled. I should probably use the map16 editor and make it have individual leaves visible everywhere.

don't stick to Super Princess Peach too closely because that game really sucked. Princess Peach's eyes didn't even look very good, and she's the main sprite. But most of my hostility toward that game is because of its awful gameplay, so... I dunno. Mostly ranting here.

I don't even own a DS, so I haven't actually played it. I've just seen some screenshots and liked the style that was sort of an intermediate between Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

You really need to work on your palettes. Your koopas' colors need to be lighter so the white on their noses isn't so vivid, the ground must be less pale, and the white on the tips of the blocks' eyes don't look right.

Yeah, I am struggling with palettes. Such a wide variety of different objects share palettes that it's hard to tweak one and not mess up something someplace else. The ground's palette was more high contrast, but I didn't like how "textured" it made things look:

The solution is probably to just revert the ground pattern to sand grains instead of the dirt look I was going for there.

I do need to fix the koopas' palettes. If plain white wasn't hard-coded into the game, I'd change it to a very light yellow to help things out, but since that's not an option, I need to lighten the skin tone. Here's every enemy so far that uses a blue palette (I really should probably change that Hammer Bro green...):

OK, so I've got to try to brighten the koopa's skin while keeping it nicely outlined against any environment and not mess up any of the other sprites:

That's a lot more yellow, and the koopa maybe looks better, but some of the others lose visual clarity. Heh. No one ever said spriting was easy. If someone else wants to try tweaking the palette, go for it. I can change some of the enemies to use other palettes, and some stuff's going to need redrawing no matter how I change things, I imagine, but I'm up for that.

it's not the plain green, it's just the contrast between the edge and the middle.

I think the second koopa palette looks better.

If he releases this as a GFX hack of SMW, do you think it will replace Peter_ac's GFX version of it?

You're right, that's actually a lot uglier. Stick with your original palette, as that's the best so far, definitely. On the subject of changing the white color, you're correct insofar as that you cannot easily change the hardcoded white on the default palettes, but if custom palettes are enabled for the level, you change every palette entry to whatever you want right in Lunar Magic. The only drawback is you would have to do that manually for every single level in the game.

The koopa's could use some work in my opinion, they still look nice. They are still worth keeping.
I might as well bring up my own updated version that I made a while back.

Well, at least to me, the shell was clearly different. It seemed a lot shinier and the bottom of it was more colorful. Well, those new Koopas seem to fit the SMW style a little better, but it doesn't really seem to fit this style as well.

Oh, and I prefer the dirt-esque ground to the sand grain ground. It just seems more original and detailed.

Here's what Mattrizzle said about the Iggy/Larry hair issue:

From experimenting with this data I know that the hair tiles cannot be changed individually. Attempting to give Iggy the proper hair will just make Larry have Iggy's hair. Someone with a greater knowledge of ASM might be able to bypass this limitation, though.

I hope this gets fixed soon. We can't let Iggy and Larry have the same hair forever.

You want a yellow shade in-between the two you've shown, but with more white in it so it doesn't look ugly when up against the white shade. Because that's what it does.

Maybe you want to try something like this:
Dark:

Light:

In between:

This one could be slightly darker, but I think it looks better then either one of the other 2.
