Nova dismounted and scratched Sabor's head. The great sabrecat purred and sidled up to the rogue.

Nova: Aw, he's just a big kitten after all.

The rogue noticed that the man wasn't going to budge.

Nova: Come on, guys, it's probably best if we stay away from the main cars anyway.

JD: Either way's fine with me, I can sleep anywhere.

Meanwhile, further down the train...

Glenn: *shuts livestock car door* Why do I get the strange feeling something has occured with the rest of the group while I'm over here?

Johnathan: "Things like this have a tendency to happen to us, if you will kindly remember..."

He settled his horse and patted it on the nose gently, much preferring to walk than ride the train.

Johnathan was actually a steam engineer before being hired by the Outset Ranch. He chose a quieter life because the developments that he had been researching for a steam engine had far outpaced those of the current times. He had speculated on alternative resources to coal and Magitek, even going to the possibility that one could literally fuel a simple steel engine on Rupees, due to a carbonized compound in their crystalline bodies. He presented the idea to a symposium of his peers, and was, well, needless to say, laughed out of the gathering.

His work was genius, though. Johnathan knew it was. He still had some of his old blueprints lying around in his room on the Ranch... But obviously, it was going to be a very long time before he saved up the resources and manpower to build a prototype.

As a result, Johnathan was not especially privy to trains. Knowing the business fairly well, he also knew that trains had a tendency to get robbed very often by certain daring adventurer bandit types. No, sir. Fighting bandits was not his style. Not anymore, anyway.

"I am not particularly fond of these livestock cars, either. Shall we venture more towards the front of the train? Perhaps your presumption about the rest of our group is more fearfully correct than it seems..."

Nova started to lead the group towards the back cars.

Nova: I've got to think that even without Sabor here, people might not take kindly to our group. We certainly look like we could take down something fierce, and the people in there don't know it's for the best. Probably best not to alarm anybody.

Glenn turned toward Johnathan in a somewhat startled manner.

Glenn: I thought you were showing those two to the passenger cars! *hushedly* We need to keep an eye on them, Johnathan...

However, Glenn noticed the mercenary, his cat, and the poncho-wearing crazy guy were headed toward him and Johnathan... And away from the passenger cars.

Glenn: Could you two experienced fellows not find the passenger cars? Or would they not let you on without tickets or one of us with you?

JD: Nah, they just weren't too happy with whiskers here. *motions in sabor's general direction* Said we should ride in the cargo car in the back.

Glenn: *sigh* How troublesome...

"ALL ABOOOOOOARD!"

The familar sound of a train making a declaration caught everyone's attention. Passengers who weren't already on the train quickly rushed inside the cars.

Johnathan: "Hrm. Far be it for me to ride in a cargo car... I will see you at the end of our journey, if you are so insistent upon staying back here."

He turned his back on the three of them, and strode to the front of the train, where the conductor was waiting for him. Johnathan showed his deliveryman's boarding pass, and was granted access after a quick glance at the conveniently-provided picture. He found himself an empty room in one of the boarding cars, and placed himself down in the corner of the room, staring out the window at the pastures that rolled alongside the train.

'Miss Hikari,' he thought, 'I do hope you are not pushing yourself too hard in your condition.'

The train's whistle blew, and the final calls for passengers were made. Johnathan closed his eyes, and dozed off...

Nova led Sabor and any of the rest of the group who thought it best to lie low to the back of the train, where the cargo cars were. There was a lot of room in one of them, which the rogue decided to choose. After checking around to make sure there weren't any other riders in the car, he hopped up and urged the others to follow.

Nova: Ah, this is the way to travel. I've never really been too...social...anyway.

Glenn: Never would've guessed.

Glenn saw in one corner of the car, a large padded chair which had some sheets covering it.

Glenn: Dibs!

Glenn quickly sat in the chair and stretched out a bit.

Glenn: Might as well get comfy, this ride will take a little while.

The train gave its final signal before it started its departure. The initial ride started to feel a bit bumpy before the train had chugged into a comfortable speed.

Meanwhile, a stewardess walked through the main cars, with a cart full of treats and ales. She had a very cheerful face on, and seemed to walk just fine despite the fact that she never opens her eyes.

Nova: Since we'll be here a while, mind telling me your story, how you came to be involved with them?

Sabor just slumped over onto the ground, while Nova searched for something suitably comfortable to sit on. Eventually he found a large pile of...something...under some tarps, and it seemed good enough. He lounged in that and looked over at Glenn, awaiting a response.

Glenn: Oh, I've worked at the ranch for years, and lived there even before that... My father, goddesses rest his soul, was also a ranch hand... And my mother...

Glenn looked off to no direction in particular.

Glenn: She died when I was still very young. ... And what's your- ?

Glenn looked over to crate that JD had decided to sit on, only to find the man once again sleeping.

Nova: Who, me?

The rogue stretched out on the covered pile of materials as he considered where to begin.

Nova: Well, my full history would take a while, but why I'm here is pretty simple. I came to check out the ranch on a mission for my employer, who wants to acquire it by any means necessary. I've been trying to get out of the game for a while, and something like this is really pushing it. But I figured it might be good to check out the ranch anyway, for my sake and theirs.

Sabor yawned and moved around a bit, content with the floor of the car, but a bit bothered by the now moving train.

Nova: Seems we're finally picking up some good speed. Anyway, so I wanted to talk to Hikari about what might be happening in the near future...and when I found out she'd been poisoned while I was around, I felt like I needed to do something to help. Besides, as a mercenary not enough people trust you, which makes it hard to leave the game. This could help build some trust. Besides, it shouldn't be too tough.

The sound of gunshots from farther up on the train were barely audible over the sound of the movement on the rails.

Nova: Maybe I spoke too soon.

However masked the sound of gunfire was, it woke up JD perfectly, and he was now on his feet with his guns in his hands.

JD: A train robbery? How droll.

Glenn: Do you even know what that word means?

JD: Not at all.

Meanwhile, further up the train, in the passenger cars...

Two figures had been walking around the train looking around as if suspicious of something for the entire ride. Their features were obscured by the large coats and hats they had been wearing, but as soon as gunshots were heard the two had immediately thrown their coats aside revealing that they were both well-figured women. One of them with darker skin and blonde hair tied up with a dark red ribbon was wearing a frilly pink cowgirl-type shirt, khaki pants, and pink cowboy boots; meanwhile the other with fair skin and dark, almost greenish hair wore a more reasonable outfit that was all white except for the black belt and boots and an orange headband. Both of them had star-shaped badges attached to their shirts.

Fair Woman: Everybody stay calm, there's no need to panic!

Blonde Woman: Wow, Kiyone, you were right about someone planning to rob this train!

Fair Woman (Kiyone): Of course I was. With that amount of money onboard it was inevitable. Now come on!

The two ran in the direction the gunfire had come from.

There was hollering and more gunfire coming from the pack of scruffy bandits, all pushing their horses to the limit to keep up with the train. They approached the train from both sides, and quickly ditched their horses as soon as they got close enough. Two thugs managed to latch onto the front of the train, while the rest flooded into the main cars and the rear cargo cars.

The car that Nova and the others were in suddenly had its side door opened..

Bandit: 'Ey! There ain't no money in here! Jus' a bunch a bums.

The bandit, along with a few others jumped inside.

Bandit: Move yer asses if you don't wanna be capped.

No sooner had these words left the bandit's mouth than a gunshot was fired and the bandit's gun flew out of his hand. A few more gunshots and the other thieves who had jumped in the car's guns did the same. The main bandit stared down at his now-empty hand in astonishment for a moment, before raising his face just in time for it to intercept the foot that was headed towards it. This foot was followed by a leg, which was followed by a nicely flowing poncho, and then the rest of JD. The force from the blow caused the bandit to fly backwards into his still-confounded accomplises, sending them all falling back out the door where they colided with the seemingly moving ground with quite a bit of force and rolled out of sight.

JD: Bums my bum.

Nova had smiled at the bandit's rather poor entrance, and had prepared to leap into action after some clever quip.

But JD had beaten him to it. The action, anyway. The kid needed more work on his witty banter, that was certain. Not too subtle, either. Nova didn't even bother to get up from his lounging spot as he leaned in JD's direction.

Nova: Nice work, kid. Not the smoothest way of doing it, but it gets the job done. Care to check out the rest of the train, or let the guys up there handle it and just chill back here?

Johnathan heard the gunfire and roused from his dozing...

'Oh, goodness no...' he thought. It was happening again...

Train robbers were the worst of the lot back when he was a railroad engineer. There were the money-seekers, the kidnappers, and the hijackers, but the worst of the lot were the scrappers. People who'd jack a train and stop it just to take the engine or the wheels or the furnaces. How they got away with it was beyond Johnathan, but somehow they did. It was what caused him to quit the business, outside of his ideas being laughed out of any kind of symposium.

He rose from his seat, and took one look at the stewardess before grabbing the pitcher of water off of her cart and downing it in several seconds.

He'd need the ammo.

Stewardess: Sir! Sir! You forgot to pay!

Her face was full of confusion, yet her eyes still were closed...

Meanwhile, the frightened passengers pushed themselves onto the floor as they heard the footsteps of the bandits running around ontop of the cars. They prayed for a tunnel to move overhead, but no amount of praying was going to make a tunneled mountain appear to knock the bandits off.

The bandits ran up and down the train, firing wildly into cars below them.

JD, being at least 30, looked at Nova with an eyebrow raised.

JD: Who you callin' kid, kid? And if you're serious about turnin' your karma around, you'd best help people at every opportunity that arises.

And with that, JD tucked one of his guns back in its holster and swung himself out the door of the car and onto its roof.
