They're quite easy to figure out. YY-CHR or whatever utility should tell you what 8 X 8 tile you're on when you move your mouse over it. Find the matching numbers in ROM and change them to whatever you want. Changing the GFX page of a sprite might be trickier, though. As for addresses, try here and here.

I still think these would work best with ExGfx ripped from other SNES games. I can try changing all the environments, but anyone using these should probably be trying to build their levels out of something other than Super Mario World's default tiles. Also, I would like some feedback on how these animations actually look during gameplay, which spritesheets and screenshots can't convey all that well. Consider the sprites only version a demo?

As for not building your levels out of regular tiles, what do you suppose is the alternative? I don't know of any games with tilesets these sprites would look good against. There are only two ways these sprites will look decent, and that's along with backgrounds either made by you or an improbably good copycat.

I can see the need for feedback. My suggestions on this went too far; while n00bs abusing graphics are annoying they shouldn't impede the progress of things like this. But I would recommend that you get a good start on the non-sprites before releasing the sprite patch so we don't have people settling for the sprite patch sheerly out of impatience. But maybe that's going too far, too...

No, you don't. Which is better, spending time on those three-hit monsters, or on valuable FG/BG gfx we need in order for hacks with this patch to look good? Just leave those jerks out; your hatred of them will probably get in the way of your progress on them anyway. Save 'em for last.

Somebody with mad skills should turn them all into Hammer Bros. or something. I'll start on it, but, well, I'm a mediocre ASM hacker.

Wrapping up, the spiny eggs should be more red and less orange, and more like spiny eggs instead of.... whatever the hell they look like now. The new grinders are pretty sweet. The ! blocks are nice, but if you can't make that upper line on that last block to light purple perhaps you should make the other blocks' upper lines white to match. See if you can make the line more like a shine. As is, it just looks like a white line.

Since I've not really tried using ExGfx yet, I speak pretty much in ignorance when I say things like, "Oh yeah, um... these sprites will work with that whole... uh, ExGfx thingee." I've seen screenshots that mix environments from other cartoony 16 bit games with All-Stars Mario 3 graphics and end up looking pretty decent, so I just assumed these could be used the same way. Just for fun, I decided to see what the sprites might look like (badly) inserted into some other games:

DISCLAIMER: FAKE SCREENSHOTS FOLLOW

Lost Vikings II:

Lester the Unlikely:

Bugs Bunny - Rabbit Rampage:

Donkey Kong Country 2:

Demon's Crest

Castlevania - Dracula X

Um, so yeah, they don't fit all that well. The problems are proportional on most of them. Mario sprites are small compared to most other games. I guess SMW sprites will always work best with SMW environments, so I will work on foreground graphics some before I release anything.

The sprites are all good but I took a good close look at Chuck. He's rather porky and very ugly, you must really not like Chuck! Reminds me of the Elmer's Glue mascot or the pig from TMNT.

Heh heh. I maybe exaggerated a little about how much I hate Chuck. (I never have thought they fit the game's theme, though) I did take a good amount of time trying to make the heads look right, and I had a running animation I thought looked pretty good, but it didn't work once I inserted it into the game. Chucks are pieced together kind of weirdly, so some of the body frames I just did glorified recolorings of the original bodies to make sure nothing would be too glitchy-looking.

I believe there was someone who already ripped that. It was probably more than one person, however. In any case, I swear that I have seen that in a hack, or at least in a screenshot of a hack before.

Yeah, someone did. I forgotten the name of that hack but it was ripped by Atma-X... if I got his name spelled correctly. I think I also had that GFX files in my Super Mario Universe hack, but it could of been burried deep inside due to massive aounts of ExGFX files.

I fell in love with the Bug Bunny FG/BG; you would have to take out Elmer Fudd, but you could make that change to like Yoshi from Frappe Snowland on Mario Kart 64.

I believe it was in Atma's Ultima Graphic Hack or whatever is what called. If I remember right, it was free for everyone to use it, but I do not know, if anyone really did it. Since he released his graphic hack, the only ExGFX I've seen from his hack was this forest/lake thing along with the new Wiggler-GFX, I think, but that could be a coincidence.

But there were also some problems with that hack. It has excellent graphics, but the status bar palette and even Mario's Palette were totally miscoloured, so if you really wanted to use it, you would have a lot of work to do to fix everything.

Don't forget, those screenshots in Icegoom's last post are fake. I mean it's possible to insert them into a SMW hack.... but I'm sure most of the colors go beyond the SMW color coding limit, or crap like that.

I also think it'll be hard to find a working download on Atma's hack.

The 'Lester the Unlikely' foreground would look pretty cool. I'd love to see what you'll come up with.

Being a Castlevania fan, please don't put Mario in Dracula X!!!

I have no plans to use graphics from any of those games. I'm sure all those screenshots would be extremely difficult if not impossible to replicate in Super Mario World. I was just pasting my sprites on top of screenshots from a wide range of SNES games to see how well they'd fit in with other styles.

My own foreground graphics are going to stick with the style I've been using for the sprites.

Icegoom, that'll be cool. You've made the typical SMW graphics and dressed them up awesome, so I think your FG and BG will be good too. Are you going to keep the same SMW BG/FG and dress them up? Or something else?

Those inspired me to make this fake screenshot as well. Taken from Mega Man: The Wily Wars for Sega Genesis.

The plan at this point is just to try my hand at redrawing the terrain tiles the same I am the sprites. In fact, I got a bit of a start on the foreground stuff this afternoon. Some tentative shots:

Palettes are the most subject to change, since I'll probably find other places in the game where stuff is screwed up. Editing the environments isn't as difficult as I'd convinced myself it was going to be, so I'm definitely going to keep this up. How's the terrain looking? Does it still look like a Mario game? I continue to use screenshots from Super Princess Peach and the New Super Mario Bros as my main inspiration.

You just pointed out how they "don't fit all that well" and everybody else seems to be happily oblivious to that. That is exactly why I was worried about you releasing the sprite-only patch. A good deal of people here are just too stupid to figure out what looks okay and what doesn't.

I'll admit, your graphics fit a lot better with those screenshots than I would have thought. But because of the different shading style you use and the way your sprites seem to be tilted slightly towards the FG, there just aren't enough games out there to rip from to make a whole hack. That's why you gotta keep working on those FG graphics. Good luck, Icegoom.

Edit: You posted while I posted. You really need to work on your palettes. Your koopas' colors need to be lighter so the white on their noses isn't so vivid, the ground must be less pale, and the white on the tips of the blocks' eyes don't look right. Also, don't stick to Super Princess Peach too closely because that game really sucked. Princess Peach's eyes didn't even look very good, and she's the main sprite. But most of my hostility toward that game is because of its awful gameplay, so... I dunno. Mostly ranting here.

Very impressive! My only complaint with the foreground so far, is the pipes. They just look...unusual. The same applies to the arrow sign.

I have been watching this and everything seems to be coming out pretty well so far. There really is one thing that in my opinion that can be improved. That would be some of the power-ups.
You can use some more dimension to them. Take mine into example.

But the best choice for yourself is your own.
