I mean, you hear all about it in high school (heck and in some middle schools as well) and then it gets around that if you haven't done "it" you're not cool or whatever the case may be,

So does it make it a trend? People having sex just to fit in?

I dunno how long it's been since you were in high school or anything, but I have never once been told I wasn't cool, nor have I told anyone that they weren't cool based on whether or not they've had sex. I don't think that doesn't make it in some way a trend, but at the same time, I think it's more a by-product of our society becoming more and more open-minded on the public level.

I've bene out for .... holy shit, 8 years now. Wow.

Anyway, especially in middle school, you could tell that who the popular ones were and they weren't shy to talk about their sex life either.

Maybe it was different at my school, but people pretty rarely actually talked about their sexual escapades. That's not to say, however, that such things were not important in the pecking order. The difference is that there was a lot of general knowledge of what had happened, which went through different networks of friends, about general popularity with the ladies, among the guys at the school. Sex itself was often assumed, but not really necessary. If you had an attractive girlfriend, that was a status symbol in itself, whether or not she "put out" wasn't really discussed that much.

But I definitely see where you're coming from, and I agree. Popular culture has told us that we SHOULD be having sex, with lots of people, often, or we're not cool. Whether you want to say it's moral decay of society or not is arguable, but it certainly cheapens the meaning sex can have.

My experience was basically the same as skydude's. I've been out of high school for six years.

There were people at my school who would always talk about themselves having sex trying to get popular. I mean, they had some people to talk to but really everyone just called them sluts behind their back. I don't see anything wrong with being sexually active in highschool. I was... But I guess the difference is I didn't run around telling the whole school about my night with like 5 guys.

Is sex education mandatory yet over there? It's been here in Sweden for quite awhile now... and there's alot about sex in the media and been like that for awhile.

And I wonder becuse I heard about the high-rates of teen-pregnacy over there. It's less common around here.

Trend? Hardly, I think it's just a side-effect of our culture opening up about sex.

In the beginning of the 20th century, it was frowned upon to kiss in public. Now you have to be a gay couple to caught any attention from people, and even that is on the way of being well-accepted. Well at least in this country.

Intresting about how guys worldwide boasts about how many girls they got laid with. Something tells me that it's a stupid thing to boast about. :/

I know what Anya's saying. Two friends actually lied to me and told me that they weren't virgins... and they were.

It definatly has to do with where you've grown up. I've never felt this pressure to have sex at all. And yes, I did for the first time like... almost a month ago.. but it happened in a good way... not like, I didn't just have sex because it was trendy.

But I have been told "OMG.. you're a virgin? That's so cute". Or stuff like.. "Omg.. wtf? You're a virgin? Just have sex already, it feels so good." Like... uh, alot.

I hate Staten Island. If you get the chance... watch True Life: I live in Staten Island on MTV. Yes, it's so bad... they filmed a True Life on it. And just cry tears for me.

[edit: I used the word "like"... way way too much.]

Nobody makes fun of you at my school if you're a virgin. Nobody really cares about anyone but themself. Then again, I don't hang out with the kind of people that party and sleep around every Saturday night, so maybe it's just the people I surround myself with that keep me out of the "omg virgin how lame" group.

Sex has pretty much been the same thing ever since we had the basis for civilization and chicks and dudes found out that having sex is pretty groovy feeling.

Whoever has sex to fit in a crowd should get shot...

I can kinda see how the media influences adolescent vermin.

Pink Barbie Doll Hype = Lust
MTV = Lust and Stupidity
Whores like the Hilton Twins, Hilary Duff, etc... = Poor role models
8+ hours a day on cellphones = Microwaved braincells

Let's add it all up...

Lust x 2 + stupidity x poor role models - brain cells = teen pregnancy

Don't know that, at my high school, there was any pressure, per se, but kind of like drinking or smoking the mara-ju-waaaana, if, by the time you're in college, you haven't had sex, then it's not an issue. It's basically a decision you make for yourself, no more, no less.

Although if you're 40 and just never got around to it... (ahem)

I don't think people cared as much in my highschool, and if you were a virgin, they didn't go out of their way to make you feel bad. More or less, it was the other way around, depending on how popular you were. The less popular kids were called sluts and trash for having sex. The popular kids weren't.

In my school, if you're a girl who's had sex... you are a slut. But if you are a guy and you've had sex you are TEH SHIT.

Welcome to Staten Island.
