IceGoom is a frickin' beast, holy crap, you definently are better than the nintendo aritsts, my favorite sprites are the baby yoshi, baby mario, actually, every one is my favorite keep it up, I can't wait until you post a demo of your game, KEEP IT LOCKED!

Why else would he make it so easy to do this?

Yep. Nothing is unrippable if you know what you're doing. Even if he were to lock his hack, someone with enough determination would find a way to get the graphics anyway. Heck, I ripped this just from the spritesheets he's posted already.
All this fear of "dumbasses will use it and then it will suck as a result OMG" is ultimately pointless. As I learned with Zelda Classic, good graphics don't suck because some idiot kid can't make them shine. It's just the idiot's hack that sucks, period.

Now, as for the screenshot itself, take a look: I noticed Mario's default stance looked a little slim, so I made him portlier. Icegoom, I recommend you apply the Luigi GFX patch so the Bros can use different graphics... the original sprite would, for instance, be better on Luigi.

I absolutely adore that baby yoshi! I never expected anyone as good as you to come around and make such appealing sprites! You're the best GFX artist I've ever seen!

I really like the Twomps; I like how more spikey-sharp they look. The Rip Van Fish makes me laugh, I like his psychotic look.

Heh. I was wondering if anyone would try inserting stuff from the spritesheets before I got the patch done. Yeah, these are going to be completely free for anyone to use. I'm going to modify them a lot further to fit the theme of my own hack anyway.

I've been pondering what to do about Luigi. I'd probably go something like this for him if I gave him his own graphics:



I saw a patch for separate character graphics in Advanced ROM hacking, but haven't bothered to apply it. Does it create any sort of glitches?

Haven't got a whole lot to show right now. Lil Sparky and Hothead:



I went with a Paper Mario sun-like look. I could also go more electrical if these aren't working.

And I started working on blocks and coins, which I maybe shouldn't be doing for the sprite only patch:



Question block and coin are based screenshots on the New Super Mario Bros. I spent quite a bit of time trying different ways to animate the question block, but nothing was really working and I sort of like it still. I'm going to experiment with some other styles of coins, I think, because the outlines I have look kind of rough against light skies. I'm not sure the lighter outlines are working on the face blocks and I might need to switch back to black outlines on everything.

I'd suggest that you make a patch where everything is change, even the back/foregounds. I like what I see, alot! Would be cool if you change it all...

I love these sprites! The one thing I think is off is that Mario's head seems to be at a strange angle, kind of like he's tilting his head backwards a bit. Nice use of some Mario Party Advance sprites for Mario, though.

I haven't found any yet (nor have I got any bug reports). However, it's probably incompatible with some other patches, which may use the same ROM space. Also, the patch should be applied to a fresh ROM.

Don't release a sprite-only patch before the full one. I said it and Kyouji said it: without matching graphics these graphics will look bad. Which is a shame because in their own context they look pretty great. It's up to you to do this because the majority SMW hackers aren't able to accurately judge things for themselves.

Some minor stuff: Dino Torch's ears are little off. You have several unused palette spots that are just black in original SMW. I don't remember what their limitations are, but look into 'em. The koopas don't need more shades if you just make their skin lighter so it isn't such a contrast compared to white. Hothead's spikes need to be more diagonal instead of vertical so they seem to change more when they flip. Try to repoint Iggy and Larry's hair to different graphic parts; there are a lot of xs marking free space. I don't think the teeth on Rip Van look right and he would look better without.

In closing, Larry, Iggy, Baby Yoshi, those new shaded blocks, and the like are all excellent but not on SMW's backgrounds. Give a sprite-only patch to the masses without the complete one and it will be ABUSED. Only you can prevent this. We are depending on you, Icegoom.

I was going to do Paper Mario Beetles before they released the new SMB art, but I really think I prefer Buzzy's new look. I could do an alternate head pretty easily.


Dino Torch's ears are little off.

I think that Dino Torch looks all right, but Dino Rhino is kind of messed up. I drew his snout from a profile view and his eyes and ears from a three quarters view, so I just need to correct the perspective problem, I think.


I don't think the teeth on Rip Van look right and he would look better without.


Aw, I really like the way he looks with teeth... I guess they're easily enough erased, though. Just blot some black over them. Most hacks I've seen replace Rip with Blooper, and I seriously considered just drawing a new Blooper sprite to replace him, but I guess someone might want to use Rip.

I do want to change some the character tilemaps a bit, but I haven't opened up a hex editor yet and tried it. I've only ever changed tilemaps around in the original Super Mario Bros, so I don't know if Super Mario World's going to be as easy to figure out. Can anyone point me towards some offsets?

I still think these would work best with ExGfx ripped from other SNES games. I can try changing all the environments, but anyone using these should probably be trying to build their levels out of something other than Super Mario World's default tiles. Also, I would like some feedback on how these animations actually look during gameplay, which spritesheets and screenshots can't convey all that well. Consider the sprites only version a demo?

Dragon Coin:


Better portrait of Yoshi on the coin.

! Blocks:


Um, they're multi-colored.

Yoshi Egg:


Basically the same as the old one, I guess.

Spiny Egg:


Just didn't bother doing these when I did Spiny earlier, I guess. They look pretty good in game.

Grinder:


Went for a little more realistic of a look.

Bowser Statue:


I like the greyscale palette. It's easy to work with.

Chargin' and Clappin' Chuck:


The two Chucks I've bothered with. I really hate these guys and am inclined not to sprite them, but I'm obliged to give every sprite in the game equal treatment. (We lost out on Hammer Bros variety for these chuckleheads. Yeah, football players fit into the dinosaur land theme so much better than evolved turtles tossing around caveman looking hammers...) Basically I've just added some detail to the heads and changed their uniform to more closely match the character art. I've still got a bunch of varieties of these things to get through...

The ! blocks are awsome and so is the dragon coin. chargin' chucks do suck but if you have to make more sprites, then you have to make more sprites. can't wait to see luigi when hes all tricked out

The sprites are all good but I took a good close look at Chuck. He's rather porky and very ugly, you must really not like Chuck! Reminds me of the Elmer's Glue mascot or the pig from TMNT.
