As far as I know black metal has always been about satanism and evil and stupid crap like that so I tend to not let the lyrics of stuff influence what I listen to.

Hell the quality of the recording is usually enough to keep me from listening to a lot of black metal.

Well, there's a difference between that aspect of it and Nazi-esque leanings. Most of the hate crimes that I can think of involving black metal were religious in nature, not racially motivated, but wasn't there one prominent musician who went the white power route in jail? Forget the guy's name.

Varg. :P He's in jail for killing a guy, and he's very much a Nazi-esque scumbag. Still, he's made some good music... I like Burzum's self-titled, anyway. Haven't heard anything else.

I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Bruce Dickinson's single albums, what are they like? Are they any good? Worth checking out?

He's got a good voice (I prefer Geoff Tate though), but I honestly have -no idea- what his single stuff sounds like. I've heard it's quite different than his work with Iron Maiden.

Haven't heard Dickinson's solo stuff, but there's no way Geoff Tate has a better voice than him. Tate uses falsetto to hit those high notes. Dickinson has loads better range in the vocal cords and hits the high notes without using cheap falsetto, and I like his voice better anyway. It's your choice if you like Tate more, but Dickinson is by far the more technically proficient. :P

Anyway, I know you were just saying you prefer Tate, but...I thought I'd throw that out there anyway. :)

Oh yeah... Carcass' Heartwork is another swell album.

Dickinson and Tate are both amazing vocalists... I think Tate has a better tone. If it is falsetto then he does an amazing job getting it to sound as strong and rich as he does.

AF: Jeeze, all I said was I 'prefer' ...

But then again, I couldn't say I knew that. According to Wiki however, even Rob Halford uses that technique.

So overall I would actually say I do think Bruce has a stronger voice, but I think Tate does a better job hitting the higher / operish notes. 'Queen of the Reich' is a great example.

Michael Kiske is probably the 3rd best vocalist in terms of this style. I'm not so sure what his Supared band is about (I've heard it's not really metal), but his early work in the 80's with Helloween, and their Keeper of the Seven Keys (albums that put anything Iron Maiden and Queensryche put out to shame in my opinion. Okay, maybe not to 'shame', but they were incredible and created Power Metal) albums was incredible. He doesn't have as much as a range as Tate or Dickinson, but he does a perfect job sounding just like them.

So yeah, I guess I'll have to check out Bruce's single works.

I have just downloaded (*tsk tsk*) lots of Amon Amarth. Anyone ever heard of them? They're some swedish death/viking metal band. I have been listening to them some today, and they seem to be pretty good.

I would just like to say, by the way, that King Diamond has the most awesome falsetto ever. I just recently heard Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath, and man is it good. I need to hurry up and hear more Mercyful Fate and King Diamond.

I saw Amon Amarth with Children of Bodom and Trivium in December. It was awesome, there was this skinny nerdy guy who had a European accent and was like "YOU LIKE VIKING METAL YA"

Back in my youth i was hugely into metal. Towards the end of high school i lost interest in most of it. I used to really be into death metal and such. Carcass was at one time my favorite band.
When i was in middle school, Iron Maiden was my favorite band. Now, looking back on my collection, i dont really care much for anything Iron Maiden has done since they changed singers. But i recently played the first Iron Maiden album again, and Killers, and was surprised at just how good they are. All these years later they still sound really good to me.
I also still like the early Mercyful Fate and King Diamond albums. That album Dont Break The Oath is probably the finest metal album (in my opinion)
I still like my old Cathedral albums to, but i think that is the band that got me out of metal and off into psychedelic land.

You're also going to see Gamma Ray also right? When and where?

A friend of mine and I might try to go up to and see them in Minnesota (or maybe it was Wisconsin ...) this coming May.

Cheap tickets, but it would be an 8 hour drive there, and then back again. Anything for Gamma Ray however.
