I have to be the WORST hacker you'll ever see. I know pretty much none of the terms used and here's my predicament:

I've checked smwcentral. I've checked LM's help file. I've searched all across the board, and I've been unable to find a nice, quick answer. I need to know how to get a certain set of tiles to use a different palette. Not how to change which colors within the same it uses, how to get it to actually use another one that's already there. I've just changed "Nintendo Presents" into "Mike O'Shay Presents" in this hack I'm working on, I changed around the font, I've changed around the colors, and I want it to be light red and dark red.
I selected the colors. It shows perfectly and there are no problems, but the colors of the text are light brown and dark brown in the ROM. I've found which palette it's using in the ROM, but I'm at a COMPLETE loss as for how to change it.

This will likely be modded for "ur r t3h idiot b7" (note: I'm not calling the mods n00bs, you guys kick ass, in fact. ), but I've just pretty much given up. I don't know if I need to change it to a custom palette or what, but I've looked at the already placed choices and have selected colors that SHOULD work, if I can change the palette to the one I want. If I do this without asking at the board, it will likely either ruin my ROM (don't worry, I've got about a dozen backups) or will mess up the colors for everything else.

We all know begging sucks and I'm really lame for doing so, but I SERIOUSLY need help with this. Please... someone tell me how to change a small set of tiles so that they're on a different palette, without ruining them all...

Heh. I'm sure there are worse. Truth be told, there isn't really a quick answer for that one. Keep in mind that you have to change the STANDARD palette if you want to change the "presents" logo, not a custom palette. This may or may not affect some enemies or objects, but custom palettes everywhere else should fix all worries. To answer the question itself, you'll have to resort to the use of ASM, which isn't very nice when it comes to beginners. Until then, put it off until you can do so, or find a way around it.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I'll probably end up just leaving the colors as they are. It actually still looks pretty good, though I'd eventually want to get the colors changed.

I guess I'll just have to wait until I'm more experienced.

Here's the solution to your problem. Open the rom in a hex editor and go to address 15B0. The value there should be 30. Change it to 38.
When you play the rom again, "Mike O'Shay Presents" should be red instead of brown.

Don't know what a hex editor is? Search for one! I use XVI32, if that helps...

Thanks a lot! I'll also take your suggestion for a Hex Editor. I had one before, but it was a trial thing which has run out.

I'll see if it works!

[Edit 2:] It didn't quite look as good as I'd hoped, so I did some fooling around with the Hex Editor and found one that I think looked good. Thanks for all the help!

Well, now that that's all fixed up and I've also cleared up my confusion about the backgrounds (I just didn't read the helpfile close enough for that one, but I eventually got it ), I've just got one more major question, in the hopes that this topic hasn't been completely forgotten about: I've also checked around the helpfile, searched the board, searched online, asked friends who might know, and I even looked through another two hacks to try and find it, but I need to know:

How can you set it so that going through the bottom of a level can lead you to another level? I want to be able to make it so that this level I have (which is essentially two ledges and a small pool of water) will move you to another level (an underwater one) when you swim down, into the bottom of the water. I've seen it in other hacks (but, unfortunately, those all seem to be locked... ) and think it would make my hack better if I'd be able to do that.

You have to use a BlockTool block called "Teleport Block" for that. Check SMW Central for said program. Do that, insert the block (you have to do a hex to decimal conversion when setting the block number to put it at for some god-awful reason), and you'll be set.

Thanks again. I'll try and take it from there.

[EDIT:] It worked perfectly! Now I know how other hackers did it. I'm sure I'll get shot in the face if I ask ANOTHER question, but I'm afraid I have to. I added the block and selected the colors, which was fine, as I was trying to get it to blend in with the water. But now I want do add another special block and I need to know if it's possible to add your own 8x8 tiles. I know it's possible to edit them, I just don't know how to add my own. I checked around, didn't find a proper answer for it, am still really clueless.

By the way. asdf, you're a GOD. (Yeah. You're that helpful.)

Well, maybe I won't quite get SHOT in the face, but still it's pretty bad that I need to ask so many questions.

To add 8x8 tiles, would I need to do ASM-editing, or is there some sort of program you can use to add them? If you need to edit ASM, I guess I'll just select some tiles and select different palettes, or something.

I'm pretty sure Lunar Magic comes with a built in 8x8 editor...though it's not that great. When I edit the 8x8s, I just simply use a tile editor and load the GFX files from the Graphics folder. I think GFX 00-03 or so are your 8x8s, but I'm not 100% sure - haven't used it in a while.

Thats probably your only option for editing those - unless I overlooked something

About adding your own...you could either paste your tiles over top of unused 8x8 tiles, or you could make an ExGFX file to store them, which will take me a really long time to type. PM me if you need info on this

Or, use YY-CHR, which is significantly better at editing [8x8] tiles. You have to use ExGFX, however, but no problem. You can't directly add your own without resorting to sacrificing other graphics, but you should really only do that for stuff you're going to be using on a level-wide basis (IE: like how I did with the SMB3 level ending tiles, so that every level has a SMB3-Style Ending). After you get your ExGFX in, you have to go to the 16x16 Editor to add in your new 8x8 tiles.

Whether you meant overworld tiles, sprite tiles, or what not, the answer is basically "You can't". Sure, you could if you were one hell of a hacker. But I'm not aware of anybody who did something like that.

You might be surprised how easy it is to get by with just repointing existing graphics, though. When you add ExGFX to the mix, there are just so many possibilities that nobody should really need to have more available at one time.

If that's not what you meant, sorry, you're going to have to make your request clearer next time.

There are some new hackers who believe they're more important than everyone else on the board and anybody who doesn't immediately submit to their wild requests is an idiot. And yes, that is bad.

But it's probably not a good idea to do a complete 180 from there. I can do a range of pretty neat things like changing palettes in the middle of the game or coding my own blocks or even adding HP or a totally new meter to the game. And, quite frankly, I'm a bit of an idiot.

Our time isn't really that important. If a sweep of the help file and a google or two can't turn up what you're looking for, go ahead and make a topic. It'll probably take us a few minutes to find what you've been looking for for who-knows-how-long. (It's only annoying to us when it's not a real problem.)

Ha. How's that for a counter-point?

Wow, I guess I've just been overthinking the rules, taking them a tad too seriously. I'll be less afraid to post here, now. Thanks.

I have YY-CHR, too. I guess I'll just need to learn more about ExGFX.
