If you're a senior in high school and happen to be of the artistic variety, then you are most likely working on the same thing as I am at the moment ... a scholastics art or writing portfolio. In my case, I have two portfolios I'm working on: one for photography and one for art.

Although I do have a fairly extensive portfolio of work, when making a scholastics portfolio, it is wise, if you want to have a good chance of winning something, that all your pieces have a common theme ... if you want an example of what I'm talking about, then check out some of the past winners.

So in my case, a lot of my good pieces were sent out of the mix due to their non-comformity with the better and more central pieces of my portfolio. My photography ended up with three pictures (even though I had an overabundance of pictures for an eight-piece portfolio). After a few weeks of work, I have four matted pieces along with a ton of retakes that my photo teacher and I will be going over soon. I should be set with that pretty soon, so I'm not too worried. Oh ... and the general topic I chose is student life. Or at least my perception of it.

My art portfolio is a different story though ... actually, it's pretty similar, but buckle down and listen anyway. After the review, I ended up with four solid pieces out of eight (some still need a few tweaking like a new matt or some adjustments to make them eligible, but we'll sidestep that for now). However, it takes me a good long while for me to actually finish any kind of good art piece. The piece I'm about to show you just made it five. So I have to make three pieces in less than two weeks. ... murder. The general theme I have going is experimental mixes between photography and drawing, which leads into a mix between fantasy and reality ... and in this next piece's case, somewhere in between as well.

If you remember one of the last pieces I showed off, The Project, that will be in my portfolio as well.

Out of the three remaining pieces I have left to finish, two will have a photographic foreground and drawn background ... different from what I've been doing lately. The last one ... I'm really not too sure what I'm gonna do with it.

The Scholastics Art and Writing Awards is a national (American) competition (possibly even international), so chances are that you've heard of it ... or may even be participating in it this year or have in years past ... or will ... who knows?

Sooooooooooo ... this thread has a duel purpose. 1) Commentary and critique on my art piece that I just put up and 2) discussion of the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards.

...

DISCUSS!!!

Note: The process that chooses the winners of the art competition is as follows. It starts off with a regional competition, and from there, the porfolios that received a Gold Key (the highest award) are sent on to the next round for National judging in New York. From there, you're either give a Gold Key or Silver Key. Whoever gets one of the seven Gold Keys (at least two in art and two in photography, the other three go into whichever section has the better portfolios ... most often the art portfolios) gets $10,000 in scholarship money and whoever gets a Silver Key gets a $1,000 scholarship.

I defintely like that picture.. It like.. blows my mind at the sametime as marveling it.I like that little Teddylot cameo in one of the layers there

Hm... Looking at it at times just makes me think the artstyle isn't consistent... It could be just my eyes, though.

Scholastic.. now that's something I haven't heard since... Well.. Since I lived up north. Makes sense if you think about it, since Florida's kinda.. crappy in the edumacation department ;

Hum... If my old highschool wasn't so cruddy, I'm sure they would've mention it to me.. and I.. by some off chance, might've been interested in it...

Ah well..

Actually ... he makes two cameos. One in the sketch layer ... the second in the last visible spoon reflection.

EDIT:

And the art inconsistency is deliberate.

Oh, well, the one on the sketchpad corner was too obvious for me to mention. The one on the spoon was the one I was refering to

SUPER AWESOME BUMP.

Well, I'll be announcing how I did in the awards show whenever I find out ... which will be in a few days, but for now, I may entertain you all with my latest piece.

Of course, you may have already seen the sketch in "the super sketch thread."

But whatever, here it is.

The character itself is finished, but I have to figure how to finish the entire piece.

Right now, however, it's just a nifty character design.

Well, it had to be finished by tomorrow .... sooooooo, here it is.

Anyway, I couldn't think of what to put in the background, so I looked around for an old picture I could use. In truth, I'm actually waiting for the snow to melt away and the leaves to come back so I can go to the local skate park to take pictures.

More to come, I'm afraid.

EDIT: And my, my ... here it is.

Enjoy ... and of course, constructive criticism is wanted.

Holy crap man, those look awesome! That's true artistness (word?) right there. I love how they stick out from their environments so much. It just looks fantastic.

Typically I would find something to complain about, but I really can't this time. You've done an excellent job

They are brilliant, I wish I had done art in my senior year, not so much theory and more practical with a lot of shows etc.

I like how you've put a real background behind a 2D image. It has a really good effect

Bumped for greater justice. =o

Actually, I just want to show off a new project I'm working on. The entire thing is based on The Fountainhead, so if you've read that book you might know what to expect from the finished project.

Here's the original lineart:

And then the colored version:

But if you think this is the finished project ... don't be fooled. =o

It's actually only 1/3 to 1/4 finished. I still have much to do complete the piece which includes a foreground and background.

You know the basics. =P

But whatever, I'm excited for the piece and can't wait to finished it. Of course, if the piece is to become as awesome as I want it to be, then I'll be needing a ton of constructive criticism.

Indeed. It reminds me more and more of Vinnie Veritas' work each time I see it. You're really trying to get that style, eh?

You think so?

The only piece that I could relate to Vinnie's work is the one I showed you ...

Wait there's more ...

Just a tad more ...

Soooo, yeah ... it's the only one that I see Vinnie's influence in ... and it just so happens that I made this piece before ever hearing of him. =o

But yeah ... his influence will probably show up a bit more now that I have a flash project in the works.
