Rando and I saw this on Tuesday night. I had expected it to be good. It blew me away. I have to say that it is one of the best films I have ever seen.

I've never come across a movie with an overall effect as powerful as this. Brokeback Mountain is an incredibly realistic and nuanced portrayal of forbidden, repressed love and the devastating toll it takes on everyone involved. I already knew that gay people did (and still do) enter into sham heterosexual marriages and bear children in order to hide and deny the truth about themselves, and I already knew that this was hell for the entire family, but Brokeback Mountain was able to give me an inkling of what this is actually like. It made me forget that I was watching actors - the acting really was that good, as was the faux aging of the two lead characters - and it deftly demonstrated the many layers of emotion and pain in the characters' lives. At first, I thought the movie was reasonably interesting and well-done, but at some point in the middle, the characters began to sink in. A certain pivotal scene involving a postcard and a phone call felt like a kick to the gut. At the end, I was a bawling mess, and I thought about the movie well into the next day.

Of the specific aspects of the movie, the music, dialogue, and acting struck me as particularly well-done. Most of the background music is part of a scene - for instance, a song playing on a jukebox. There is not much to the soundtrack other than occasional western-ish guitar chords that fit the mood and setting perfectly. The characters' dialogue is incredibly realistic in design and delivery. The well-known "I wish I knew how to quit you" line is the most Hollywood-ish line I remember, and I could still see an actual person spontaneously saying that. Due to the skill of the actors, all of the speech sounds like genuine conversation - complete with the hidden meanings and insinuations that are essential to the strength of this movie - and the ample silence of this film is not empty by any means. The actors convey many a thought and feeling via subtle gestures and facial expressions...just like actual people deathly afraid of how they might come across or doing their damndest to bottle up pain.

I also want to point out that, contrary to the misconceptions of some, this is certainly not a OMG!YaoiFangirlTeeheeKawaiiiii! movie. Not at all. It is about having to deny the love of your life and the very fabric of your being. It is painful to watch, but it is a very worthwhile experience.

what does OMG!YaoiFangirlTeeheeKawaiiiii! mean???

but yeah I thought the movie was pretty good. I think it could have been a bit shorter though and focused more on their relationship and less on their relationships with their wives.

Jack and Ennis probably wished they could focus more on their relationship and less on their wives as well...

It's a reference to the sort of fanservice that appeals to women who like seeing cute gay guys together. For example: lots of warm and fuzzy romance (including steamy sex scenes) and bare chests. Basically, scenes that would turn the aforementioned women into a squeeing pile of mush. Imagine a typical romantic movie with two men instead of a man and a woman. That's what some people think Brokeback Mountain is, and they think that much of its popularity comes from fans of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal going all gaga to see two good-looking men be romantic and sexy together.

The acting was damn good. Seriously, it's better than it ever should have been, not that I was expecting it to be bad. I didn't like the ending though. It struck me as too abrupt. And it's better than The Hulk.

I never went to see it, primarily because I'm just not into those kind of movies. But a few of my friends saw it and they said it was really deep. It even made one of my friends less homophobic (and trust me when I say that he was really, really homophobic)

There are alot of scenic pans, but they aren't as bad as, say, Lawrence of Arabia.

The beginning of the movie - before a pivotal scene inside a tent - really does not have much in the way of events or dialogue. It consists of scenes of the long, dull days of herding sheep, and it shows Jack and Ennis' developing friendship (and romantic interest). At first, they're two strangers in the same place, and they don't have much to say, but they gradually talk to each other more and even begin to open up about themselves. Some people think that this part moves too slowly. I thought the pace was generally OK, but I can see where they're coming from.

I actually thought the bit in the mountains moved by at a nice pace, and then the rest of the movie sorta drags a bit.

Although, really, every scene is important, they don't waste film here.

Now... mature about 4 years, and go watch the movie and then you will realize it is a great movie...

I saw it with my girlfriend a couple weeks ago, we both thought the story was amazing... and I really thought every part of it was very entertaining...

I've been trying to find a place to see it, but in the Bible Belt it's so taboo that no theater will tough it. The only place I've found is in Atlanta and I can't justify $20 in gas and $10 or so for a ticket.

It sounds absolutely phenominal and the trailers look good too. Maybe I can catch it when it comes out on DVD.

Really? I live in Georgia, and it's playing in cherokee county. =0

I was very upset at the end, it was a little too abrupt. It does play on your emotions and you feel a genuine empathy for the two characters.
