Something happened a long time ago.

As I caught word of savage space pirates sweeping through one of the last settlements of my dying race in search of new riches to plunder, I knew that I'd have a large burden on my shoulders in keeping the duty of my bretheren and I remembered.

The Chozo still wander the stars, though no longer with their magnificient civilization at their beckoning. The continuing pursuit of knowledge, coupled with orchestrated attacks on what would otherwise be a totally defenseless race, slowly split the Chozo apart among the cosmos. There were great advances in their war technology, but it was mostly deployed on a small scale for test purposes only, and an even greater portion of what actually made it out of alpha was for low-level defense.

Recombobulation technologies that have allowed our brothers and sisters to successfully reassemble their physiques in entirely different forms (the concept of which continues to be the dream of other civilizations, and thus the use of which cannot be detected easily) to continue their personal quests. Chozo hunger for knowledge, and continue to partake in and help to expand the databases of the galactic superpowers, unnoticed.

I am one who seeks knowledge and peace with the universe.

A glowing sun continued to bake the endless sands underneath it. The sky glowed a hazy red, as it continued to do so 35 hours a day. The twin suns of this planet made sure that no one got a wink, and that the surface of the world remained a toasty 77 degrees celsius.

This is Ahrion, a planet said to be currently uninhabited, for obvious reasons. What's worth noting, though, is that it was a site of civilization within 600 years ago. There are complex catacombs of tunnels under the surface, made of a near-super-tensile strength stone that wind miles downward. This was the home of some mega-hominid race, large as myself but with much more muscle mass, and dog-like features in their skeletal arrangment. Some people have already made the trip here to rob the graves, of course.

The real kicker is that at one point, these tunnels were dug deep enough that they had discovered another sentient race directly beneath them, and that a war broke out, that the upper-crust race lost. Wall paintings in the surface levels represent these beings as nothing but a swarming shadow. It was a threatening, mysterious presence to be sure.

I'm coming here. I wish to unravel this mystery once and for all, so that it may be documented and *I* can find another mystery of the universe for myself... and maybe find some trinkets to sell at the next depot. I have luxuries and living expenses to fulfill like every other being.

A green bolt hurled down through the atmosphere, burning with a bright white light as it struck the atmosphere. Within moments it had breached the sky, and with a blast of dirt it slammed down into the thick sand. It was a tall, oval shell of metal, that quickly straightened itself and unfolded to create a small platform. A massively built, 8-foot tall avian covered from head to toe in beige, reflecting armor slowly knelt down to activate the other features of the vessel. A rod pierced out of the middle of the platform, rising high and cascading a green field of energy down over top. Within moments, it was a safe oasis in the middle of the inferno.

Stepping out, the creature slid out a tablet from a compartment on its arm, flicking it out in front of him and staring at the map on its screen.

Chaos: ...1.8 imperial miles from the dropzone. That's got to be some kind of record...

He pushed a button on the top of his jagged 'thumb', causing the same green field to wrap around him to ward off the immense heat. He waved around the tablet in the air before checking it again. By detecting the composition of the gas in the lower atmosphere and then scanning a wide radius around him for sources of decomposition of that gas, he could quickly gain a rough estimate on the density of native life.

Chaos: Still dead as ever.

And, just to be certain, he ran his tried-and-true test for decomposition of basic oxygen/hydrogen.

Chaos: ...at least two dozen... looks like I've got some company.

He set off into the shifting sands, hoping to arrive at his prescheduled entrance into the passages below with (hopefully) no detection on anyone else's part...

((Well, here's my attempt at jumping into the story ))

It didn't take long before Chaos had stepped into a potential obstacle in his quest.

"Unknown entity entering vicinity."

A golden, metallic heap emerged from firery sands. It seemed to have a figure that was slightly humanoid, but it was clearly an automated contraption. It was holding up one of its arms, which seemed to have the shape of a common arm canon.

"Please pardon my hostile greeting. Are you an opposer of the Jurian Empire, the planet of PopStar, or any of their allies?"

The robot was donned in a brown cloak, which was constantly being whipped around by the wind. Judging from all the tubes sticking out from its body, it didn't seem like the robot was very advanced.

Chaos thought for a moment, sulking.

Chaos: (There wasn't supposed to be any organized expedition here... and I remember the last one having a little better technology than this... I'm just going to have to play dumb for a while until I figure out who exactly is in the ruins... their sentry doesn't look too sturdy, but I could run into problems if I resort to violence too early.)

Chaos stood back up firmly, bowing.

Chaos: My apologies, just a short time ago my ship hit some turbulence and I was forced to land a short distance away... my pod has been damaged, though I did get a topographical scan off and I found an artificial cavern a few sectors away to take refuge in while I wait for a pickup crew. I'm not entirely sure what my affiliation is with you, but I would like to request to pass.

The robots visual sensors, which looked like two round circles, flickered several shades of green as it quickly computed data.

"Hostile affiliation undetermined."

The robot lowered its arm canon, and bowed.

"I apologize for my hostile greeting, sir. Our vessel has also endured complications. However, my companion, Mr. Nite has decided to scrutinize the area in search of useful items. He has a 'sense' for 'treasure', as he said."

Chaos: (Grade A gold digger alright.) Is there any chance we could meet? His damages could be different from mine, I could be of some assistance...

He tugged at his silver-ringed collar nervously. Even with the refrigeration shielding his hazard suit provided, the simmering air was still starting to get to him. On top of that, he still couldn't determine for sure if he was the only person out in the shifting dunes...

"Affirmative."

The robot bowed once again.

"However, Mr. Nite is currently out of range. I have not heard from him for--"

The visual sensors started to flicker again.

"Time unknown. My sensors are unable to calculate accurate measurements due to the planetary conditions."

It turned around and pointed in the direction Chaos was heading in.

"That was the direction Mr. Nite was traveling in."

The robot then turned to Chaos and bowed yet again.

"My serial number is R66-Y, but I go by the name of Promethus. If you will excuse my boldness, will you tell me your full name, and will you allow me to accompany you?"

Chaos strode around the machine, and had already begun trudging away.

Chaos: C'aos. Cuh-ay-ohs. Most people butcher it into terran dialect and just call me Chaos though.

The terrain straightened out slightly, and a mile-and-a-half jog came and went quickly. Chaos bent down, catching his breath, as a large stone mound out in the middle of the sands became visible. As they approached, a rectangular entrance on one face could be seen. It was held up on both sides by simple pillars, made from a sand-beige compound, as was the tunnel itself. Surprisingly, the outside of the ruins were virtually undamaged by the blowing sands that had been hammering it for an indefinate number of hundreds of years. The floor was caked with dust that continually blew inside.

Chaos: This is the place?

Chaos continued advancing, and eventually the debris on the floor disappeared, revealing a diamond-textured maroon floor. By now the walls were glowing with an unearthly light, keeping the corridors dimly lit.

Chaos: Where is this Mr. Nite set up now?

???: Not too far away, now. But whatchoo be wantin' with 'im?

A figure crouched on a nearby rock deftly lept in front of the robot and the creature accompanying it. His own envirosuit was rather close to his body, rather a mystery where the air came from, in fact, and he smiled a bit through the clear helmet exterior.

"Affirmative. It is highly unprobable that Mr. Nite has gone anywhere else but here."

The robot bowed to the figure standing near the rock.

"Greetings. I requested to accompany Mr. C'aos on account that Mr. Nite has not returned after a certain amount of time, of which I cannot seem to calculate. Effectively, one could say that I am worried."

Chaos: There's no recorded bottom to these tunnels. I imagine people have the common sense to not set up shop too far in, but I'm just asking to get proven wrong, aren't I...

Chaos's head slowly pivoted to the shrouded figure. The envirosuit was of far too simple construction to be considered of terran design.

Chaos: And who might you be?

Chaos: I think caution is warranted.

Chaos reached out with one of his huge hands, shaking Drex's weakly. The ground shook for a moment.

Chaos: I already know for a fact that we're not the only ones in the ruins, and judging by the visitor history here, I wouldn't want to go anywhere solo without a decent weapon. I'm going to the lower levels anyways, so we'll be spelunking for Nite here.

Another tremor broke out, considerably closer.

Some mechanical whirring went on beneath the robot's cloak. He had prepared his arm cannon.

"I have not had the chance to have a proper reading of the geological statistics of the planet before my sensors were weakened. Are these tremors a part of the innerworkings of the planet, or do you believe it may be a battle currently taking place?"

Chaos: This stone here is supposed to be nearly as sturdy as 25-gauge tita-

Another loud shockwave, much harsher than the others, nearly sent everyone flying off their feet. Behind the three, towards the exit, the ground quickly cracked and gave way, creating a 20-foot wide gap where Chaos had been seconds earlier.

Chaos: ...supposed.

Chaos glanced over the edge. The floor had collapsed, breaking through the dirt beneath it, and the ceiling of another tunnel directly beneath. He turned around, backing himself off the edge, and clawed into the dirt inbetween to slow his descent. He dropped down into the lower hall, nearly instantly choking on the cloud of ancient dust. Climbing down the debris he nearly tripped over a foot-height box. It was a mass driver - a sort of super air drill designed for pummeling a way downwards using a sonic blast, used mostly in strip-mining. Whoever used it was obviously trying to reach further down, but, the THIS SIDE UP in bold type on the side had obviously been ignored. Chaos picked it up, noting it to be fairly new.

Chaos: ...Mr. Nite?

He jogged to a concealed, hastily-built fort of stones nearby - ignoring a puddle of black sludge as he stomped through it.

Drex: Oi! Don't 'ead down there without lookin'!

Not exactly one to heed his own warnings, the young man lept down into the hole after the new arrival. Despite his quick descent, the end seemed rather soft, as the dust in his landing space appeared to move upwards into his path and cushion his fall. Drex jogged over to Chaos.

Drex: Yer goin' forard too hastylike! Watch it!

As if to confirm the warning, a large chunk of earth very nearly hit the two, between them and the small fort.

Chaos: Well, that was definately manmade, I thought I'd peek and see what exactly was happening...

Chaos strode over to the small stone heap, reaching down and tearing the heavy canvas tarp off the top of it to find... more dust.

Chaos: ...I'm getting a really bad feeling about this.

The black substance bubbled for a moment. Out of it rose a black, impish figure, its tiny hands extending and suddenly growing razor-sharp talons made from the same material. A steady trickle of ooze continued to seep out of the wall nearby...

The robot's cloak shifted around as it held up its arm cannon.

"Please pardon my hostile greeting. Are you--"

The robot's eyes quickly flickered as it attempted to scan the body of the creature that appeared before them. There was a slight hum coming from the rm canon.

"I have referenced five possibilities on what the creature lay before us. The probabilty of the creature being hostile is sixty percent. If the creature is a mixture of two possibilities, I will be unable to assist unless Mr. Nite is found."

Drex: Bloody robot. Yer worthless, ya know? If ya canna tell that's hostile, what d'ya think is?

The boy flexed his knuckles, and several rocks flew at...and unfortunately through...the figure.

Drex: Alright, so the basic stuff didn' do anythin'...howsabout this?

At that the boy pressed a button on his suit, out of which came a small orb of light. With a few small motions, Drex made the ball of light dart about at the creature, hitting it several times.

Chaos slowly turned, watching the beast advance toward him. The rocks pierced through the sludge but didn't slow it down much - they clattered against a nearby wall, falling to the ground hissing from the residue eating at them. The orb of light slammed into it repeatedly, causing it to stagger. The slimy skin was punched in at several places, and a large chunk of it was completely split off the body, hitting the ground with a dull splat. It quickly gelled up, not returning to its host. The creature picked up speed, bounding forward with its wounded 'legs' before lunging at Chaos.

Chaos in turn hunched down lower as he tackled in response, shoveling his attacker entirely over top of him. A blade grazed Chaos's suit, tearing into it with surprising force. As the creature hit the ground behind him, Chaos spun around, raising his fist and slamming it down on it. A blade of bright blue energy shot from his wrist, impaling its target. Chaos quickly drew his arm away as he leapt back. The sludge golem had been completely ripped in half, the division coagulating.

Chaos: ...I don't know what that was... but it made a mess of me... I'll need to find something to repair this gash with before I can even get outside now... but our little friend won't be bothering us anym...

Chaos glanced back at the two halves of the body, which continued crawling at him, slowly, with its 'limbs'.

Chaos: For the most part. I think we're going to have to speed up this search.

Drex: Oi, can't believe ya didn' see phys'cal stuff was worthless.

The ball of light remained in the air from the last attack, and Drex launched it towards the creature. It seemed to expand in size and shape, creating a weaker film which rested over the oozy thing to burn it a bit weaker but all over.

Drex: I 'ope that'll slow it down. Kirb was aroun' here afore, wonder where 'e's off to? Bot, didn' he say anythin' ta ya?
