Go here for a bit of demographic info on this if you're curious.
I'm really curious where people here fall on this, as the regionalization tends to have some interesting trends. |

Soda. I'm like the majority of the US. I even came up with a random way that soda makes sense.
Sammy: Larry, did you know carbonated liquid with additives and artificial flavorings and colorings is bad for your health? Larry: Really, Sammy? that's why my health has not been that good at all... |

Soda. It just sounds the coolest out of the three, and isn't used for anything else (Pop is onomatopoeic, Coke can be branded to Cocaine). Usually, I just call it by its brand name, unless its referring to them in general. Or, just break down and call them "carbonated beverages".

Actually, soda IS used for something else. Seltzer water is soda...and that's another thing people drink. So pop makes more sense.
Also, if you check the demographics, there IS no majority...but Pop has a plurality of the votes. |

Soft drink. And I know a lot of people who use that term here. :\ It just fits. I'll use soda sometimes but most people around here know what a soft drink is.

I use pop. Soft drink is too long and pedantic sounding, and soda just seems... odd.

Colin uses Soft Drink because it's his own personal mission to prove that you can say and type things twice as long and mean the same exact thing. I'll kill you later.
I vote Pop. |

I use soda in general and Coke if I am referring specifically to a Coca-Cola.

POP.
I grew up in Pittsburgh and that's what it's called there. I see no reason to refer to carbonated beverages as anything else (unless I'm ordering a specific type at a restaurant or whatever), mostly for the reasons NSNick stated. It's short and succinct and it just sounds right. |

Ummm... I usually call it by the brand name. Dr. Pepper is too good to be called soda.
But... I call 'em soda otherwise... |
