I was being sarcastic about what I said. I do like metal, but not to an extent where it's what I'm into. I sort of distribute my affection evenly between metal, rap, country, rock, carribean...

*an hour later*

... jazz, and whatever category Gunther would fall under.

Those are common characteristics given to heavy metal though, no matter how untrue they may appear to be. It's just the way people look at things. Like how people think the south is full of hillbilies, when that happens to be where NASA is. =P

But yeah, what I listen to when I do:

Led Zeppelin
AC/DC
Metallica
Iron Maiden
KISS
Alice in Chains
And maybe Queen, bu I'm not sure that falls under heavy metal.

And mattp, calm down. It's not like I'm trying to jump your mom or anything.

How do I love thee, Metal? Let me count the ways!

Or bands, whatever works. My taste in metal is as varied as my taste in general music (pretty much anything but rap)

1. Hammerfall
2. Iced Earth
3. Judas Priest
4. Iron Maiden
5. Cradle of Filth
6. Dark Tranquility
7. Dream Theater
8. Pantera
9. Blue Oyster Cult
10. Children of Bodom
11. Death
12. Dimmu Borgir
13. Gorgoroth
14. Lizzy Borden
15. Nightwish(some call that metal, some don't)

I quit listing because I'm tired of skimming my music folder. I grew up in elementary and middle school listening to rock and high school is a combination of techno, rock, punk/ska, and metal. Should I just sum it up and say that I love music?

... I love how in all of your metal lists almost all of you listed a few bands that weren't metal at all, like BOC or Zeppelin.

Metal Knuckes- I hate stupid people. So when someone says something stupid, I call them out on it.

Almost all of you are really ignorant about metal. Not to be rude but you are.

If you want to listen to some good metal bands ( most of which I don't think have been listed here ), I'll list them and their genre for you:

Angra - Power/Ballad Metal
Animosity - Thrash/Metalcore
Apocalyptica - Cello metal
Arch Enemy - Thrash
At the Gates - Melodic Thrash
Atheist - Old school thrash
Avenged Sevenfold - Just kidding they blow dicks
Behemoth - Black metal
Beneath the Massacre - Technical Metal
Between the Buried and Me - Technical Metalcore
Bleed the Sky - Metalcore
Cannibal Corpse - Goregrind/Death Metal
Children of Bodom - Power metal w/ Black metal vocals
Chimaira - Good numetal
Cryptopsy - Brutal Death metal
Dark Angel - Thrash metal
Dark Tranquility - Melodic Death metal
Death - Death metal ( duh? )
Deicide - Death metal
Dimmu Borgir - Black metal
Emperor - Black metal
Fear Factory - Good numetal
Galneyrus - Japanese powermetal
Gwar - Shock punk/metal
Hate Eternal - death metal
Implosive Disgorgence - Brutal, brutal, fast, fast, insane grind
In Flames - fucking AWESOME melodic metal
Into the Moat - Technical metal
Jag Panzer - Power metal
Kalmah - Death/Power metal
Kamelot - Melodic power metal
Kreator - BADASS thrash metal
Lamb of God - Thrash metal
Mnemic - Melodic death metal
Morbid Angel - Classic death metal
Necrophagist - Highly technical death metal ( these guys are some of the most talented musicians on earth )
Nile - Egyptian themed death metal
Old Man's Child - black metal
Opeth - acoustic/folk metal?
Peccatum - Proggressive black metal
Sex Machineguns - AMAZING Japanese speed/power metal band
Sleep Terror - Jazz metal
Soilwork - Melodic thrash/death metal
The Black Dahlia Murder - Thrash/metalcore
Thorazine - Thrash
Vader - Aggro Death metal

ALL of these bands are great if you like metal. Even if you don't, most of the power metal bands are very listenable and catchy and you should check them out.

mattp: What the hell is melodic thrash, and why would you consider At the Gates--one of the originators of melodic death metal--as such? Also, there's really nothing technical about BTBAM, and Opeth is mostly progressive death metal.

Well, well. What do I see before me? A Hammerfall fan? Well, then we´re two as I also like them.

Hmm, I´ve actually heard Behemoth and I didn´t like it.

Matt, I think I have you on AIM. We shall discuss metal the next time I've got enough time to sit down and really take a look at my metal collection and junk.

P.S.: I know most of the guys in Cryptopsy. I go drinking with them when they play shows and I'm in the area.

Sir Freak- BTBAM's Alaska is pretty technical. Thanks for the other criticisms though, I see what you mean about At the Gates. When I think of melodic death metal I think of In Flame's Clayman album, which is a lot more melodic than what I've heard from At the Gates.

Thats awesome that you know the Cryptopsy people. Their music is excellent

Alaska is a lot more technical than their first two albums, true. But I wouldn't call it tech metal nor would I even call it metalcore. BTBAM seems to have stopped being a metalcore band with the release of Alaska; I wouldn't know what to call it. It's kind of different. Sorta proggish. Paul is a skilled guitar player.

I still haven't heard Cryptopsy's new album. But then, I still haven't heard And Then You'll Beg either, and I've owned that for more than half a year. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. Their other albums are real good though.

No one mentioned Disturbed because I don't think they actually qualify as 'metal'

Not in the sense and meaning the rest of the people in this thread are thinking about.

Plus they suck. Last album sucked so bad. I am not going to even come up with something wity to mock it.

And yes, you might be the only person on earth that luved St. Anger.

I hated the snare drumming. And the album was less than stellar, for me anyway.

St Anger was awful

Disturbed is also extremely mediocre. It gives me hope because I know I can write better music than that and my success will be better than theirs. Not metal at all either, more like.. modern alt rock

Their last album was alright. Stricken was a pretty good song. Other than that it blew.

Disturbed is nu-metal (or mallcore if you wanna call it that), so it's fitting to mention them here. And I think they're all right.

I myself have been on a Metallica kick lately. Just a couple weeks ago I listened to Ride the Lightning for the first time in years. I'd forgotten my love for it. Been spinning Master of Puppets too, and recently I heard ...And Justice for All and their self-titled for the first time and enjoy them both. Now I need to hear all of Kill 'Em All (I've been familiar with three of its songs for a long time, all really good--"The Four Horsemen" is perhaps still my favorite Metallica song), and I wanna hear Load too. I hear it's more of a hard rock album, but I don't mind. I heard "King Nothing" many years ago and remember liking it, so maybe I'll like the rest of the album.

If you don't go listening to it while wanting something like Master of Puppets, you'll probably like it.

I'm surprised I haven't mentioned that I have tickets for Dream Theater and Gamma Ray *looks at avatar*

Lately I've been listening to metal more than even playing videogames.

I mainly enjoy Power Metal, but there's some occasional Speed, Progressive, and Thrash that I love too. Here's the bands that I like:

- Angra
- Blind Guardian (not as much as most however)
- Gamma Ray (favorite band of all time, almost own all of their albums. Kai Hansen is my god)
- Dream Theater (John Pretrucci is a god, after seeing the Live at Bodukon DVD)
- Iron Savior (probably my second favorite Power Metal band)
- Helloween
- Masterplan (decent)
- Edguy (don't like them as much as I used to, they're too experimental sometimes)
- Hammerfall
- Avantasia
- Dragonforce (Valley of the Damned was awesome, but their latest albums are a little boring)
- Rhapsody (Neoclassical + Symphony + Opera + Metal = awesome)
- Sonata Arctica
- Symphony X (Michael Romeo freaking owns)
- Stratovarius
- Queensryche
- Children of Bodom
- Ensiferum (Viking metal)
- Elvenking (Viking Metal wins)
- Judas Priest (Painkiller is too good)
- Metallica (don't care for their new stuff after the Load albums though)
- Megadeth
- ManOWar (so far I hate them, but I was told Hail to England was a bad album. The one I bought)

I might be going to Minnesota to see Gamma Ray this May myself with a few friends.

PS: nu metal is not metal. nu metal is shit.

Well since we're on Disturbed right now I thikn they are okay, I liked The Sickness and Believe, but only Stricken, Sons of Plunder, and Overburdened were they only songs off of 10,000 fists that I like. If Mike would get better/heavier on the drums, their new bass player get into the music better, and Dan playing more complex and well more solos period they might move up into metal, until then they are Nu-Metal.

Metal can be VERY VERY VERY cheesy if done wrong. Like drop tune your guitar to D... hit the first string like repeatedly and just scream words over it. Sorry, that's not music and it's not metal. Shutup, you fail.

However.. I enjoy DreamTheater (which is more or less Prog Rock), Metallica, MegaDeth, Dimmu Borgir, Pantera and the Blue Oyster Cult.

Blue Oyster Cult is not, was not, and never will be metal. It is classic rock, MAYBE hard classic rock.

I still dont think Disturbed are even metal, at all. They just don't have that metal sound.

Dream Theater is good. If you like them I recommend any power metal bands in my band list.

Oh, Enslaved, Disiplin, Taak, Skyforger (WHJICHICICHIH IS SICK LATVIAN METAL)...

Most good Black Metal I find has NS leanings, unfortunately. And I'm not willing to further the listening to of that filth.

Oh, Cut Throat, Abyssos, Anaal Nathrak, Abigail and Barbatos (JAP) are all pretty sick bands.
